'The Vampire Diaries' Season 3, Episode 9 Recap (VIDEO)

the vampire diaries season 3 episode 9['The Vampire Diaries' -- 'Homecoming']

Oh my god. Excuse me, but those are the only three words that can come out of my mouth right now. After last week's twisty-turning episode, I didn't think 'The Vampire Diaries' could really get any better ... but it did. And it was awesome. So awesome that I still have a "witchy headache" trying to figure everything out.

But Delena fans rejoice! We got an almost kiss tonight! It looks like Elena is finally ready to let go of her ghost. Sorry Stefan, but there's always Katherine. After all, she did finally admit that she loves you -- and Damon. Now do you see how epic this episode is?

After some baiting from Stefan and Rebekah, Klaus returns to Mystic Falls ready to celebrate his father Mikael's death. There's only one catch: He's not dead. But Klaus already knew that. You see, what made 'Homecoming' such a great episode was the intense mental chess match between Klaus and Mikael. One was always one step ahead of the other.

In an attempt to finally free themselves from Klaus -- and save Stefan's humanity -- Damon hatches a plan to kill Klaus. First, Stefan and Rebekah lure Klaus back into town, then he makes sure Mikael has the white oak dagger, the only way to kill an Original, and that Stefan is out of the way. As weird as it sounds, Damon is officially the most trustworthy vamp in the bunch.

Meanwhile, Elena decides to pay Rebekah a visit. It turns out that 1000-year-old Rebekah has never been to a high school dance. Obviously, she's just never had the time. Honestly, I feel for Rebekah. She can't trust her brother, she can't trust her father, and the only thing she has to look forward to is a school dance. She's more than just Barbie Klaus or an evil blood slut. Rebekah longs for a family, which is why I like the relationship she has with Elena. That is, until Elena took matters into her own hands.

Elena unexpectedly gives Rebekah her mother's necklace to wear to the school dance, and just when you think these two are sharing a tender, warm and fuzzy moment, Elena stabs her in the back ... literally! Poor Rebekah took a dagger to the heart.

the vampire diaries I know Elena did it because she couldn't trust Rebekah, but it was pretty great to see Elena finally use her head for once. She always lets her emotions guide her decisions, so to finally see her take control and be useful was one of the biggest unexpected twists of the night.

So it's bye-bye Rebekah and hello Klaus. So Klaus is back in Mystic Falls, but if you think he came alone, then think again. He brought an army of his hybrids with him. Check. But, of course, Damon knew that would happen, and he also knew that Mikael could compel the hybrids. He is an Original, after all. So now it looks that Klaus' plan has failed him. Mikael has compelled his hybrids and he's also about to kill Elena.

But does Klaus actually care if Mikael kills Elena? Nope. Well, maybe a little. He needs her blood to create his hybrid friends. Did anyone else want to give Klaus a hug when that single tear started to fall down his face? The poor guy has some serious daddy issues. But how can you not when your dad constantly calls you a coward?

In a shocking move, Mikael stabs Elena, but wait! It's not Elena -- it's Katherine! Okay, so it probably wasn't that shocking, since Katherine has been rocking the wavy hair this season. It looks like Katherine was working with Mikael and Damon all along. With Klaus distracted, Damon rushes in and daggers Klaus ... but he doesn't get him in the heart. Then, out of nowhere, Stefan races in and knocks Damon off Klaus. Seeing his chance to finally get revenge on Mikael, Klaus grabs the ancient dagger and stakes Mikael. He goes up in flames, and just like that, an Original -- and their only weapon for destroying Klaus -- is gone. Check.

Meanwhile, it looks like Caroline and Tyler are officially over. She just couldn't deal with his loyalties to Klaus anymore. Oh yeah, and she was probably still mad at him for the unnecessary vervain treatment.

In exchange for his loyalty, Stefan now has his freedom, but his humanity is another story. But wait! Just when you think Stefan saved Klaus out of loyalty for the hybrid, he actually did it out of loyalty for his brother because if Klaus would have died, he would have taken Damon with him. Stefan still loves Damon! And it's that brotherly love that's hopefully going to bring his humanity back.

At least he's working for the right team now. Just when you think Klaus is going to awaken his family -- the Originals (Elijah!!) -- it looks like Stefan was one step ahead of him. Stefan, standing in a room of coffins, asks Klaus: "As someone who's been one step ahead for a thousand years, are you prepared for this?" Check mate.

Best lines of the night:

Bonnie, trying to get out of her Jeremy depression: "So let's stay home, order takeout and over analyze hyroglific thingys with Alaric."

Caroline's burn of the night: "Quit hanging out with Rebecca, the evil blood slut."

Damon, describing Klaus: "Her lying, mama killing, dagger happy brother."

Stefan being funny: "I'm 162 years old. I need better ties."

Damon, to Elena: "I'm not judging you. It's very Katherine of you."

DELENA MOMENT: "We'll survive this. We always survive. Trust me."

Katherine, to Stefan: "Let's just say I like the old you better." Katherine must be the only one.

Damon, to Stefan and Elena: "If I look back at our history of epic plan failures, it's usually because one of us let our humanity get in the way."

I loved tonight's episode. Too bad Mikael's gone. I would love to see some more of him. I loved how he got under Rebekah's and Claus' skin. Definitely had lots of twists and turns in tonight's episode. I'm looking forward to the new year. It looks like it's going to be great! :-)

I know! I wanted more Mikael-Klaus-Rebekah tension. But if I had to choose, better Mikael than Klaus! And I so cannot wait for the return of Elijah.

I was so sad that Mikael died. I love Sebastian Roche. He was great on Supernatural and he deserved some more time on Vampire Diaries.

Katherine has admitted to loving both brothers before but I wonder if she really does love Stefan more when in reality, Damon was the only one willing to be a vampire with her without compulsion.
Anyhow, I think Katherine is protecting Damon and Stefan for Elena and Damon. I think in a way, Stefan can never be happy ... if he went back to normal life, he wouldn't be himself but if he becomes the Stefan Ripper, he can at least ensure Elena and Damon's safety in some matter and that is better than being on the bunny diet.

Although, almost every guy in Mystic Falls seems to have gone to the dark side. Tyler, Matt, Jeremy,...isn't that weird?
