'Tudors' Star Jonathan Rhys Meyers Found Guilty of Threatening to Kill Cops

Jonathan Rhys MyersTroubled 'Tudors' star Jonathan Rhys Meyers was found guilty yesterday of threatening to kill three French policemen. The AFP reports that a court in the suburban French town of Bobigny handed Rhys Meyers a one-month suspended sentence and ordered him to pay a 1,000-euro ($1,351) fine for a drunken altercation with police at a Paris airport.

The 34 year-old actor launched the attack in a bar at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris back in 2009. The court heard how he first struck and cursed at a barman who had refused to pour him a drink. Rhys Meyers, who was described in court as being "extremely aggressive" at the time, then abused the gendarmes who arrived to arrest him, screaming "I'm going to give a million dollars to ruin your life. I'll kill you and your family."

After sobering up in police custody after the attack, Rhys Meyers reportedly apologised to the officers and said he was suffering from alcoholism. He admitted in court to being drunk at the time, but said he had "no recollection" of the attack and that he deeply regretted what he had done. Rhys Meyers was not in court for sentencing, but prosecutors said he has already compensated his victims in the case.

Rhys Meyers' defence attorney, Vincent Tolenano, asked for the charges to be dismissed pleading that his client has a "frail personality," adding that he's "a fragile person who suffers from personal demons." Afterward Tolenano said he thought the sentence handed down was "harsh" and that Rhys Meyers' case had been "harmed by his fame."

It's not the first time the actor -- who has acknowledged his battles with alcoholism -- has got into trouble while traveling. An Irish court dropped similar charges against him in 2007 after he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly at Dublin airport. Last year United Airlines banned him for life after "belligerent" and "disruptive" behavior during an early-morning heavy drinking session at JFK airport in New York.

Earlier this year Rhys Meyers checked into rehab for the fifth time to try to overcome his substance abuse issues, which are said to have worsened since his mother died in 2007. However, a few weeks later he was hospitalized after downing large numbers of pills in an apparent suicide bid. A source told 'The Sun': "This is very sad. It was the opinion of those present that he tried to take his life."
