'Boardwalk Empire' Gangster Index, Week 7: Give Nucky Thompson a Hand

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 7th 2011 5:20PM
The conspirators trying to make a move on Nucky Thompson had spent countless hours, and nearly half this season of 'Boardwalk Empire' meticulously plotting their political coup. But in 'Peg of Old,' they lost their patience to see it through, and hastily moved on to assassination.

But luck smiled down on Nuck, and the assassin's bullet went right through his hand, missing his vitals. Even so, this thing just got real. We'll have to wait to see if Nucky will exact revenge on his rivals, but for now let's catalogue the damage done in this installment.

To keep track of the deals, deception and death, AOL TV is continuing our weekly 'Boardwalk Empire' gangster index, a guide to who's up and who's down among HBO's organized criminals.

Check out the index to find out how your favorite liquor-slinging sociopath fared this week ...

Stock Down: Jimmy Darmody. He let himself get pressured into ordering a hit on Nucky that he knew was the wrong call, and for the first time seemed over his head trying to play the boss role. Also, his cryptic "It doesn't matter if you're right or wrong ... you just have to make a decision" message to Nucky right before the shooting makes it pretty damn clear that he was responsible for orchestrating the attack.

Stock Down: Owen Sleater. He's getting into the habit of mysteriously going missing when people are making attempts on his boss' life. This time, he was strangling the fingers off an IRA traitor in a bathroom, and then sleeping with Margaret, as Nucky faced his assassination attempt. Ideally, you'd like to hire a bodyguard who's there to protect you from murder plots and doesn't screw your girlfriend, but good help is hard to find.

Holding Steady: Nucky Thompson: Miraculously survived a point-blank assassination attempt by catching the bullet out of the air with his bare hand! Just kidding, the bullet went right through it, but at least he wasn't critically injured -- or killed, for that matter. On the other hand, his election fraud case is not going well, as Ward Boss Neary is talking to the new federal prosecutor, who's actually trying to see him convicted.

TBD: Nelson Van Alden. It's never easy to get a handle on Van Alden's intentions, and I'm still not sure what he's thinking. After Lucy told Nucky that Van Alden was the father of her child, Van Alden seemed open to striking a deal with Nucky to keep him informed of the investigation in exchange for child support. But when Lucy ran off with the money, Van Alden offered his extensive file on Thompson to the prosecutor. Is he taking Nucky's money while helping to put him in jail? That'd be a typically Van Alden-y way of profiting while, in his mind, still doing the virtuous thing. Then again, maybe after Lucy left, he no longer needs Nucky's money.

Stock Down: Eli Thompson. There's just something incredibly weaselly about how he callously, without thought or the willingness to get his own hands dirty, advocated for Nucky to be taken out. If Nucky does get retribution against his conspirators, I'm rooting for Eli to be the first to go.

Stock Up: Lucky Luciano. He's having sex with Jimmy's mom again! And while this ultimately serves a great source of intelligence for Jimmy, it's a huge mental one-up that Luciano has over his colleague and rival from New Jersey. Chalky White may have pioneered the term "motherfucker" on last season of 'Boardwalk,' but Luciano expertly demonstrates its meaning.
