Six NBC Shows on the Bubble
by Allison Waldman, posted May 3rd 2010 5:27PM

The past season was a tumultuous one for NBC, what with the Jay Leno experience turning the primetime schedule into a whirl. The fact that Leno's ten o'clock show was a disaster resulted in NBC scrambling to fill in during the second season. Fortunately, at least one legit hit has emerged -- 'Parenthood.'
Still, as the network contemplates the future, there's really six programs that could be called on the bubble, teetering between a pick up or a cancellation. So what is the likelihood that NBC will renew these shows? Here's our take:
'Community' - 'The Art of Discourse' Recap
by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 30th 2010 8:05AM

(S01E022) I don't even go to college anymore (because I went at the right age ... DUH!), and those damned three teenagers were driving me crazy, too. Not crazy enough to do what the above scene is depicting, perhaps, but it makes me wonder how we let our teenagers survive into adulthood. They're almost too annoying.
It's nice to see, though, that as adults we are able to stay above their juvenile antics. We'd certainly never reciprocate in kind. We have our own pranks to pull. After all, that's what college is all about. It's on Abed's list.

'Community' - 'Contemporary American Poultry' Recap
by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 22nd 2010 10:45PM
(S01E21) Tonight, on a "very special episode" of 'Community,' Abed learns that there is a right way to being accepted and embraced by your fellow students, and then there's the quick way.
'Community' Webisodes Hit the Web (VIDEO)
by Jane Boursaw, posted Apr 22nd 2010 5:30PM
Have you been waiting impatiently for 'Community' to come back? Well, the wait is over, my friends, because tonight at 8PM ET on NBC, there's a brand new episode with the titillating title, 'Contemporary American Poultry.' It's a devastating tragedy when a chicken finger shortage grips Greendale Community College, but Jeff and Troy are on the job, which causes Britta to think about the causes she currently supports.
But, wait! If you just can't bear the thought of waiting until tonight to get your 'Community' fix, a couple of webisodes are currently online that are pretty freakin' funny.
McHale vs. Seacrest - April Fool's Edition
by Nick Zaino, posted Apr 2nd 2010 10:00AM
The feud between Joel McHale and Ryan Seacrest heated up yesterday when the 'Community' and 'The Soup' star redesigned Seacrest's web site for April Fool's Day. The site was packed with McHale-related photos, audio clips, video clips, and links. The 'American Idol' banner ads showed McHale's photo. Even the Twitter link went to McHale's account, where he disclosed Seacrest's Twitter password to be "hairlesslittlechoirboybody." According to Entertainment Weekly's Popwatch column, the site was crippled with traffic for a portion of the day, but was available later. McHale's Facebook update, shown on the right side of the site, asked readers to help crash the site again and to keep visiting Seacrest's Twitter account.
'Community' - 'The Science of Illusion' Recap

(S01E20) One of the criticisms about 'Community' throughout this season has been with the characterization of Britta, as portrayed by Gillian Jacobs. While the rest of the ensemble has received praise for their goofy character quirks and the humor they bring to the series, Jacobs has been considered a bit of a buzzkill in the fan community.Big props to the producers and writers of the series for tackling this criticism head on by making Britta's lack of "fun" the central plot of the episode. In doing so, they even did a respectable job of explaining to us how they see her role in the study group, and I guess I can buy it.
On the other side, because of April Fool's Day, Annie and Shirley are temporarily hired as campus security guards, just in time for a real crime to solve. Did I mention Pierce in a wizard's robe waving around a cookie on a stick?
'Community' - 'Beginner Pottery' Recap
by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 19th 2010 12:22PM
(S01E19) "Congratulations, you failed a class so easy that people passing in the hallway get a contact credit."Utilizing their setting on a college campus has allowed 'Community' to seamlessly stream in guest stars without ruining the flow of the series. This week, Jeff took another stab at a "blow-off" class, bringing us the incomparable Tony Hale as the ethereal instructor of Beginning Pottery, not to mention Lee Majors as the sailing teacher.
While Jeff was able to get Abed and Annie to join him in pottery, Pierce, Troy and Shirley instead took to the high seas ... of the parking lot, when they signed up for a sailing class. Jeff's journey was one in which he had to learn that being the "cool guy" doesn't necessarily mean he's good at everything. The lesson came from a not-so-surprising source: the resident expert on not being good at things.
'Community' - 'Basic Genealogy' Recap
by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 12th 2010 12:39PM

(S01E18) Joel Mchale caught a McPheever this week when Katharine McPhee guest-starred as Amber, a hot chick on campus. The format of 'Community' makes it so easy to drop in guest stars, and yet they didn't just make McPhee simply another student. Instead, we got a "Family Day" event where everybody got to bring in members of their family.
On 'American Idol,' where she came in second to Taylor Hicks, McPhee always touted herself as a singer-actress, so I was looking forward to seeing what skills she would bring to the set. While she wasn't given a very challenging role in Amber, she proved that she could hang with the big boys without sticking out like a sore thumb, so I'll give her kudos for that.
It was a blast seeing Shirley's kids again, as well as Abed's dad. Troy's grandmother, on the other hand ... I don't even know what to say. That mean old relative is a sitcom staple, but still this on went in a very disturbing direction. "I don't understand you, Britta!" Troy shouted to her at one point, and I'm right there with him.
Katharine McPhee on Singing, Acting, and 'Community'
by Nick Zaino, posted Mar 11th 2010 2:03PM
Katharine McPhee is a singer turned actor made famous as a singer by a television show (more specifically, by 'American Idol'). If that's hard for fans to figure out, imagine how it feels for McPhee, who has a new album out, 'Unbroken,' a pilot for NBC called 'The Pink House,' and a guest appearance tonight on 'Community,' playing the stepdaughter of Chevy Chase's character. In between that, she's shifting tour dates around to accommodate her shooting schedule. It's clear McPhee is where she wants to be, but it can leave her a bit scattered. "I'm just really grateful that I'm a person who doesn't just have to rely on one thing," she said in a recent media conference call, "because I'm a real - I mean I'm not ADD but two of my friends used to joke - my husband always jokes like that I'm ADD just because I can't really focus on something for very long."
NBC Renews 'Community,' 'The Office,' and '30 Rock'
by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 6th 2010 9:09AM
NBC already renewed 'Parks and Recreation' in January, and today they also renewed the other sitcoms on their Thursday night lineup, 'Community,' 'The Office,' and '30 Rock.'
No real surprise, though 'Community' could have gone either way. Creator Dan Harmon told the cast about the renewal and recorded it. Look at Yvette Nicole Brown's face as she thinks the show might have been canceled.

'Community' - 'Physical Education' Recap
by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 5th 2010 2:39PM

(S01E17) Well, Joel McHale promised nudity on 'Community,' and nudity the series delivered last night. Unfortunately, at least half of that nudity came in the form of "worse than Dennis Franz' ass on 'NYPD Blue.'" The rest was probably more pleasant for those inclined to appreciate that sort of nudity.
And before the parents groups get up in arms, everything that censors fear was hidden behind pool tables, but that isn't to say that a large portion of the student body didn't get to see a large portion of a student's body.
Abed provided the lesson this week, as well as a surprising double-role. And speaking of double roles, Abed and Troy really took it to the next level with their closing credits gag -- it took me a second to realize who they were.
Joel McHale Says There Will Be Nudity in Tomorrow's 'Community'
by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 3rd 2010 9:00PM
If you're a fan of Joel McHale, 'Community' and flagrant full-frontal nudity, then here's your Christmas present. The 'Soup' host and 'Community' star sent out a warning on his Twitter page that reads, "So ... on this Thursday's new 'Community' I'm pretty much going to be naked. I'm sending this tweet to prepare my family."
I know one person who is really excited to see such a hot actor in next to nothing on his TV. That's right, Mercedes-Benz marketing vice president Stephen Cannon!
Alison Brie On Shifting Between 'Mad Men' And 'Community'
by Joel Keller, posted Feb 18th 2010 2:02PM
Usually during a press tour all-star party, there's one or two unexpectedly popular stars who just seem to attract throngs and throngs of reporters for the entire night. A couple of years ago, it was George Takei right after he started on 'Heroes.' This year, the NBC star attracting the attention at their all-star party in Pasadena last month was Alison Brie. Why? Well, besides being cute and chatty, having significant supporting roles in two critically-acclaimed shows probably helped. Brie not only plays the uptight and naïve Annie on the comedy 'Community,' but she also plays Trudy, the hard-driving wife of Pete Campbell (played by Vincent Kartheiser) on 'Mad Men.'
I managed to wait out the crowds and get a few solo minutes with Brie. We talked about how she shifts between the high comedy of 'Community' and the intense drama of 'Men,' and if her presence in 'Men's' finale means she'll be back for season four.
What Shows are On the Bubble?
by Allison Waldman, posted Feb 15th 2010 3:00PM
If you read Brad's take on The Hollywood Reporter list of endangered TV shows, you might be surprised that the 'experts' have some weak rated shows coming back for another season. THR puts 'Community' in the safe category, giving it a 90% chance of renewal. It also put 'Chuck' in the 90% category.
Joe Adalian wrote about bubble shows on The Wrap, and he has 'Chuck' slam-dunking another renewal out of NBC. The surprises on his list was a death blow for 'Gary Unmarried' and 'Rules of Engagement.'
Really? That's not a certainty considering that 'Rules' hasn't even aired yet. It did well in the ratings last spring, enough to be a midseason renewal. And 'Gary' has performed on par with 'The New Adventures of Old Christine,' which has a good shot at being renewed.
