James Durbin Shocked by Elimination, Has a Hunch Who Will Win 'American Idol'

by Hilary Rothing, posted May 13th 2011 2:20PM
"Give metal a chance!" Those words have been James Durbin's battle cry throughout his 'American Idol' run and his parting comments during today's exit interview conference call.

"It's been a real whirlwind of emotion, but I've been really thinking about why I came on this show and why I even auditioned in the first place and I'm brought back to those feelings," said Durbin. "It's for my family, and it's to try and give a voice to a genre of music that seems like it's really slowly fading away. I just really accomplished a lot on the show, and I'm just really grateful and thankful for the opportunities."

Like many fans who expected Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart to battle it our for a place in the Top 3, last night, James Durbin admitted that he too was shocked by his elimination.

'Something Pitchy:' Did James Durbin Get Daughtry'd?

by Hilary Rothing, posted May 13th 2011 1:31AM
After flipping a coin between Haley and Lauren, none of us were expecting America to let James Durbin go down in flames, tonight. But fame is a fickle...well, you know and James isn't the first late game finalist to get smacked in the face by fans' shifting loyalties. In fact, James may find the Adam Lambert comparisons lessening in favor of Chris Daughtry, whose Top 4 elimination earned him an entry in the 'Idol' lexicon.

Did James Durbin leave the competition too soon? Is Scotty McCreery the second coming of Taylor Hicks? Is there a snowball's chance in hell of an-all girl finale? Myself, Rickey Yaneza ( and MJ Santilli (MJ's Big Blog) tackle these questions and more in this post-Top 4 results show edition of AOL's 'American Idol' talk show, 'Something Pitchy!'

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

'American Idol' Top Three Revealed: Who Was Eliminated? (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 13th 2011 12:31AM
Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson, 'American Idol'Top Four has been an odd time in 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX) history. As Ryan Seacrest pointed out at the close of the performance episode, it was at this point in the competition that Chris Daughtry was eliminated back in Season 5.

Other fourth-place finishers include Tamyra Gray, Josh Gracin, LaToya London, Jason Castro and Allison Iraheta, so it doesn't mean the end of the road. Sure, only Daughtry came out of it with a monster career so far, but many of these people have been able to go on and make music their career in some way.

Girls were the first five eliminated, but since then Lauren and Haley have outlasted four guys in a row. Could they continue their streak and send Scotty or James home, or would the boys make a comeback. It's such a tight field this season, it was difficult to predict what might happen.

Jordin Sparks is All Grown Up As She Returns to the 'American Idol' Stage (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 12th 2011 11:20PM
Jordin Sparks, 'American Idol'When Jordin Sparks won 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX) back in its sixth season, she was 17 years old and the youngest ever winner. Now, at 21 years old, she returned to the stage that made her, as an adult.

She performed her new single 'I Am Woman,' and proved herself every bit of that with seductive moves and a strip tease out of a silver coat. When we saw it on her, while we thought she looked fabulous, we knew she was going to have trouble with those tight sleeves when she decided to lose it.

Nevertheless, she didn't lose her composure and eventually got down to her little black dress. Sparks was confident and commanding as she moved around the new 'Idol' stage, and even took a moment to sneak a quick kiss with Steven Tyler.

Did Haley Reinhart Come Back and Make Top Three on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 12th 2011 11:05PM
James Durbin, Scotty McCreery & Haley Reinhart, 'American Idol'Haley Reinhart had a rough night Wednesday night with the judges, and Randy Jackson in particular, on 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX). On the results show, you could see even more clearly how unrattled he'd left her after saying she was "screaming" Michael Jackson's 'Earth Song.'

She came out and redeemed herself in the judges' eyes with Ben E. King's 'I (Who Have Nothing),' but did their remarks hurt her chances with America?

Coming into this week, Reinhart had faced the Bottom Three on four separate occasions. Of the other finalists, only Lauren has been in the Bottom, and that was just last week.

'American Idol': Top 4 Elimination Results Show Recap

by Hilary Rothing, posted May 12th 2011 10:39PM
It was down to the Top 4, which meant no matter who went home tonight on 'American Idol,' there was going to be some drama and maybe even, a few tears. And once again, the vote for the final three did not disappoint, on that front.

Though it wasn't a Daughtry level coup, tonight's ousting was a bit unexpected, but we'll get to that in a moment. First, Steven Tyler, monkeys, elephants, Enrique Iglesias, Lady Gaga, Jordin Sparks, Windows 7 and more incentive to buy a Ford Focus.

Blake Lewis: 'J.Lo and Randy Were Unnecessarily Harsh With Haley Reinhart'

by Blake Lewis, posted May 12th 2011 1:00PM
The night started out nice. People usually arrive at my place around 8:30–9PM and we get the party started. This time my DVR box really didn't want us to watch 'Idol.' I was pissed! It kept glitching out every two seconds during some of the performances. Oh well! We set the computer on a stool and plugged it into my stereo system as a quick fix.

We only got to watch the performances and a couple of the Gaga critiques. Kind of interesting not hearing the judges;usually that's a contestant's dream when on stage, and I have to admit, it was nice not hearing them. On that note ...

The night's performances were pretty good. I thought Haley and James were the best out of the four. James started the night off strong with Journey, but I thought the performance was just all right. Pyro in the first song? The production is crazy on this show!

'Something Pitchy:' It's an 'American Idol' Therapy Session!

by Hilary Rothing, posted May 12th 2011 1:48AM
Sure, it's called 'American Idol' not 'Attitude Idol' but can anyone blame Haley Reinhart for giving it back to Randy and J.Lo after they not only slammed her for the umpteenth time, but also compared her to golden boy, James Durbin?

Myself, Rickey Yaneza ( and MJ Santilli ( are just as perplexed as Haley, herself. Only more puzzling is Randy's assessment of James Durbin, comparing his screamy Journey cover to an Olympic performance. Factor in the record number of Randy Jackson catchphrases repeated over the course of this evening's ninety-minute performance show and you'll begin to understand why this post Top 4 edition of 'Something Pitchy' felt more like group therapy than our usual lively discourse on 'American Idol!'

What did you guys think about tonight's performances? Talk back to us in the comments, we promise you won't get voted off for it!

'American Idol' Recap: Lady Gaga Mentors/Scares the Top 4

by Hilary Rothing, posted May 12th 2011 12:00AM
What do avant garde pop princess Lady Gaga and '60s doo-woppers The Coasters have in common? Nothing. But both were a part of tonight's Top 4 performances on 'American Idol.' So I guess there's that.

The final four took to the stage for another two-for-one special, this time choosing one personally inspiring song followed by a selection from mega-hit songwriting duo Leiber and Stoller's songbook.

James Durbin opened the show with Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin',' an '80s classic that's gotten a bit of a second wind thanks to 'Glee' and serial killer Aileen Wuornos, or rather the award-winning biopic about her, 'Monster.'

James Durbin Continues His Reign With 'Love Potion No. 9' on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 11th 2011 11:57PM
James Durbin, 'American Idol'James Durbin had a very smart night on 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX). First, he tackled Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin',' which was made famous again just a couple years ago as the signature song for the cast of 'Glee.'

Then, he brought his rocker vibe to 'Love Potion No. 9,' reinventing the song to suit his style perfectly. As usual, he brought a full stage production, with flames, smoke and a full band to his performances. It was a stark contrast to Scotty McCreery running around the empty stage on his second song of the night.

The judges talk all the time about the contestants needing to have a "moment" to connect with the audiences at home, but as they said tonight, James Durbin is having a moment each week. In some cases he's having two moments.

Haley Reinhart Stands Up for Herself Against Randy Jackson's Criticism on 'Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 11th 2011 11:49PM
Haley Reinhart, 'American Idol'With the theme around songs that inspire the Top 4, Haley Reinhart chose to sing Michael Jackson's 'Earth Song' for her first 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX) performance this week. It's not one of his more well-known songs stateside, but it meant something to her and she poured her emotion into the song.

Jennifer Lopez criticized her choice of song, saying it was a bad move this late in the game. Randy Jackson took the criticism a little further, saying the song was out of her range and she needed to put more into it vocally than she did.

Lady Gaga Proves a Bit Too Much for Scotty McCreery on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 11th 2011 11:40PM
Lady Gaga & Scotty McCreery, 'American Idol'Jimmy Iovine summed it up best on 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX) when he said, "Scotty McCreery. Lady Gaga. I couldn't think of a better fit."

The two are coming from such opposite ends of the spectrum, it was bound to be uncomfortable when they collided during Gaga's mentor stint this week. McCreery did a lot of awkward laughing, smiling and doing the best he could to look anywhere but directly at Gaga. Apparently, that's just too much for him to handle.

Gaga lost him with her advice as well, telling him to think of the microphone as his girlfriend. "Keep your mouth on that microphone like your life depends on it or that b**** gonna leave you."

'American Idol': Top 4 Song Picks for Leiber and Stoller Night

by Hilary Rothing, posted May 10th 2011 2:00PM
American Idol Top 4
Once again, 'American Idol' producers have decided the kids need to sing songs older than dirt to prove they have what it takes to become a marketable pop star in 2011. With all due respect to the enormous catalog of classic hits the great songwriting duo of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller built during their rule over the American musical landscape, can the Top 4 really bring something new to perennially covered classics like 'Hound Dog' and 'I'm a Woman'? Perhaps...

The fact is, if these kids can't do justice to some of the greatest pop songs ever written, how will they ever compete with current megastars like say, Lady Gaga, who just happens to be mentoring, this week? And who wouldn't like to hear a Gaga-produced version of 'Yakety Yak'?

While Gaga molds the Top 4 into little monsters all her own, we're picking the eight songs James, Scotty, Lauren and Haley should perform. Read on for our song picks for the Top 4!

'American Idol:' Jacob Lusk Says 'Man in the Mirror' Comments 'Sensationalized'

by Hilary Rothing, posted May 6th 2011 2:45PM
After repeated trips to the bottom three, the curtain finally closed on Jacob Lusk, last night. And as is tradition, the Compton, California native took to the phone to talk to the press on a conference call, this afternoon.

Asked about what led to his ousting, Lusk suggested he was a fish out of water during "Now and Then" night, this week on 'Idol.' Thus his elimination came as no surprise.

"I had expected it not because of my bottom three (visits) but because of the judges' feedback and my performance this week. I was the only one who was not in his element this week, everyone was in their element and I did songs that were not in my genre that weren't really my thing. I tried to do something different and this wasn't the time to do that."
