As 'The Colbert Report' (Weeknights, 11:30PM ET on Comedy Central) was coming to a close, Stephen Colbert stood by his wall of memorabilia and talked about the breakup of R.E.M. The band had been on his show before, and he was a huge fan of their music. But rather than put their latest compilation CD on the shelf, he decided to take it a step further and put Michael Stipe on the shelf, who gamely allowed himself to be perched on a shelf and spruced up for display.
Earlier in the show, Brian Eno had told Colbert that singing keeps you younger and the two had agreed to get together next time and sing 'Lean on Me.' Well, next time was now as Eno came out and the three performed a beautifully harmonized a cappella rendition of the classic song to close out the show.
