Marcia Cross Almost Became a Therapist Before Landing 'Desperate Housewives' (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Dec 1st 2011 4:15PM
Marcia Cross' life has taken nearly as many twists and turns as her 'Desperate Housewives' character Bree Van De Kamp's. She told Robin Roberts on 'Good Morning America' (weekdays, 7AM ET on ABC) that before she was cast in 'Desperate Housewives,' she was on the brink of retiring from acting to become a therapist. Eight seasons later, she's still on Wisteria Lane for the show's final season.

Her character Bree might be in need of a good shrink, as she's gone back to boozing and is in full melt-down mode. "She's in such a tailspin at the moment, I don't even know how they're gonna pull her out. Maybe they should just leave her in the gutter, find her ten years later, and pull her out and throw an apron on her," Cross joked.

Cross also talked about originally reading for the role of Mary Alice Young, the show's narrator. "I wanted to be Mary-Alice, which was the voiceover, because I wanted to have a child and I thought I might be a single mother, and now I'm telling you my whole life story..." Cross said. But the show's creator Marc Cherry wanted to read for Bree, and the rest is TV history.
