It's a show about advertising, so you sort of associate them with ads and commercials.

At least two 'Mad Men' actors, Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss, are featured in commercials circulating right now. Hamm is the new voice for Mercedes-Benz, taking the baton from Richard Thomas (John-Boy on 'The Waltons'), who served as the car company's voice-over talent for the past four years.

In a Media Decoder story, Stephen Cannon, vice-president for marketing at Mercedes-Benz USA in Montvale, N.J., calls the new campaign "a nice re-fresh of our voice," adding that Hamm has "a terrific, very resonant voice with a lot of gravitas to it." He also notes that Hamm will help Mercedes-Benz "reach out to a younger, more vibrant audience."

The NBA Playoffs are upon us, starting today on ABC and ESPN, and tomorrow night on TNT, and that means the networks are shifting into overdrive to present all the games, all the action, and -- especially -- all the stars to the viewing public. Shaq, Kobe, LeBron, Dwayne, Dirk, Rajon ... if you're a fan, you don't need the last names. That's how big the star power is for NBA elite players.

It's perhaps even bigger than the NFL or any other major league. And that's one reason why the NBA is not the number one sport in America, but it is the number one marketed sport. That's a point illustrated in the new promo for the TNT broadcasts featuring music and movie stars Jamie Foxx and Justin Timberlake extolling the virtues of the NBA playoffs.

The cable guy!

As I've mentioned here before, the Verizon commercials irritate me. FiOS is great, if you're still using cable TV you're practically a Luddite, yadda, yadda, yadda. But why does the FiOS guy have to be such an annoying jerk?

The cable (Comcast really, as we've now seen in the most recent ads) guy is always trying to talk to the FiOS guy about anything else and all Mr. FiOS can talk about is how great FiOS is, how much faster it is, how everyone loves it, how many J.D. Power awards it has won -- as if tech guy would have one of those in his apartment. While the Comcast guy is also trying to prove how good cable is, you get the feeling he's just trying to get by, not shove cable down everyone's throat.

Here's the latest ad. You tell me what's so irritating about it.

Tiger's never-ending reach for forgiveness and redemption has been more thoroughly covered than my late grandmother's living room couch. It's turned the news into a supermarket tabloid. It's turned 'SportsCenter' into a Lifetime made-for-TV movie.

And now, with Nike's new Tiger ad, it's turned commercials, my one measly break from this love-to-hate lovefest, into another creepy, lurid, sex-soaked look at a superstar's human indiscretions.

For instance, I constantly keep buying Nike basketball shoes, even though I know that they're too narrow for my clodhopper feet, because they just look so damned cool.

One of the things they've been able to do so well is put together compelling advertising. And, after the Tiger Woods mess spilled all over the media landscape, there was likely a large segment of those watchers who were wondering what Woods' largest sponsor would do to address the mess. Would they meet it head on or try to avoid the issue?

Well, the met it head on, and in the best way possible. Here is the new Nike ad with Woods, debuting during last night ahead of the Masters:
The judges on 'American Idol' drink out of huge Coke or Vitamin Water cups. The chefs on 'Top Chef' use Calphalon equipment, as all the logo close-ups tell us. The folks at the Buy More on 'Chuck' really love their Subway sandwiches.

We get it. It's the way of the TV world these days, as someone's got to the pay the freight in a world where you can zap a commercial by pushing a button.

But, when entire stories on shows play out like an ad for a product, then things have gone too far. Unfortunately, my favorite new show, 'Modern Family,' took things that step too far last night with their iPad-themed plot. It felt like one long Apple commercial. Never mind that the episode aired just in time for the device's release on Saturday; the iPad drove the plot rather than the plot necessitating the use of an iPad. And that's where the producers crossed the line.

First, congratulations on the awesome name for your organization. I think you might have just created a new show for CBS. 'CAI: Boston.' From the creators of CSI. A team of social do-gooders investigate corporations and try to stop evil advertising mascots from taking over the world. New this fall!
I picture Tim Daly and Jennifer Garner in the roles (if they're not available, maybe Dean Cain and Katee Sackhoff?).

Filed under: OpEd, Commercials, Reality-Free, Features

Late last week, I talked about how, even as a guy, I know that ads for women's hygiene products are silly. Now, I'm going to talk about an advertiser that hasn't been very fair to the fairer sex for decades: Folgers.

We've written about the supermarket coffee brand's saccharine-sweet advertising before. But one thing we haven't explored with their "playing to middle America" series of ads is how poorly women come off in most of them.

Take this ad that debuted late in 2009 and has been airing incessantly ever since:

At first, it looks like a sweet and kind of old-fashioned spot, with a well-meaning if slightly over-protective dad telling his little girl that her new fiance went to him for his blessing to take her hand in marriage. Just like everyone else, I took those health classes where the gym teachers struggled to explain our reproductive systems to us, so I have a good idea what happens when a woman's "time of the month" comes around.

So why do ads for maxi-pads and tampons always sugarcoat this process? That time of the month for most women seems to be one of great discomfort and, for some, downright pain. Then why do ads show women romping in fields, peacefully coexisting with nature while wearing white? And why do still other ads show how well their products worked by spilling blue liquid all over them?

Kotex was wondering the same thing. The ads for their new line of products agree that the old ads were pretty friggin' ridiculous. Here's one that makes fun of the "communing with nature" and "blue liquid" concepts:
He's even doing animated ads. Here's one for Priceline that features William Shatner fighting William Shatner.

Personally I think the live-action Priceline ads are funnier (live-action Shatner is funnier than cartoon voice Shatner - besides, the live action ads are cartoonish already), but the little comedy short that follows is amusing (probably because I love dogs).

It seems that every other company that had an ad during the game is being sued in one way or another. The latest defendants are Kia and CBS, who televised the game.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that the two companies (and a few others, including the NFL and the ad agency) are being sued by Drive-In Music Company, who says that the song used in the Kia ad (the one with Muno from 'Yo Gabba Gabba') is very similar to a song by Dyke and the Blazers that they own called "Let A Woman Be A Woman." This commercial is still being shown a lot.

After the jump, the two songs. You be the judge.

I mentioned it in my picks for the worst Super Bowl ads, and now CBS is actually apologizing for it (and that's not all).

The network is going to give Dockers three free commercials during the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament coming up this month. The Dockers ad ran first before another men-in-shorts commercial for CareerBuilder, so they're the ones that will get the free spots.

This is rather odd, and I wonder if it will set an unwanted precedent when it comes to what advertisers can expect/want. So what if the ads were similar in content? It's not like Dockers and CareerBuilder are Coke and Pepsi and they ran ads next to each other. Maybe CBS should give viewers something for free for having to endure the commercials. I'd like a 'Late Show' mug.
It's the jingle from old Big Red gum commercials. I think it was used in the '80s and maybe into the '90s, but it's funny to see it used for a completely different product.

After the jump, the original (yes, that's Peter Billingsley). It's funny how they didn't just grab the theme song they reproduced scenes from the original spot (though I bet a lot of people wouldn't even had remembered those scenes in the old ad without seeing it again).

Sure, we can all instantly recognize David Duchovny when he plugs dog food, but there are a lot of other celebrities doing ads and you probably don't even realize it as you're watching the commercials (if you still watch commercials and don't speed through them on DVR).
TV.com has a quiz to see if you can guess which voice is on various commercials (don't read the comments on that page because they give away some of the answers). They show you the commercials and then you type in the actual name of the person (no multiple choice with this quiz, sorry).

A few of the voices will be familiar to you right away while some of them are going to leave you scratching your head a bit. I only got six out of fifteen, though all of the voices sounded familiar to me. I'm really angry at myself for missing number three...

Last week we showed you how often ChromaKey/green screen is used on TV, and now here's a behind the scenes look at how that new Old Spice commercial was filmed (the one with the guy on the boat, then on the horse). Leo Laporte had two of the guys behind the ad on his TWIT web show recently. Surprisingly, it wasn't all done with special effects.

I laugh out loud every time I hear the guy say "I'm on a horse." So quick and deadpan and funny.

It shows a bunch of people in a bar who see a TV report that the world is ending. Some freak out, some decide to have sex. This takes the term "wing man" to a whole new level.

This ad is actually yelling at you. No, you're not high on drugs.

For some reason, the people behind Shoedini, the device that allows you to put on and take off your shoes without all that unnecessary bending and exercise, hired Gilbert Gottfried, a man who's voice could make babies cry BEFORE they are born.

WARNING: If you watch this ad, just like anytime you hear Gilbert's voice on TV or in a movie, it will follow you around in your head for the remainder of the day or narrate your most haunting dreams.
Still, having seen it a couple of time since, perhaps it should have been. Do you remember it? It's based on a game called punch dub, and every time a person sees a Volkswagen before the other person, they get to punch their partner and call out the color of the car.

I had some friends who played a car game like this, punching each other each time one saw a vehicle with one light not working. They called it pediddle. Ridiculous name, but then punch dub is just as silly. But it's real. And that's a big part of why this commercial is so good. You can relate to it. Everyone can play. There's the kid with his grandfather. The two Amish folk. The drunk guys in the limo.
