Will Maksim Chmerkovskiy Perform on the 'Dancing With the Stars' Finale?
This season of 'Dancing With the Stars' has had more than the usual amount of controversy, and a lot of it has come courtesy of clearly exasperated pro dancer -- and resident bad boy -- Maksim Chmerkovskiy. He's seemed dangerously close to boiling point all season and last week capped off an on-air altercation with judge Carrie Ann Inaba by dropping the f-bomb when talking about her to reporters.Although Maks and partner Hope Solo's bad-tempered and uneven run on the show has come to an end, they're still due to perform on Tuesday night's live finale when each of this season's 12 couples returns to the dance floor for a special performance. But will they show up? After their elimination Maks and Hope were conspicuously absent from the post-show press lineup, and he rattled fans by writing in his blog: "What's next for me? I have no immediate plans at the moment. I'm not even sure if we're going to be at the finale!"
Addressing rumors that he won't be back next season, Maks -- who is under contract with the show until 2014, much to his obvious chagrin -- wrote: "I'll try to do what's right for my personal future. I'm sorry if that sounds selfish. But I will absolutely take into consideration my fans and what they want. I can say that at this point, I don't plan on taking any seasons off. If I'm not back next season, it wasn't up to me. And if I do change my mind and want to take a break, I'll announce it."
In an interview with 'The New York Post,' Maks didn't confirm whether he'll perform at the finale, but did say he wants to make his parents proud. He also said that while he regrets his argument with Len Goodman -- during which he told the veteran head judge, "maybe it's time to go" -- he doesn't regret standing up for himself. "I don't want to just stand back and accept punches. That is not what we are supposed to be doing."
Maks' bad temper has reportedly led to feuds between him and some of the other pro dancers. After the Ukrainian's bust up with Goodman, Derek Hough told reporters "You know, we're seasoned professionals. We've been on the show a long time and we know kind of know what to expect. We know the ins and outs. I think that to disrespect them, I think, is a little crossing the line."
Now 'Us Weekly' has reported that Maks' behavior has also created problems with the 'DWTS' crew, who are said to be "livid" about his antics, which they think "reflect poorly on the show." The magazine quotes an insider on the show as saying "He's a poor sport. People are suggesting he get anger management!"
So, given that Maks feels that "this is my show," who does he think will win? Although he said on his blog that he's "kind of torn" about who to root for, he told the 'Post' that J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff should take home the Mirror Ball trophy tomorrow night. (Though he still vows to never speak to his ex-fiancée Smirnoff again.) "If J.R. doesn't win, there is something fundamentally wrong with America."
He went on, "I think J.R. deserves it. It is his right to walk into 'Dancing With The Stars' and walk away with the trophy. But on top of all of that, he is a great dancer." Hinting at accusations that 'DWTS' has become a popularity contest, Maks added "You have to embrace the fact that after 13 seasons, it hasn't always been a dance competition. Therefore, J.R. needs to win this thing."
The 'DWTS' Season 13 finale kicks off tonight (Monday) with the three finalists -- Martinez, Ricki Lake and Rob Kardashian -- each performing two dances. The finale continues Tuesday night when after tallying the fan votes and judges' scores the lowest-scoring couple will be eliminated (the agony!).
The remaining two couples will then perform the Instant Samba to determine who'll take home the title and trophy.
