It's Regis Philbin's Last Day on 'Live!' -- Now He Wants to Host 'SNL'

Today is Regis Philbin's last day co-hosting 'Live! With Regis and Kelly,' but it seems as though thoughts of retirement are still far from the 80 year-old's mind. Talking to reporters after Thursday's show he said "I feel pretty good," but he did admit that he may not feel quite so good next week when the show carries on without him.

"I wasn't looking forward to this moment," said Philbin. "You never are in your life when you're leaving a success that you worked your tail off to make." However, the hardest working man in television won't be idle for long. He's embarking next week on a US book tour to promote his new memoir, 'How I Got This Way,' and he's already been toying with the idea of making his own reality show.

However, he told 'The New York Times' that what he'd really, really like to do is host 'Saturday Night Live.' Saying it would be "irresistible" if he got the call, Philbin quipped "It's come up in my mind, but not theirs. I think the audience for that show would rather have some young guy playing a vampire somewhere."

Many fans agree with Philbin that he'd make a great 'SNL' host, and there have long been numerous Facebook groups and online campaigns to have him do it. Maybe he could have a cameo tomorrow night, Lorne Michaels? We're just saying it might be a nice (non) retirement gift ...

However, one place you won't see Philbin showing upo is on 'Dancing With the Stars.' He told 'The NY Times' that he's been invited to compete on the show several times, but so far he's declined to don the spandex and sequins.

No fulltime replacement for Philbin has yet been appointed. Names linked with the job so far have included Ryan Seacrest, Andy Cohen and Kelly Ripa's husband Mark Consuelos, and until a successor is named Ripa will front the show with a succession of guest hosts. Jerry Seinfeld steps up to the plate as first guest host Monday morning, in what he jokingly referred to as "Operation: Smooth Transition."

However, Ripa acknowledges that it won't be the same. She told the AP yesterday "Will we be able to recreate the Regis magic? No, of course not. Only Regis has that." Meanwhile, Philbin said he's glad he'll be in Miami Monday: "I'll probably watch the show from my hotel room," he said, "and I'll feel, 'Omigod, it's so far away.' Maybe it'll be better that I'm watching it from down there."

YES YES YES Regis would be great! He hasn't been no television all this time for nothing! I would say that Jay Mohr should replace Regis. He and Kelly have always had this great chemistry and sexual tension when he would co host. Plus the guy is funny!
