According to early Nielsen numbers, the 2011 Emmys were right on par with last year's NBC-produced telecast. TV By the Numbers reports that Sunday's 63rd Annual Emmy Awards garnered a 4.2 rating among adults 18-49, up from last year's 4.1. Although the total number of viewers was slightly down (12.4 million versus 13.5 million), it's still a pretty strong performance.

One thing to note: The 2010 ceremony was held earlier, which means that Sunday Night Football wasn't on yet to compete with the awards show. Last night, football grabbed a 9.2 adults 18-49 rating and 21.5 million viewers. But what would Fox's ratings have been like if the Emmys had been held at the end of August?

However, the moment was almost squashed by his 'Two and a Half Men' bosses.

According to Deadline, Chuck Lorre, 'Men' co-creator and executive producer, tried to get Sheen booted from the telecast.

Lorre reportedly approached John Shaffner, the chairman of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, about getting Sheen out of the telecast. Warner Bros. Television Group honcho Bruce Rosenblum made a call to Fox chairman Peter Rice trying to get Sheen's appearance cut.

Final ratings aren't in yet, but so far the 2011 Emmys have scored a thumbs up (with some reservations) from most critics.

'Glee' star Jane Lynch has been lauded for her hosting skills, and she kept things moving at a brisk pace on a night chock full of surprises. The Associated Press praised the high production values and said the ceremony "could have been the most satisfying in memory."

AOL TV's own Maureen Ryan called it "rather delightful," noting that "what's usually a three-hour slogfest passed by relatively quickly and mostly painlessly this time around."

'New York' magazine said that "if it wasn't as good as last year's Jimmy Fallon-hosted spectacular, it did continue a trend upheld by the recent Tonys and Grammys, of being much, much better than this past Oscars." High praise indeed!

Together with the Creative Arts Emmys, which were held last week, PBS scooped 14 Emmys in total, making it the most successful broadcast network. HBO was the top cable network, with 19.

'Downton Abbey' won the Emmy for Outstanding Made For Television Movie/Miniseries, in what creator Julian Fellowes called a David and Goliath story, "except in this case Goliath was wonderful, some wonderful shows that we were up against, and it seems perfectly extraordinary that we've won."

The Masterpiece drama was victorious in a strong field dominated by Emmy powerhouse HBO, which had three nominations -- 'Mildred Pierce,' 'Too Big to Fail' and 'Cinema Verité.'

Accepting his award from David Boreanaz and Anna Torv, Pearce joked that "I got to have sex with Kate Winslet many, many times."

As Winslet gave him two thumbs up from the audience he paid tribute to her, saying "I share this [award] with you. Thank you for letting me insert myself into your world of Mildred."

To gales of laughter from the audience he went on to thank his wife -- also named Kate -- "who had to listen to me talk about that every day."

This year, it felt like many of the "should wins" did win. It made for -- and I can't believe I'm saying this -- a rather delightful Emmy broadcast.

Sunday's Emmy broadcast rewarded so many truly deserving and excited winners from shows like 'Justified,' 'Friday Night Lights,' 'Game of Thrones' and 'Downton Abbey' that it's hard to find much to complain about.

There were a few repeat winners this year, but there was also a lot of fresh blood and well-deserved recognition. When I think back on the broadcast, I won't think about the occasional dead spots, I'll think about Melissa McCarthy's surprise win, Margo Martindale's tears for her 'Justified' Emmy and Kyle Chandler's stunned speech after he won for his great work on 'Friday Night Lights.'

This Emmy broadcast gave some lovely recognition to people who truly deserved it, and Jane Lynch wasn't a bad host, either. All in all, what's usually a three-hour slogfest passed by relatively quickly and mostly painlessly this time around (the most painful part was that In Memoriam section, but more on that later).

Already a SAG and Golden Globe winner for her role as Alicia Florrick, the wife of a disgraced politician who rejoins the workforce to support her kids, Margulies lost the Emmy in 2010 to Kyra Sedgwick.

This year, Margulies beat Kathy Bates, Mariska Hargitay, Connie Britton, Mireille Enos and Elisabeth Moss for the trophy.

This was Margulies' second Emmy win out of a total of eight nominations. She won for her role on 'ER' in 1994.
For the fourth year in a row, the AMC drama took home the Best Drama Emmy, and winning didn't appear to have gotten old for the show's ecstatic cast and producers.
Surrounded by dozens of producers, writers and cast members from the show, creator Matthew Weiner said, "Oh my goodness. I did not think that was going to happen."

The Andy Samberg-led musical trio had those three tunes nominated for Best Original Song, although they were beaten out by Justin Timberlake's 'SNL' monologue in an award handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys last week. But they were the ones who stole the show at the main event.

Michael Bolton, who was at one point dressed in full pirate regalia, joined Maya Rudolph, John Stamos, Ed Helms and Akon in the star-studded medley.

'Game of Thrones' picked up its first Emmy tonight after Dinklage won for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister.

Surprisingly, Dinklage took the time to thank his dog sitter -- as well as his wife Erica Schmidt.

"Wow, I followed Martin Scorsese," said a completely shocked Dinklage. "I couldn't do this without David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the producers, they were the first to call me and tell me about this part. HBO you're quite simply the best place to work for you; you let artists create."

Dinklage not only picks up his first Emmy, but he also takes home the golden statue for his work in a fantasy drama -- a genre that often gets overlooked by the academy.

Some of the big surprises of Emmy night were the wins for the final season of 'Friday Night Lights.' To say that fans of the NBC/DirecTV show had full hearts would be putting it far too mildly.

First executive producer and head writer Jason Katims won an Emmy in the best drama writing category, and gave a lovely, graceful speech that ended with "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose." Katims won for writing the show's series finale, 'Always,' which beat out 'Mad Men's' 'The Suitcase,' which was widely expected to win in that category.

Not long after that, a clearly stunned Kyle Chandler won as best dramatic actor. The man who played Coach Eric Taylor on 'FNL' for five seasons bested 'Mad Men's' Jon Hamm and 'Boardwalk Empire's' Steve Buscemi, among others.

But the other half is hearing your favorite stars of the small screen get emotional, veer off script and say stuff that's unexpected, or at least unscripted.

There were plenty of surprising twists and turns at the 63rd Emmy Awards, and more than a handful of remarks to remember. From host Jane Lynch's (jokingly) bitter comments about drowning her sorrows in a tub of turkey meatballs to Peter Dinklage's endearingly odd shout out to his dogsitter, the best quotes of the night are right here.
After starring in the hit comedy flick 'Bridesmaids,' the 'Mike & Molly' actress took home her first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series -- and it was definitely an Emmy moment to remember.

When presenters Sofia Vergara and Rob Lowe started to read out the names for the lead comedy actress nominees, they had no idea that the gang of funny ladies would rush the stage -- but that's exactly what they did.

Led by 'Parks and Recreation' star Amy Poehler, who ran up to the stage as her name was called, an equally determined McCarthy followed. Pretty soon, all of the leading funny ladies were on stage, clasping hands, in perfect beauty pageant formation.

The ABC comedy is four for four at tonight's awards.

Two-time nominee Julie Bowen took home her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, beating out costar Sofia Vergara, Emmy host Jane Lynch and golden girl Betty White.

Meanwhile, her on-screen husband Ty Burrell took home his first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, after losing out to co-star Eric Stonestreet last year. Burrell was competing against costars Stonestreet, Ed O'Neil and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, along with 'Glee' star Chris Colfer, in his category.

Unlike his character, Burrell seemed rather reflective accepting the golden statue, noting that his father passed away before he ever had the chance to see his son perform. "I wonder what he'd think of this," Burrell said, telling the crowd that his father would probably be surprised that his son goes to work in full makeup every day.

Though the show's writing has been uneven in recent seasons, there's no doubt Carell's performance -- especially in the episode 'Garage Sale,' where Scott proposed to longtime girlfriend Holly Flax -- was statuette-worthy.

Carell has been nominated for acting Emmys and Golden Globes for all six years he's played Michael Scott, but the only win he took for the character was in 2006, when he nabbed the Globe. The actor left 'The Office' this year, so it was his last chance to snag some Emmy love.
