'Glee' Season 3, Episode 8 Recap: It's Sectionals Time! And the Winner Is...

glee season 3 hold on to sixteen['Glee' -- 'Hold on to Sixteen']

Say what you want about 'Glee,' but any show that can actually pull off an amazing 'Man in the Mirror' cover is OK in my books, and that's exactly what the New Directions did in 'Hold on to Sixteen. 'But it was more than just 'the Sectionals episode.' It actually gave me some hope for the rest of the season, hope that the writers had not forgotten about their characters.

Crazy Quinn? She's gone ... Hooray! It's been a rough few seasons with Quinn, but here's hoping that her crazy spell is officially over because I happen to really love Dianna Agron.

I don't know what I enjoyed more in this episode: Sam's anticipated return, the Troubletones awesome 'Survivor/I Will Survive' diva mash-up, the New Directions' Jackson family medley or Rachel and Quinn's surprising character developments.

But let's get back to Sectionals. It was a battle for show choir dominance, and in the end, only one glee club could advance to Regionals. And the Sectionals glory goes to ...

New Directions!

But let's be real: Did that really surprise anyone? Of course the New Directions were going to take it. It wasn't easy, though. Rachel and Finn had to travel all the way to Kentucky to pick up Sam Evans, who just so happened to be stripping under the stage name White Chocolate. It took some convincing. After all, he makes $60 for a 15 minute lap on that stripper stage. Would you want to give that up?

However, as Rachel and Finn explain to Sam, he's just a teenager. Doesn't he want to enjoy his youth? (Keep in mind that this was a major theme of the episode ... see below.)

So Sam is back at McKinley -- and he's totally after Mercedes' heart, and while she may not be ready to ditch Bubba yet, Chord Overstreet told me that Sam has a plan to win back Mercedes -- and it involves a speedo.

I was never much of a Sam fan, but I will admit that his cover of Toby Keith's 'Red Solo Cup' was pretty great. However, does anyone else wonder how Rory knew all of the words? Is Toby Keith really popular in Ireland. I was not aware of this.

Dianna Agron also looked extra cute singing along. Every once in awhile, I'm reminded that crazy Quinn is actually played by non-crazy, super cool Dianna.

Thanks to a little help from Sam -- who pulled off some sexy new dance moves thanks to his stripping days -- Mr. Scheue's glee club prevailed, and they did it without Rachel! Or Mercedes ... or Santana!

Let's just give it up for Tina, who finally had something to do after being ignored all season. Not only did she show off her vocal chops in 'ABC,' but she also proved that she was the best girlfriend ever by confronting Mike Chang's father, begging him to watch his son dance.

And he does! File this under: Totally saw this one coming. Mr. Chang shows up at Sectionals to watch his son in action, and he's more than a little impressed. In fact, he's now convinced that his son needs to be a dancer. Mike doesn't have to worry about missing the deadlines either because Tina -- the best girlfriend ever -- applied for him!

One of those prestigious dance schools happens to be NYU. I've never been more excited to welcome a fictional character to my alma mater.

Meanwhile, Blaine and Sam have a major blowout during rehearsals. Blaine wants to incorporate some of his Warbler moves into the New Directions' Sectionals routine, but according to Sam, that's totally boy band. So Sam tries to teach the guys some of his newfound stripper moves (did we learn nothing from Season 1's 'Hairography'?!), but that doesn't go over too well with Blaine.

glee hold on to sixteenQuestion: Does anyone else think that Mike Chang should be the one teaching these guys how to dance?

This leads to a long-awaited confrontation between Blaine and Finn, and the glee club co-captain finally admits that he's jealous of the handsome Warbler. Finn has finally come to terms that Blaine is the most talented, well-rounded gleek that they have -- aside from Rachel. They agree to work together to win Sectionals.

In other news, since when is Rachel the most mature, reasonable character on the show?

She talked Quinn out of her crazy scheme, and she even agreed to help her apply to ... wait for it ... Yale! Yeah, Quinn wants to go to Yale. I can totally see her becoming one of those Ivy League super liberal feminists.

After three seasons of crazy, Quinn finally has a breakthrough, thanks to Shelby.

Quinn barges in on Shelby before Sectionals to tell her that she's going to tell Principal Figgins about her and Puck's scandalous relationship. The two share a heart-to-heart, and Quinn realizes that her crazy scheme would only hurt Beth more -- and that she's only 17 and needs to relax and enjoy her senior year.

Although, I really wish Shelby would be having these kinds of moments with Rachel. After all, Idina Menzel's time of 'Glee' is running out.

After ditching her crazy alter ego, Quinn convinces Mercedes, Santana and Brittany to join the New Directions again. As happy as I am for the New Directions, I'll miss the Troubletones. Those divas put together some of the best mash-ups in 'Glee' history.

R.I.P. Troubletones.

This episode also saw the return of Harmony, played by 'The Glee Project' runner-up, Lindsay Pearce. Although her glee club doesn't win Sectionals, she does reveal that she's only a sophomore. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Harmony transfered to McKinley for Season 4. In 'Glee' anything is possible.

Most 'Glee'-ful lines of the night:

"I don't like you. I don't like the way you talk to my boyfriend. I don't like your little meerkat face. I don't like your CW hair."

"Quinn, you've got what I call rich white girl problems."

"After being bullied so much, I took up boxing."

"This is your path, son, so you must follow it. Make your mother and I proud. Do whatever you can. Apply to dance schools, the best ones."

"Just think, I'm a sophomore, and I'm already this good. Next year is going to be a blood bath."

"We're kind of friends, huh?'

"What do you think about Yale? I'm not the singer that you and Finn are, but they have a great drama program."

'Glee' airs Tuesdays at 8PM on Fox.

this was a good episode. there were a few things that were like huh? like how easy sam's parent let him move away to help a glee club? and when did he become country.? it was strange. crazy quinn? really someone that messed up can be totally sane in just minutes? grr glee. i was amused by the confrontation between kurt and sebastian but a little miffed. i thought for sure he was brought in to finally have a blaine storyline yet now it seems he is turning into a prop for kurt. like karofsky and blaine. blaine needs to stand alone., its time. we have met sam siblings and parents. and blaine is part of a popular couple and even darren doesnt know who blaine is. the scene with blaine and finn. darren was awesome. his facial expressions and his eyes convey everything. after the argument he almost looked beatened and defeated. so tiny next to corey. i would have liked finn to be agry about feeling the way he did or does. but its glee. everyone is forgiven. the performances were good. troubletones were great. lindsay was good. nd. good to hear tina sing. abc was a good group performance. control.. hey its kevin and darren, man in the mirror. liked the way they did it. and smiled watching darren do the mj whoo , whoo.lol. episode was a strong b+

Country music is actually oddly popular in Ireland.

LOVED this episode! First one in I don't know how many episodes that I actually rewound and watched the performance numbers. I did think it was odd that New Directions got three songs, but hey...whatever! And they totally pulled off "Man in the Mirror."

Good episode, fun songs. Great uniting song at the end which takes over for my generation's youth anthem from Alphaville.

Why does New Directions get to sing three songs, while the other groups get one?

What kind of exceedingly poor "homeless" family has a cavernous kitchen and the ability to send guests to far off "other rooms"? No wonder Schneider can't pay the mortgage AND send the kids to soccer camp.

This was John Schneider's big appearance, touted on these pages a number of weeks ago? Sorry, John.

Those are the things that stuck out for me. I really liked the episode beyond those things. It was great to see everyone come back together. I'm a sucker for "The Band Gets Back Together" moments. I love Santana and Mercedes songs. It was an episode where everybody got to win...and I like that.
Plus, great insults this week. Santana's certainly, but Kurt stepped up and teed off too.
Hey, did you hear Santana's a lesbian? Old news, I guess....One hell of a short arc.
