'60 Minutes' commentator Andy Rooney has passed away. He was 92.According to CBS, Rooney died in a New York City hospital on Friday. In late October Rooney had minor surgery, but suffered from complications. He never recovered.
"It's a sad day at '60 Minutes' and for everybody here at CBS News," Jeff Fager, chairman of CBS News and the executive producer of '60 Minutes' said. "It's hard to imagine not having Andy around. He loved his life and he lived it on his own terms. We will miss him very much."
The veteran journalist stepped down from his '60 Minutes' post in early October after his 1097th 'A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney' commentary. At the time, CBS News said he wasn't retiring, just not doing the weekly segment.
Rooney began his run with '60 Minutes' in July 1978. The journalist's first assignment was about the automobile fatalities during that year's Independence Day weekend. Rooney became a regular contributor to the news series in the fall of 1978.
