'Something Pitchy:' Does Lauren Alaina Stand a Chance Against Scotty McCreery?

by Hilary Rothing, posted May 20th 2011 1:50AM
Cut yourself a slice of apple pie and get those flags in the air cuz it doesn't get more American than good 'ole boy Scotty McCreery singing his boots off against southern belle, Lauren Alaina.

After the disappointing elimination of 'Something Pitchy' favorite, Haley Reinhart, myself, Rickey Yaneza ( and MJ Santilli (MJ's Big Blog) question whether or not either of these two are ready for the big time.

Also on our minds, does Lauren really have a shot at besting this season's All-Star, Scotty? Will the 'American Idol' season ten finale feel more like a country fair talent show than one of the biggest televised competitions of the year? We discuss all that, plus Il Volo, Nicole Scherzinger and Lauren's mom in this post-Top 3 results show edition of AOL's 'American Idol' talk show, 'Something Pitchy!'

'American Idol' Reveals Its Top 2: Who Went Home? (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 20th 2011 12:08AM
Top Three, 'American Idol'It's been a long season, and in the end it's come down to two teenage country singers and one bluesy girl with a rocker heart on 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX). All three of them got to visit their hometowns and sing their hearts out on three songs last night.

FOX was so excited about the record number of votes they recorded for this stage of the competition that they put out a press release touting it Thursday morning, which stole a little thunder from Ryan Seacrest's announcement that 'Idol' pulled in 95 million votes.

Of course, with the addition of online voting this season, shouldn't they be expected to reach new records each week in the voting? But it's not how many votes they racked up that mattered. It's who got the most votes. Which two move on to next week's finalists?

Lauren Alaina Surveys Tornado Damage During Her Visit Home on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 20th 2011 12:02AM
Lauren Alaina, 'American Idol'It was a bittersweet homecoming for 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX) Top 3 finalist Lauren Alaina. While she was on the show, a series of tornadoes wreaked havoc on the South, devastating much of her home region.

So while it was exciting to get that 'Idol' hometown welcome with the crowds and adulation, it was also Lauren's first chance to see the damage the storms caused. It was an emotional rollercoaster as she was stunned at what she saw.

"I cheered my last basketball game in this high school," she said of a building just recognizable as a school. It was a moving homecoming as she experienced the emotional lows of the storm, enjoyed stories of heroism during them and then got to sing for throngs of her hometown fans. A girl could get used to that, we're sure.

Josh Turner Surprised Scotty McCreery During His 'American Idol' Home Visit (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 19th 2011 11:56PM
Josh Turner & Scotty McCreery, 'American Idol'Every season, one of the most heartwarming episodes on 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX) is when the top finalists get to go home for that amazingly warm welcome from their hometown communities. With such young finalists this season, it was overwhelming for the likes of 17-year old Scotty McCreery.

At one point, he simply broke down in the limousine from the constant stream of love and support he was getting. Later, he about lost it completely when country star Josh Turner surprised him on stage with the song 'Your Man.' Scotty turned the opening lines of that song into his signature phrase early in the competition.

"I've only lived about 17 years so far, but this might just be the best day of my life," Of course, he hadn't received the results of the Top 3 voting yet. If he made the finals and got a chance to sing for the title of 'American Idol,' there's another day that might vie for best.

Blake Lewis: 'Scotty Slayed It, Haley Sang From Her Soul'

Holy Top 3 'American Idol!!!'

I remember when I went home for my "homecoming celebration" during the Top 3. It was nuts! It was super intense coming home - seeing all these fans you reached week in and week out and finally getting the chance to meet them. Very surreal and exciting.

It looked pretty crazy for the contestants this year, too, but they really didn't show much of them going home. They barely showed anything at all. Oh well.

Last night's show featured Beyonce mentoring the contestants on the songs they picked. It was cool to see such a big vocalist give them critiques. She seemed genuinely excited to be there with Lauren, Scotty and Haley.

Scotty McCreery, 'American Idol'With a special two-hour episode tonight, 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX) took a little extra time to talk to some of the finalist's families out in the audience. Particular attention was paid to the youngest contestants and their parents.

After Scotty McCreery got rave reviews for tackling Kenny Rogers' 'She Believes in Me,' Ryan Seacrest threw it out to his dad in the audience to get a handle on what it's like as the father of a teenage boy to see your son competing at this level.

"Words really can't describe how proud we all are of him," his father said in a low voice much like his famous son's.

Lauren Alaina Gave Jennifer Lopez 'Goosies' on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

Lauren Alaina, 'American Idol'When Lauren Alaina performed 'I Hope You Dance' by Lee Ann Womack on 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX) this week, she got a critique that could only be genuine praise. And it came from Jennifer Lopez's body.

"You cannot buy those," Lopez said, stroking her arm. "Those are not for sale. Those only come out when somebody makes them come out. You gave me just goosies from head to toe."

Clearly, Lopez had an emotional connection with Lauren's song, and from it made a bold prediction that Lauren had won that round of the competition, before Haley and Scotty had even sung. It proved to be a prediction she stuck by even after the other two finalists performed.

Haley Reinhart Performs With Her Father, Falls on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 19th 2011 1:07AM
Haley Reinhart, 'American Idol'Haley Reinhart certainly had a memorable opening number for this semi-final performance episode of 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX). She became the first contestant to perform during the show with a family member on-stage when her father joined her on Led Zeppelin's 'What Is and What Should Never Be.'

He proved a consummate guitarist and a professional all around. Poor Haley, either flummoxed by her father's presence, or just unlucky in the moment, took a tumble at one point when trying to climb the stairs in front of the judges, but she recovered quickly and finished strong.

"Did you fall for me?" quipped Steven Tyler. But, more seriously, he added, "It's not about how many times you fall, it's how many times you get back up."
