'MythBusters' Sends Cannonball Through Home -- By Mistake!

by Chris Harnick, posted Dec 7th 2011 11:15AM
Mythbusters CannonballThe producers of 'Mythbusters' apparently never learned not to play ball near the house. When testing out a stunt in Dublin, California, a cannonball struck a home, leaving holes in the walls after "a few unfortunate bounces," as the local sheriff's department spokesman explained.

According to MSNBC, a projectile from an Alameda County firing range missed its target and hit a home, going through one wall and exiting through another.

There were no injuries and no word on what exactly the 'MythBusters' experiment included.

The San Francisco Chronicle said "cantaloupe-sized cannonball" damaged the home and minivan of the Gill family.

The van and the cannonball were taken away as evidence.

"Crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy," Sgt. J.D. Nelson, a spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff's Department, told the Chronicle. "You wouldn't think it was possible."

Nelson said the Discovery Channel has used the bomb disposal range for shooting more than 50 episodes over the past few years. This is the first reported incident. As part of the show's deal, the series does not pay a set fee and does take out insurance in case of mishap.

"On Tues., Dec. 6, 2011, 'MythBusters,' produced for Discovery Channel by Beyond Productions, was filming on a closed set at the Alameda County Sheriff's Department bomb range in Alameda County, California," Discovery and Beyond Productions said in a statement. "During the testing, a cannonball took an unforeseen bounce from a safety berm. No injuries were reported, but damage was reported in one Dublin home and one parked car. Sgt. J.D. Nelson, Public Information Officer and bomb technician for the Alameda County Sheriff's office, who is a regular safety explosives expert for 'MythBusters,' was on site and all proper safety protocol was observed. Beyond Productions is currently assessing the situation and working with those whose property was affected."

Probably the first cannonball to hit a house in the US since the Civil War.

These guys are ok. So they had a over shot, nobody was hurt, they will make it right and they will learn from it.
Who hasn't had a bad day at work? Most of their shows are interesting, a few have been dumb. But when they took on the myth that "we really didn't land a man on the moon it was a Hollywood fake"...and proved every single argument was wrong and YES we did land men on the moon... I could have hugged those guys. God bless 'em.

I've always liked this show, they have clarified myths I've been skeptical about for years. Now I'm starting to wonder if they are really doing enough valid research to come to the conclusions they reach.

I love the show and my two FAVORITE 'Propeller Heads' Adam and Jamie. Anyone would envy their jobs! That said, accidents happen and the important thing is that no one was injured. I'm sure the Discovery Channel will re-imburse the families who's homes/SUV suffered damage and maybe even feature them on the show. KAYLOVSHIM is rediculous by even discussing sueing them. it's frivolus law suits, like sueing people for accidents, that is tearing this country apart. Accidents happen, pay the damages, make the apologies, feature the families that were impacted on the Mythbusters Episode and live happily ever after!

I have watched these guys play with cannons and almost every thing they do is wrong what they need is a cannon expert not an explosives expert. As former chairman for 9 years of the National Civil War Artillery Association they need to stay away from cannons unless they obtain a proper teacher
