'The Vampire Diaries' Season 3, Episode 7 Recap

['The Vampire Diaries' -- 'Ghost World']

I wasn't exactly thrilled by Mason's return to Mystic Falls in 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' -- especially because I knew he was back to seek revenge on Damon -- but OMG I love Lexi. Seriously, she's probably one of my favorite characters in 'TVD' history, even though she's only really been in a handful of episodes. And after seeing the way she smashed Stefan's head into the window of a car, how could you not love her?!

All of the girls in Mystic Falls have some serious problems. Their boyfriends are either dead, undead, in love with dead girls or are crazy rippers. So it's nice to have a strong, badass female character in the mix -- because the status of Katherine's life is still TBD at the moment.

But Lexi, Mason and Anna aren't the only ghosts to return from the other side. Grams is back too! Unfortunately, she brings some bad news. It turns out that when Bonnie saved Jeremy and brought him back to life, she opened a small portal to the other side, and then after sending Vicki back to the ghost world, that witches on the other side kicked that supernatural portal wide open. Now, ghosts who have some unfinished business can cross over into the real world, including the tomb vamps, who start to go after the founding families.

It looks like the only way to send the ghosts back to the other side is to destroy Elena's necklace. That means bye-bye Anna, Damon and my girl Lexi, but before Bonnie can send the ghosts back, Elena needs Lexi's help to help her get through to Stefan. After all, if anyone can knock some sense -- and humanity -- into Stefan, it's his best friend Lexi.

And she certainly put in a gallant effort. Lexi did everything she could to help Stefan find some of his humanity again. She tried starving him of blood, staking him (several times) and even reminded him how special the necklace he gave to Elena was to him. You know, the one Bonnie needs to destroy. But nothing she did could bring the old Stefan back. Although, I can't lie, I love ripper Stefan. He's about 100 times more interesting than the old Stefan, and it's pretty obvious that Paul Wesley is having fun with him too.

Meanwhile, Jeremy is having his own ghost issues as he starts to think that maybe being able to have this connection with Anna is a bad idea. But when she asks him to send her away, he can't, and then they share a steamy, long-awaited kiss. That's right, they finally kiss! At this point, Jeremy and Anna have the healthiest relationship on the show. Seriously, she loves him, he loves her, and the only thing that's standing in their way is the fact that she's dead. Okay, so that's kind of a big issue, and let's not forget the fact that Jeremy does have a very alive girlfriend -- and Bonnie definitely won't be happy when she finds out that Jeremy and Anna are back together (and she isn't!).

In fact, maybe Bonnie should have never saved Jeremy in the first place. After all, she did open some sort of spooky supernatural ghost gate, and without Elena's necklace, which is currently M.I.A., she won't be able to close it.

So where is Elena's necklace?! It turns out that Anna took the necklace to ensure that she and Jeremy could stay together. But all good things must come to an end. After all, this is Mystic Falls -- couples don't stay happily ever after for very long in this town.

Leave it up to Elena to knock some sense into Jeremy. Does he really want to be in love with a ghost forever? At some point, she's only going to be holding him back. Anna, realizing that this relationship will only end up hurting Jeremy, finally says goodbye to her high school love. And if you though Matty and Vicki's goodbye was heartbreaking last week, then you're definitely going to need some tissues for this one. Anna and Jeremy will always be once of my favorite couples on 'TVD,' and while I'm not entirely thrilled to see Anna go, I'm pretty happy that she found her mother and that they were both able to cross over back to the spirit together.

It's not exactly the happy ending I was looking for, but it works.

However, does anyone else think that Elena was being hypocritical when she criticized Jeremy for loving a ghost? Girl, you love a vampire -- a vampire that currently craves blood more than you -- so I don't think you should be judging anyone right now.

Eventually, though, Elena does come to terms with the fact that she can't keep holding onto her own ghost. She spends so much of her time obsessing over Stefan, it's nice to see her take her own advice and finally come to her senses. So if Stefan doesn't wake up from this Klaus-induced crazy coma soon and start fighting for the girl he loves, Elena's going to have to move on. She has a life after all. So Elena leaves Stefan with a few parting words: "I won't love a ghost for the rest of my life."

Hopefully, this means more Delena because this episode was seriously lacking some sexual tension for Delena fans.

In other news, Damon and Mason start to work together! That's right, these two former enemies found someone that they both hate more than each other -- Klaus. And here' the real shocker: Mason knows a way to kill Klaus, and it's somewhere in a dark, creepy cave, and it's a cave loaded with vampire booby traps. Poor Damon.

To be honest, I have expected Damon to say the phrase, "I ain't afraid of no ghost," after facing off with Mason. I mean, how epic would that have been?! However, before Damon and Mason can find what secrets lie within the cave, Bonnie and Grams complete the spell, destroying Elena's necklace and sending all of our favorite ghosts back to the other side, including Mason.

Or does she? It turns out that Elena's necklace is going to be a lot harder to destroy than that. But does this mean that the ghost portal isn't exactly sealed shut?

Just when you think Damon was never going to find what was in that creepy cave, Ric comes along to help his former best friend. I love the fact that the Damon/Ric bromance is back. Ric is one of the only people that Damon trusts, even though he doesn't really show it. They share quite a "moment" in that cave. Seriously, they even share a look, and it's quite adorable. After Ric and Damon fix their trust issues, they discover some old cave drawings. Turns out these drawings are names written in Viking script -- and they're the names of The Originals.

Looks like this is all leading up to next week's episode where we go back 1000 years in the past to visit The Originals. Hopefully, this means that we'll finally get to meet that pesky witch who seems to be causing so much trouble from beyond the grave.

Best lines of the night:

Damon always knows how to say hello in the best possible way: "Greetings blondie ... witchy."

He also knows how to apologize. Damon to Mason: "You're right. I didn't have to kill you. I do a lot of things I don't have to do."

This is why I love Lexi. She's not only badass, but she's also a hell of a teacher in "Ripper Detox 101, crash course."

She also has a way with words. Lexi, trying to get inside Stefan's head: "I'm doing what I do best, sweetness. I'm saving your life."

Lexi, to Elena: "He's still in there Elena, you just have to break through."

Probably the most relevant line of the night, from Mason: "There's not much to do on the other side except sit around and watch people screw things up." And people always seem to be screwing things up in Mystic Falls.

'The Vampire Diaries' airs Thursdays at 8PM ET on The CW.

I though Katherine took the necklace from Bonnie posing as Elena at the time then brough it with her when she and Damon went on that road trip in search for Michael the vampire hunter so I still don't know how Anna ended up with the necklace :/ I guess her stealing it was a off camera scenario

The reason that Anna took the necklace wasn't to stay with Jeremy, it was to give her more time to find her mother.

~ THIS WAS THE BEST EPISODE THUS FAR ! ! !
this is why I loved the old ABC-Tv daytime soap opera Dark Shadows (1966-71)
on that show, much loved characters killed off were brought back now and then as ghosts so here's hoping some of the Vampire Diary ghosts will return at some point since the original witch's talisman necklace restored itself and Bonnie still has that unveiling spell in her grimoire :) :) and I am still hoping Bonnie's witchy cousin - Lucy from season 2 episode 7 Masquerade returns to Mystic Falls .
