'The X Factor' Recap: Top 5 Revealed - Who Was Double-Eliminated?

by Laura Prudom, posted Dec 1st 2011 9:10PM
X FactorIt was Michael Jackson week on 'X Factor,' and, for reasons probably known only to Simon Cowell, another excuse for a double elimination.

Thankfully, the poor Jackson clan weren't subjected to the results show as well as the performances (Blanket thanks you, Fox) and we're not about to prevaricate either. The remaining contestants sang 'Man in the Mirror,' with Marcus and Melanie acquitting themselves well while Chris Rene missed more notes than he hit.

Despite Steve Jones' hyperbole, only Melanie turned in a performance really worthy of the artist they were celebrating, meaning that many of the acts should've been in danger of elimination. The two artists who were sent home were ...

Astro and Drew.

Joining them in the bottom three was Marcus Canty, who was a pro about being in such a tenuous position after last week. Drew was on the verge of a meltdown when she found herself on the stage with Astro and Marcus. I guess she did admit that she didn't take criticism well a couple of weeks back (or was it a week? God, it feels like we've been doing this forever, doesn't it?).

Astro received the lowest number of votes in total and didn't seem shocked by the decision, but he took it with far more grace than his last experience in the bottom two, thanking his fans and telling them that he'd be back on the West Coast soon. L.A. stood by his man, telling Steve Jones, "this is one of the most fascinating guys I've ever met ... his career is promising to be amazing."

Drew chose Roxette's 'Listen To Your Heart' as her save me song, and it was every bit as passionate and raw as her other performances. She lost the note in the final chorus, but in terms of vocal ability, she's far more consistent than Marcus -- although some might say too consistent. (They'd be wrong, though.)

Marcus tackled Gladys Knight's 'Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye),' and it was one of his most solid performances to date, starting slow and controlled, although he lost control of his pitch as he progressed and was kind of a mess by the end. But who needs strong vocals in a singing contest? That unpolished emotion was apparently enough to sway Paula and Nicole, who chose to save Marcus over Drew, as did L.A., with only Simon voting to save his contestant and taking full responsibility for Drew being in the bottom two. He begged Paula and Nicole to give Drew another chance, buttering them up by insisting that he should've listened to the other mentors and chosen a more upbeat song last night, but apparently it was too little, too late. He's probably regretting that double-elimination decision now, huh?

Simon was so livid over his fellow judges' decision that he refused to speak when Drew was eliminated, finally being coaxed into saying, "I don't think she deserved to go home, I think she's a little star." She'll undoubtedly get a record deal (and probably years of therapy) out of the experience, but she seemed utterly disconsolate over the decision.

Personally, it seemed like entirely the wrong decision if we're basing the votes purely on talent, since Marcus, as charismatic as he might be, doesn't have the range or control that Drew has. Still, these shows will always remain popularity contests first and foremost -- just ask Chris Rene, who looked just as shocked as the rest of us when he was put through. I think my favorite moment was Steve Jones' exasperation when Simon refused to speak to him; he looked more defeated than Drew in that moment, wandering off like he might walk right off stage. And congrats on making a young girl cry, Paula!

'The X Factor' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on Fox.

Do you think that Drew and Astro deserved to go home? Were you shocked by the judges' decisions? Weigh in below.

Agree that Astro was booted off. He should have been gone last week for his attitude alone. Drew had to go based on Simon mismanaging her songs.

I think that Astro should have been booted for his behavior alone. He is an arrogant little kid, and LA is grooming him to be another mini-thug. Sad. We reward people after bad behavior, and the judges are guilty of bad bvehavior, as well. Drew can sing, and she should have stayed instead of Marcus. Marcus is milking the "Mama" angle all he can. It doesn't hurt that his Momma is pretty and charismatic. Marcus CANNOT sing as well as the average kid on the street, but he has "commercial success " written all over him. Think Usher!

I still think the best, most consistent singer is little Rachael Crow, and that little face just screams Happy! I am fairly certain that Melanie will win, but Rachael should win. Melanie is just another Mariah Carey look-alike wannabe. Rachael is fresh, original and fun, and can sing anything thrown at her.

I really feel that Astro should have been sent home right after his temper tantrum, which proved, along with Drews hysteria, that neither was old/mature enough to cope with rejection. Simon certainly does have a proclivity for young blond ladies - what was the name of last year's Idol contestant who sang "Jolene"? I really think it's a horserace between Josh and Melanie - She has a killer voice, but I love Josh, too, so I'll br happy either way -

Soooo glad Astro's gone. He couldn't sing only talk. I didn't Like his arrogance form the beginning. He probably has talent as a rapper but that's it. He 's very one dementional.

I usually agree with Simon most of the time, but not this time. I like both Marcus & Drew, but I believe Marcus is more versatile as a singer and entertainer. He deserved to stay. I think the other judges recognized that.

I think they got it right on the money. Chris and Marcus need to exit, stage left, next.

Astro doesn't sing...he talks fast!

Drew sang well..just has a different style. Not my style!!!

They both needed to leave and grow up . Neither one had a good attitude.

I have read all the comments that have been posted and it confirms why we are sitting at home and not on the judges panel. LA Reed who guided and started the careers of Pink, Rhianna just to name a few artist knows what will sell. I agreed with his comments that Drew needed to show that she could do more than a ballad. Drew has a great voice, but she has no range and every song that she performed although beautifully done sounded exactly the same. Her rendition of Bille Jean was an insult to MJ. Astro has talent as a rapper but lacks maturity. Because of his lack of maturity he lost the public when he had his temper tantrum on stage. On that note I don't think the response that Drew showed last night was any better, when she was voted off she refused to hug Paula. It made her look like a sore loser. How is the public so willing to forgive Drew’s behavior but was so unforgiving of Astro's behavior? Yes Drew sang better than Marcus, but Marcus is overall a better stage performer. If you think about the most popular artist out right now (Chris Brown, Beyonce, Gaga, Usher, Bieber, etc) not only can they sing they have that performance factor, maybe that is what the judges are looking for

Sorry.....I don't think Bieber can sing worth a flip. Maybe when his voice finishes changes, but he needs to stop all the "vocaaalllliiiizzzzinnnng", and just sing the way it is written. There is no bigger turn off for the public than all the oohing and ahhing and over vocalizing that everyone is so busy doing these days. I think we should refuse to buy ANY CD until the sisngers decide to sing and stop sounding like fighting alley cats.

I'm just tired of the judges fighting. At the beginning it was part of an excitement factor... now its just irritating. It made is seem that Paula and Nicole voted out of spite for Simon, not making a decision on their own. Drew will get signed, most of them will... the judges need to stop making the show about them, and make it about the contestants again.

Oh, and if the show stopped making the host ask stupid questions all show, he won't have to rush the judges decisions at the end.

If it wasn't for Simon Cowell, I would not even take time to watch the X factor. He is the one and only decent competent judge on x factor and was also on American Idol.
