ABC Announces 2012 Midseason Schedule; 'Cougar Town' MIA

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 18th 2011 6:15PM
ABC has announced its 2012 midseason schedule, and one wine-soaked comedy is curiously missing from the list. 'Cougar Town,' despite a planned cameo offensive, is nowhere to be found. However, an ABC source has told TV Line that it will be back "sometime in the spring."

Also missing: 'Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23,' the new comedy that was set to be paired with 'Cougar Town.' The only new comedy to get a premiere date is 'Work It,' the network's cross-dressing sitcom that's already been critically panned.

The good news is that most of ABC's new dramas now have premiere dates. 'GCB' (formerly 'Good Christian Belles') will debut on Sun., March 4, 10PM ET, after 'Desperate Housewives.' Drama-thriller 'The River' will premiere on Tues., Feb. 7 at 9PM ET. And Ashley Judd's new drama 'Missing' will premiere Thurs., March 15, 8PM ET. The fate and premiere date of Shonda Rhimes' new drama 'Scandal,' starring Kerry Washington, is still up in the air..

And before this season is even over, the premiere date for the new season of 'Dancing With the Stars' has been announced: Monday, March 18 at 8PM ET, with results shows starting the following week on Tues., March 27, 9PM ET. Now we understand why Tom Bergeron wants to pare back to one season per year ...

Update: Deadline is reporting that 'Cougar Town' will return in March, with its episode order reduced from 22 to 15. It's slated to air Tuesday nights at 8:30, with a lead-in from 'Last Man Standing.'

Check out the rest of the schedule here:

8-10PM 'Dancing With the Stars' (premieres March 19)

Of all the new shows announced on the ABC lineup the one I am most eager to see is-NONE OF THEM. Really? A show about cross dressers? Isn't that kind of stuff reserved for Bravo?

There's no strategy to Cougar Town's delay & episode reduction other than to further ABC's rep as the go-to netword for reality programming. Disney, which owns ABC, is norotiously cheap and my guess is if we can be weaned off Courtney & company, they'll reap some savings. Bill Lawrence, Courney, I'm ashamed of the Disney execs making this decision. Sure, your show hasn't won a boatload of Emmy nominations, but it is consistently entertaining, so thanks! I wonder if I buy every product advertised during Cougar Town, can it influence Disney/ABC to have second thought?
