The 'Community' Cast Previews Their Gleeful Christmas Extravaganza Episode

by Maggie Furlong, posted Dec 8th 2011 10:00AM
Last year's 'Community' Christmas episode ranks at the top of my list of favorite holiday-themed TV episodes ever. So how will this year's stack up?

Well there's no funny clay figurines or stop-motion animation, but that's not to say it won't be as magical or uncontrollable as Abed's adventure last season. I mean, we already know there will be a rap video. In 'Regional Holiday Music' (Thurs., Dec. 8, 8PM ET on NBC), the Greendale glee club is sidelined, so the study group has to step up to sing in their place.

I caught up with Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Donald Glover and Gillian Jacobs on the 'Community' set to hear more about their song-and-dance-filled holiday celebration, Troy and Abed's sweet rap, why this episode will be particularly gif-worthy and the "very awesome character" that 'Saturday Night Live' funnyman Taran Killam is playing.

Singing and dancing and glee!
McHale: "Yeah, there's all that. I'm not gonna say anything! It has a lot to do with the glee club. And Chang is so funny in it ... there's something he does that's so funny, it'll make you pee in your pants."

Pudi: "This Christmas episode is awesome. I'm so excited about it. We actually spent six days shooting this one, which is not a record for us, but it's up there. There's a lot of musical numbers in it ... it's very special. It required a lot of dance choreography, which Chevy was particularly excited about. [Laughs] It's a special episode again. Abed definitely spearheads a movement towards embracing the holiday spirit."

Brie: "The Christmas episode is going to be fantastic. A lot of singing ... "

Taran Killam & Danny Pudi, 'Community' Jacobs: "Christmas, I think, is going to be epic, and I think everybody is going to be shown off really well."

Guest star Taran Killam
Pudi: "Taran Killam from 'Saturday Night Live' is guest starring in it ... he plays a very awesome character who helps us try to capture that Christmas spirit. It's another one of these episodes where we go different places and you get to kind of see people do things we don't do every week. Anytime we get to see people sing or do dance numbers, I think it's always a treat."

McHale: "Taran Killam is so great. He is f--king funny."

Brie: "Taran Killam was killin' 'em."

Spreading Christmas spirit
Pudi: "I think that's the theme -- after last year, we know that Abed has this affinity for bringing everybody together on Christmas. He sees it as one of those moments to kind of capture the feeling of family and meaning. Especially with his family situation kind of going off the tracks last year, this year the family truly is his Greendale buddies."

Brie: "There will definitely be more of Annie's panties. I can promise a gif-worthy number. It's gonna be the most gif-worthy episode since paintball last year. Now that I know that Dan Harmon does it on purpose, I understand it more. I mean, I'm on board. He knows that, obviously."

McHale: "I don't know if it's called spirit ... I'm just going to say more that it's an affliction that you're a slave to."

Revisiting Abed's break with reality?
Pudi: "There's a revisit to certain things. We're live this year. We're real human beings. We're not claymation, I can say that."

Troy and Abed's epic rapping for 'Christmas Infiltration'
Glover: "I mean, that episode is going to be so choice. I love it. There's a rap video with me and Abed that is f--king fly. It's a little bigger than our rap from Season 1 -- this ain't no 'Disco Spider.'"

'Community' wins all the Oscars!
Glover: "Dan [Harmon] was like, 'You should write this rap,' and I was like 'No.' Dan's really good at it. He won an Oscar for it. I mean an Emmy. [Laughs] Yes, he won an Oscar for writing for television, which is unheard of! He's that good! It's an awesome rap."
