Quagmire Plots to Murder His Sister's Abuser on 'Family Guy' (VIDEO)

'Family Guy' - 'Screams of Silence: The Story of Brenda Q''Family Guy' (Sun., 9PM ET on FOX) got very serious and very dark in their subject matter this week. When Quagmire's sister stopped by to visit, the boys found themselves awkwardly in the middle of her abusive relationship with her boyfriend.

Domestic abuse is a difficult subject to tackle respectfully in comedy, and certainly not one you expect to see on a show like 'Family Guy.' But for all its general ridiculousness, the show did handle this very serious problem with the respect it deserves.

They also provided a fantasy narrative for many people who feel unsure what to do about this very real situation in their lives through Quagmire.

After a heartfelt speech at an intervention staged for his sister, at which they learned that she was pregnant and the two were now engaged, Quagmire got to face off against her attacker, and come out triumphant in the end. Granted, it took the added assistance of a car and a tree, and they elevated her abuser to the level of a would-be murderer, but in the end he got the job done.

Without being overtly about Halloween, this episode nevertheless fit that macabre tone, with Quagmire essentially murdering a man and presumably getting away with it. After all, Joe was in on it, so more than likely things could be covered up to make it look like he wasn't involved. Of course, self defense would go a long way to explaining what went down as well. Now his sister is left to raise the child as a single mother, which is yet another sobering aspect of this story.

So while it may not have had nearly the extent of laughs we're used to, the episode still managed to leave us satisfied ... if a little uncomfortable at the same time. Plus, it left us thinking. And that's saying something.
