'Vampire Diaries' Star Michael Trevino on Getting Close with Klaus & the Rift with Caroline

by Laura Prudom, posted Nov 10th 2011 12:00PM
Michael TrevinoMystic Falls has been painfully bereft of everyone's favorite werewolf-turned-hybrid for the past two weeks, but thankfully, all of that is set to change with tonight's action-packed midseason finale.

Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) has been one of the most dynamic characters on 'The Vampire Diaries' thus far, evolving from misunderstood jock to angst-ridden lycanthrope to his new position as Klaus' (Joseph Morgan) right-hand hybrid over the course of three seasons. Where he'll end up next is anyone's guess, but according to Trevino, it's sure to be a compelling ride.

We caught up with the actor to get the scoop on Tyler and Caroline, his new bromance with Klaus and what fans can expect when 'TVD' returns from its two-month hiatus in January.

Proceed with caution, spoilers ahead!

I think 'Vampire Diaries' fans have been going into Tyler withdrawal over the past couple of episodes...
[Laughs] Well, I hope they have.

But you're back this week ... what is Tyler up to in 'Homecoming'?
Well, it's the homecoming dance -- it's been canceled, so it's actually not only Tyler, but Tyler and Klaus, who decide to take it upon themselves to move the homecoming dance to the Lockwood mansion. So that's really at the center of where everything is happening and going down. It's a lot of people just running around throughout the Lockwood mansion, and then there is some organized chaos ...

The last time we saw Tyler, he was being led astray by Rebekah. Have things developed between them since then?
That's actually not really addressed in this next episode. It's more about Klaus and Tyler, and also where we left off and where it's going to continue as far as Tyler and Caroline's relationship goes.

I can't imagine that Caroline is thrilled that he's growing closer to Rebekah, whether she's actually caught him yet or not. Are we going to see the rift between them reopening?
We're going to see how Caroline and Matt -- together, actually -- feel about Tyler and how they deal with the fact that he's been sired by Klaus. Whether he likes it or not, he has this loyalty that he can't really resist towards Klaus. So it's about picking a side and wondering Do we trust Tyler, and is he someone that we can be friends with? Or is he just going to go completely Team Klaus and wreak havoc just as badly as that guy is?

He apologized to Caroline for his behavior in 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' but are we actually going to see any remorse, or is he just telling Caroline what she wants to hear at this point?
No -- within the episode there's a specific moment where you can see Tyler doing the right thing, or at least trying to do the right thing. Whether or not people get in his way, you'll find out tomorrow. He does try to do the right thing, but there are obstacles to that. We'll see what Tyler's real intentions are, and for whom his intentions are, this week.

As you mentioned, Klaus returns to town this week, and he and Tyler are at the center of the action. What can you tell us about their relationship right now?
What I can say is that they're forming this bond, whether it's for the good or ... I mean, they're forming this bond together, but it's Klaus, again, and there's always an ulterior motive with that guy. There's always something else going on or that he's planning -- he's always got an ace up his sleeve. So their relationship really does take a turn in [this] episode.

In 'Teen Spirit,' we saw Tyler having some fun with his new abilities, like making his football coach end practice early. Are there any similar abuses of power coming up?
Well, I believe that Tyler gets into a fight [tonight], so I'm sure he's going to be using his new supernatural weapons if he has to, as far as vamp speeding at will and any kind of different moves or just turning into a hybrid, period. That'll be seen.

This episode is the midseason finale. Can you give us a hint about how things are left at the end of the episode?
I would say there might be a little bit of closure between this struggle with the Original family, going back to not only Rebekah, but also Mikael and then Klaus and the leverage that Stefan's trying to hold. I think that's all resolved by the end of this episode, as well as the relationships between not only Tyler and Caroline, but Tyler, Caroline and Matt.

Going back to what I said as far as Can Tyler be trusted right now? Which side is he on? Is he going on the good side with everybody or, now that he's a hybrid, is he just chasing Klaus around and doing whatever he says whether it's good or bad? I think everybody, by the end of this episode, will know and be able to pick a side on whether they're still fans of Tyler or they're not because of the way he's acting.

What about after the hiatus -- can you offer any details about what fans can expect when the show returns next year?
Well, there's a few new characters that are going to be coming into Mystic Falls. We have a new love interest coming in for Alaric, so we're going to get into that. I believe we're getting into flashbacks again -- even though I know we just kind of had one, we're getting into flashbacks again!

We've seen Tyler return to his douchebag Season 1 default again. Are you enjoying playing that? He seems to be way less angst-y now that he's a hybrid.
I mean, I'm personally having fun with it because it's a whole new level and arc that I can play around with and have fun. But also, I think there was a lot of responsibility in becoming the first successful hybrid, so I think it's pretty cool to have a different supernatural ability and for me to personally just be able to act that out. It's fun, why not?

Have Julie Plec or Kevin Williamson given you any indication where the hybrid storyline may be going, or are they still keeping you in the dark?
You know, they're keeping me in the dark. But I'm going to give them until our holiday hiatus when I can go back to Los Angeles, and then I'm going to give a knock at their door and ask them just what the heck's going to happen! [Laughs]

'The Vampire Diaries' airs Thursdays at 8PM ET on The CW. It returns from midseason hiatus on Thurs., Jan. 5.
