Chord Overstreet on His Return to 'Glee' in a Speedo

by Crystal Bell, posted Dec 5th 2011 4:20PM
chord overstreet gleeGleeks, get ready. Sam Evans is returning 'Glee', and Chord Overstreet couldn't be more excited to return to the role that made him -- and his Trouty Mouth lips -- famous.

In this week's all-new 'Glee' (Tues., Dec. 6 at 8PM ET on Fox), Sam is back -- guitar and 'Red Solo Cup' in hand -- to help the New Directions win Sectionals.

This time around, Sam ditches his football cleats for a skin-tight speedo in hopes of scoring a Letterman jacket, and a date with his ex, Mercedes. But it's not going to be easy. "She's not exactly up for just dropping her current boyfriend, so that's a little frustrating for Sam," Overstreet told AOL TV. "He never really got over her."

While Overstreet can't confirm how long he'll be sticking around McKinley, he does have an exciting project coming up. After leaving 'Glee' last summer, he went straight to the studio to start working on his acoustic pop debut album, which fans can expect sometime in 2012.

"I got a lot of great stuff done, and I'm really excited about how the finished album is going to sound," Overstreet said. "I think I'll be ready to release an album around next year."

I have to say. I really enjoyed 'Red Solo Cup.' Were you excited when they gave you a country song, given your country music background?
It was so much fun. I love doing anything country because I grew up around it, so I had a lot of fun with that and really enjoyed it. It was a blast.

I'm sure Toby Keith was proud.
I hope so! I've met him before, but I really don't know him. My dad knows him well though.

'Glee' hasn't done a lot of country music before, so it's something different.
I like that. If they need anybody to cover country, I'm glad that I can do it because I just think country music is so fun and it's unfortunately something that you don't see a whole lot of on mainstream TV.

So Sam is back ... as a stripper named White Chocolate. Please explain.
Finn and Rachel are in a strip club in Kentucky. They're there to just have fun, for their own kicks and giggles, and then, they coincidentally run into Sam Evans [laughs]. No, I'm kidding. They come to Kentucky to find me to ask for help with Sectionals because Rachel is suspended. So they bring Sam back to McKinley, and he picks everything up where he left off. Some things are a little bit harder than others, like everything with Mercedes. She's not exactly up for just dropping her current boyfriend, so that's a little frustrating for Sam. He never really got over her. He had to move, and he never got a choice in the matter, so he's still hung up on her. I can't wait to see how everything between them progresses. It's a fun storyline to come back to.

For fans, I think the whole Sam/Mercedes relationship happened really suddenly. Why do you think the couple works?
I think it developed over the summer, like a summer fling, but I think that they click so well because of their personalities. She's a little spunky, and has an amazing voice, so that's probably it.

Oh, of course. Are you a fan of Mercedes and Santana's Adele mash-up that aired a few weeks ago?
Definitely. That was great. It was so entertaining, and just the mixture of those two songs, I thought that was amazing. It's one of the best mash-ups we've ever done, and the vocals on it were fantastic.

Is there going to be drama between Sam and Mercedes' current boyfriend, Bubba?
I don't know yet, but I'm sure there will be. Probably, just because I'm a confrontational person myself, especially when it comes to girls with boyfriends.

Now, when you got the call that you were coming back, did you ever expect a stripper storyline?
I was shocked at first. There was definitely that initial response of, 'Um ... how long to I have to get to the gym?' I was like, 'If I'm going to be a stripper, I need to at least have a little bit of tone on my body.' I had, like, a week to get ready, so I had to work out hardcore. I thought it was pretty funny, though, and then I saw that they were going to have me do a country song. It was all very goofy and funny, which is my character, so I thought it was cool.

Was it difficult to get back into dancing?
Oh, it was really hard. I almost killed myself learning how to dance again because my body was so sore and not used to it.

Did Zach Woodlee giving you a hard time?
Zach's hilarious. He makes dancing fun, and honestly, he's the only reason I got to dance at all, so thank you Zach [laughs].

Sam's also going to join the synchronized swim team this season. Are you excited for some pool time?
Well, I've been synchronized swimming since I was 5. I'm actually a professional synchronized swimmer, so I told them about that storyline. No, I'm kidding, I'm not really. I'm going to try and take lessons so that I can method act my way through it [laughs]. I took swim lessons when I was 4 or 5, so I think I'll be fine.

Why synchronized swimming? Couldn't Sam have joined the water polo team? That seems more up Sam's alley.
I think water polo is too rough. Synchronized swimming is probably more of a sport that you'd get made fun of for, and I think it's more of a challenge for Sam to do that and compromise that to get this Letterman jacket that's going to get this girl. It's a pretty ballsy move, and Sam wants to prove that he'll do anything for her, even embarrass himself.

I hope this means we can expect some elaborate poolside musical productions.
I think so! Yeah, I mean, why not? I haven't shot any yet. We have a couple that we're working on. I've been in the studio 2-3 times a week. I'm working on 'River of Jordan' right now, and there's a lot of big numbers coming up.

What about Quinn and Sam? I always liked them as a couple. I felt like Quinn was actually happy. Is there anything coming up for the two of them?
We do have a couple of scenes together, and she is a little crazy, but she's been through a lot these past few years, so we'll give her a break on that one. I don't really know what they're going to do as far as the two of us exploring that, but we'll see.

There's been a lot of talk of upcoming guest stars. Do you have anyone in mind?
It would have to be Christopher Walken, without a doubt. He'd just be Christopher Walken. He could be a school janitor, like in 'Joe Dirt.' He could be a teacher. He could be Finn's dad, where we find out that he's not really dead. Major twist!

I can see it now, Finn's dad is not dead!
He's just Christopher Walken and he's been acting for the last 18 years.

Damian McGinty, 'The Glee Project' winner, has also joined the cast this season, and it looks like the two of you have gotten along quite well.
Damian is such a cool guy. Love him. He's actually really great at an American accent, and you should get him to do it if you ever talk to him. Nobody really knows that, but he can do one.

Can you do an Irish accent? Do you guys practice with each other?
[in Irish accent] Oh, I just talk like this every now and then, arr. It's not like a good Irish accent, but it's a start.

And finally, I have to know, why was Chewbacca on the 'Glee' set?
It's this guy that goes around Paramount dressing like Chewbacca, actually, and he walked onto our set, and we were like, 'Can we get a picture?' So we all got pictures with Chewbacca.

I don't think that's true. I hear that he's making an appearance in the Christmas episode.
What? I don't know anything about that. I know nothing. I was just taking a picture with Chewbacca because I'm a big 'Star Wars' fan.

'Glee' airs Tuesdays at 8PM ET on Fox.

"...so that's probably it." lol poor chord, constantly forced to cover for the writers' complete lack of caring. it's actually sad how little time and effort seems to have been put into coming up with this sam/mercedes thing, and yet we're all expected to be so excited by it? um no thanks.

Odd

Samcedes! YAY! And I wish the interview person wouldn't try to talk for the rest of the fandom in saying that Sam/Mercedes happened too quick or something. Many fans felt that they made perfect sense and want them together. Its clear the interview person is a Quinn/Sam fan and is inserting their bias. Thing is, I doubt the writers would have Sam do all this for Mercedes only to have him turn around and want to be with Quinn.
