NBC Orders 'The Munsters' Remake Pilot

by Chris Harnick, posted Nov 17th 2011 1:00PM
The MunstersRemakes are still all the rage in TV, despite the fact for every 'Hawaii Five-0' success there's a 'Charlie's Angels' failure. NBC has ordered a pilot for a new version of the 1960s classic 'The Munsters.'

Written by 'Pushing Daisies' scribe Bryan Fuller, the new version of 'The Munsters' will be an hour-long and more serious than the campy sitcom it's based on. According to EW, the series will explore how the Munsters came to be.

Fuller first began working on a 'Munsters' reboot in 2010. This isn't the first modern take on 'The Munsters.'

Following the two original seasons of the CBS series, the show had several movies and a spin-off series that lasted from 1988-1991. In 'The Munsters Today,' the Munster family awaken from a sleep induced by one of Grandpa's inventions after more than 20 years. The show served as a sequel to the original series.

This is a horrible idea. Of course, I thought "Pushing Daisies" was a horrible idea too.
There are so many better ideas for shows out there (Firefly, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Farscape, Caprica) that fell by the wayside, why re-do something that wasn't even a great idea in its own time. What's next, a remake of "My Mother the Car," or a show about "identical cousins"?

I'm sure the dialogue went something like this:

NBC suit #1 "Well, we screwed the pooch on that 'Wonder Woman' reboot. That's it. No more remakes for a while. Just fresh new ideas people!"

NBC suit #2 "Oh, really? Okay. So I'll just toss out this proposal to reboot 'the Munsters' where we discover their origins and make it less campy and more serious."

NBC suit #1 "Whoa whoa whoa...now let's not be hasty here..."

NO. How are you going to get rid of Prime Suspect and then remake something that should remain dead as a show. Did your whole debacle with Wonder Woman show you people anything? Wow, just wow. NBC is seriously circling the drain.
