Jonathan Emerges a Genuine Hero in 'Bored to Death' Finale (VIDEO)

'Bored to Death' - 'Nothing I Can't Handle by Running Away'It was the season finale of 'Bored to Death' (Mon., 9PM ET on HBO), and if ratings are any indication, it may well be the last we ever see of Jonathan, Ray and George. Ratings have dropped from nearly a million viewers each week to less than a quarter of that.

Over three seasons, we've seen each of them grow as men and as strong individuals. Perhaps most shockingly of all, Jonathan has grown so much that he was able to emerge as a bona fide hero in this finale. After deciding to help his father with a $10,000 debt he owed a baseball grounds crew, Jonathan found himself held hostage instead.

But when Super Ray and his fans came -- along with George -- to rescue him, it was Jonathan who wound up rescuing them. Who knew he'd become such a crack shot, and so confident under pressure? It was a superhuman moment for him and a great cap on his character arc.

Yes, there's the bittersweet moment when we learn that his father did indeed come back for him, only it was just a bit too late. Then there's the fact that Jonathan couldn't bring himself to tell his new girlfriend that she's in fact his half-sister. So there's fodder there for another season, but as we left them it seemed our trio was finally at peace in their lives -- and dare we say, happy?

There are worse ways to leave a group of people we've come to really care about.
