'Glee' Star Harry Shum Jr. On His Biggest Dance Number Yet

by Chris Harnick, posted Dec 6th 2011 4:37PM
Harry Shum Jr. InterviewHarry Shum Jr. has had one heck of a year on 'Glee.' His character, Mike Chang, had his first solo, taught the rest of New Directions how to dance like pros and had a meaty storyline with his parents.

And all of that in just the first half of the third season.

"I think the storyline with the dad and the family is kind of an ongoing thing," Shum told AOL TV during a phone interview in early December. "I don't know when we'll see it actually wrap up and move on to something else."

After two seasons as a background player, Shum is getting his chance to shine in the spotlight. But he's not the only one getting some love from writers in upcoming episodes-- he's rooting for his on-screen girlfriend to get the same treatment.

"I'm hoping that more is happening with Mike and Tina that we'll get in deeper with, but more focused on Tina, which I'm happy about," he said. "It's been a long time coming since we actually saw a storyline with Tina."

McKinley High School's two glee clubs, New Directions and Trouble Tones, face off, New Directions and Trouble Tones, face-off in Sectionals, and the underdogs have an ace up their sleeve: returning member Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) and a Jackson family medley. Yep, Jackson 5, Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson all get the 'Glee' treatment.

Glee Season 3 SectionalsWhat can you tell me about Sectionals? I know there's some Jackson 5.
We're doing Jackson 5, 'ABC,' 'Control' by Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson's 'Man in the Mirror.' Nice little Jackson medley, bringing the family together.

What was that like for you?
It was fun, man. It was so much fun. It's always scary to do Michael, but I think we kind of interpreted it in our own way. I think what was really special about this particular Sectionals, this was probably the most intricate dance number that the group has done. For me, in particular, I'm just really proud of everyone; they really came through. I think our choreographer was extremely happy because everyone worked really hard on all the dance moves. Hopefully, it came out good. I haven't seen it yet, but it felt like it turned out good.

You've had a lot more to do this season than you have the past two seasons. You have another scene with your TV dad in 'Hold on to Sixteen'?
What ends up happening is, Mike's dad isn't too keen on him pursuing dance. In our last scene, he pretty much disowned Mike and Mike pretty much agreed to that, basically. I think we'll come back around and see what the outcome of that is and hopefully, see his dad come around.

I know Mike Chang is a senior at McKinley. Have you heard anything about your future with the show?
No, I really don't have a clue as far as what's going to happen. I know he's a senior, but I do know the mention of whether we're going to still be able to stay on the show. Just because you graduate doesn't mean you're leaving the show.

Harry Shum Jr. InterviewDid you have any real-life experiences that helped you get prepared for Mike's storyline with his parents?
I've had different personal drama and things to draw from. My parents weren't stereotypical and pressuring me to go to college. They mentioned it a lot and constantly, but it wasn't a do or die thing, like, "You have to do this or you're done." For me, I've always had this work ethic. I started working when I was 9 or 10. They instilled that in me, so I had that type of work ethic where I didn't want to let them down. That's where it really came from for the character.

What can fans expect from your site, HarryShum.com? I've heard about viral videos, behind-the-scenes exclusives. What else?
I launched the site about a week and a half ago and I'm hoping to have a central hub for my fans to be able to go to and to know what's happening with me and my projects. But I'm also creating little viral videos because I love to do little projects on the side. I've done some videos with some popular YouTubers. I'm about to launch kind of a little gadget blog show-ish. It's something that I'm passionate about -- I love gadgets. I always end up sharing with my friends and people around me, so I figured, why not do that with the whole world and have fun with them and make some cool videos with them?

Is there a particular gadget that tops your holiday wish list?
Man, there are some cool ones. Obviously anything that accessorizes or enhances the iPhone is always pretty cool. There's this really cool ring -- it's like a ring -- but it turns into a Bluetooth headset. It has a dial in front where it has your caller ID right on your ring. It vibrates when there's a phone call and you take it off and you give it a little flip and put it on your ear and it becomes a Bluetooth headset, which to me is mind-blowing. You ring turns into a phone!

Anything you want to add about the site?
When people visit, there's just going to be a lot more content upcoming. That's what I've been working on for this past month. I'm working hard to push out fun content for people to come and visit. I just want to thank all the fans for following me on social media, but I'm going to take it up a notch. Stay tuned!

'Glee' airs Tuesdays, 8PM ET on Fox
