'West Side Story Cast' Reunites on 'The Talk' (VIDEO)

by Stephanie Opella, posted Nov 16th 2011 7:30PM
Rita Moreno, George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn, who played Anita, Bernardo and Riff fifty years ago in 'West Side Story,' stopped by 'The Talk' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS) to reminisce about making the classic American musical. Perez Hilton was guest-hosting, and began by announcing, "I am such a show queen; I love 'West Side Story'!" He then launched into his best Anita impression and sang a bit from 'America'. He reminded Moreno of the Oscar she won for her performance and she countered by reminding him that she also won a Golden Globe.

The actors shared that they didn't know how the movie would be received while they were making it. George Chakiris recalled, "There were two guys in suits. One of them said 'We think we might have an artistic success, but we're not at all sure about a commercial success."

The movie would go on to win ten Oscars, including Best Picture. And fifty years later, its popularity and relevance are just as strong. Last week's 'Glee', entitled 'The First Time' featured a McKinley High rendition the musical and the episode was one of the show's most controversial to date.

Probably one of the greatest musicals ever made. Not only the cast was great but the choreography by Jerome Robbins was was phenomenol. Robbins received an Oscar for choreography and as co-director with Robert Wise. Just think, this movie's intake was $43+million and they had a $6 mil budget. Movies now have a hard time hitting that kind of box office sales, unless it is a movie length cartoon.

One of the best musicals EVER!!! The first time I saw this movie was in my junior high drama class and I was instantly hooked! Russ Tamblyn was also in another musical before "West Side Story" called "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers"...he plays the youngest of the seven brothers. So VERY talented!!!

Gee, what a nice bunch of people. What happened to entertainment and entertainers? Here are three talented, gracious, admirable people. People you'd love to know. And what do we have now? Justin Beaver, Britney Spears. I hate to admit it, but the present crop of entertainers make me long for the golden age of Madonna.
