Family Guy producer draws the line

by Julia Ward, posted Nov 22nd 2006 6:04PM
Family Guy Griffin FamilyFamily Guy's executive producer David Goodman wants to protect kids from watching Family Guy - specifically, his own kids.

While his son's friends are starting to watch the show, he refuses to let his own son hunker down with the Griffin clan. "I think children are growing up a little too fast and are exposed to things that they shouldn't be. I don't want to have to explain some of the things that are happening on the show. I don't like lying to my kids so I don't let them watch it...They have plenty of time to be adults and to understand all the sex jokes."

Family Guy: Prick Up Your Ears

by Brett Love, posted Nov 20th 2006 8:32AM
Family Guy, Stewie and Brian(S05E06) The story for this week's episode was more involved, which is a good thing. A little plot goes a long way. When the plot gets too thin everything rides on the gags, and it is hard to pull off an episode with just gags. While the sex-ed story has been told many times, I liked the Family Guy take on it.

It gave them a good reason to bring out slutty Lois, and slutty Lois is usually pretty funny, like when she was trying to explain the wonders of sex to Meg. Or showing up for role-playing night dressed as Grimace? Good stuff.

Family Guy: Whistle While Your Wife Works

by Brett Love, posted Nov 13th 2006 10:31AM
Family Guy(S05E05) I'm beginning to think of this as the Brian & Stewie show. Again this week, their story was much better than the Peter story. With Peter's injured hand, the setup was good, but it kind of headed downhill from there. The opening with Quagmire smuggling the fireworks into the country ("Yeah, that's just as fun."), Chris playing David Koresh and the heavy handed FBI agent, and Stewie ignoring Peter's missing fingers while asking for more juice was great. Finally something for Meg to do too.

Family Guy: Saving Private Brian

by Brett Love, posted Nov 6th 2006 10:35AM
Stewie - Family Guy(S05E04) The ARMY, awwwww yeah. Finally, baseball is over and it can quit interfering with our television programs. It's been so long since a new Family Guy that this almost felt like a season premiere. The wait was worth it though, as they delivered the best episode of the young fifth season.

That was probably due in part to giving Stewie and Brian a big adventure. I always prefer their stories to those involving Peter. It's tricky with Peter. I think less is more. When they use Peter extensively, he can be grating. Tonight was just right. The Full Metal Jacket/Stripes angle for Stewie and Brian was great, right down to the Stripes music during the obstacle course. And Louis Gossett Jr. as Sergeant Angryman is a nice bit of casting.

One person's top 10 Family Guy moments - VIDEO

by Joel Keller, posted Oct 24th 2006 3:32PM
Family Guy SpidermanIf you've got eight spare minutes and don't mind seeing cartoon nudity and hearing animated flatulence at work, then take a look at this video: someone has compiled what he or she thinks is Family Guy's ten funniest moments and clipped them together. It's kind of odd how some of the selections are maybe 15 seconds long, while others -- especially a clip featuring Quagmire -- seem to go on forever. But I think that's the nature of Family Guy: just when you think a gag should end, Seth MacFarlane purposely extends it to the point where it becomes funny again.

Anyway, I don't agree with all of this person's choices, but it's not a bad way to spend eight minutes. The video is after the jump.

Artists interpret Family Guy for art exhibit

by Adam Finley, posted Oct 12th 2006 11:03AM

lois griffinMark your calendars, Family Guy fans, and buy some plane tickets or get ready to barter with a hobo and ride the rails to California, because on November 8 the Museum of Television and Radio is featuring an exhibition of several artist interpretating the characters from Family Guy with their own unique vision. The exhibit is called "What the Deuce Are You Staring At!?!: A Collection of Interpretive Work Inspired By Family Guy." The art is described as "Pop Surrealist," so it could be really interesting. If you don't live in the Los Angeles area or can't make the trip, don't be too upset. After January 21, 2007 the exhibit goes on a global tour of animation galleries, so there's a chance it might end up somewhere near you. Otherwise, I suggest ingesting a lot of Benadryl and spinning around really fast while watching an episode of Family Guy. That should create some interesting visuals.

F-word unbleeped on Family Guy - VIDEO

by Joel Keller, posted Sep 25th 2006 4:47PM
Family Guy F-word sceneThis is interesting: seems like Seth MacFarlane and company snuck the phrase "so fucking funny" into last night's episode of Family Guy, and FOX didn't catch it until it was too late. As you can hear in the clip (courtesy of the fine folks at Cartoons for Grown-Ups), the word is said pretty clearly, in a cutaway scene where Brian wonders what kind of jerk drives a Hummer. I was watching the show last night, and didn't notice the F-word, so I guess the standards guys at my local station were on top of things. But, as IMDb reported, the word indeed went through in a few markets.

Like I said, see for yourself after the jump. It's worth it just to watch the scene, which is pretty funny even without the f-word.

Family Guy: Hell Comes to Quahog

by Brett Love, posted Sep 25th 2006 12:51PM
Family Guy Peter kills Yogi(S05E03) This is more like it. After two below average episodes to start the season, I thought this third installment of Family Guy was much better. The overall story of the mega-corp superstore coming to town and killing all the other businesses wasn't particularly novel. South Park did that a couple years ago in "Something Wall-Mart This Way Comes". It did serve as a good backdrop for some funny stuff though. And really, any time someone wants to put the boots to Wal-Mart, I'm ok with it.

Things started out on a good note with Red Dawn the musical and the who's that kind of drunk bit. I thought the roller skating montage was well done too. And they just kept coming. Pepperidge Farms remembers, the Ice Man's trail to the gay club, and Hummer guy were all good. "Yeah, Rumsfeld!"

Uncensored and NSFW Family Guy clip

by Adam Finley, posted Sep 20th 2006 3:33PM

family guyAnd when we say "NSFW," we really mean "NSFW." Family Guy fans undoubtedly remember the episode "Road to Rhode Island" in which Brian and Stewie travel across the country after Stewie misplaces their plane tickets. The B story for that episode involved Lois purchasing a marriage counseling video with a special "men only" section in which the instructor does a strip tease. In this clip found on Google Video, the instructor takes the strip tease a tad further than she did in the original episode. Rumors are abound as to where the clip came from: some claim it was done as a joke played on either Seth Green or Seth MacFarlane, others say it's included as a deleted scene on one of the DVDs. For some reason the only thing I could think about while watching the clip is that I haven't seen Fritz the Cat in a really long time. Weird.

Family Guy: Mother Tucker

by Brett Love, posted Sep 18th 2006 11:04AM
Family Guy - Veronica Mars(S05E02) And we're back, with what was, at best, an ok episode. Was it just me or did it seem like a lot of the cut away gags just didn't work this week? We open episode two at the air show with the citizens of Quahog anxiously hoping for a plane crash. When that doesn't happen, someone runs up and stabs the pilot, to cheers from the crowd. Then Quagmire appears in his plane, The French Tickler, and proceeds to crash through the crotch of Veronica Mars and Paris Hilton on billboards. He dodges the Greta Van Sustren billboard until he can crash through a Jack Daniels one first.

As they are leaving, they realize that Stewie is lost. After Peter goes through a dull lineup flashback we go to Brian searching for Stewie. He's stopped at the booth of the local morning zoo radio show. While I agree with the idea that most morning zoo shows are overproduced to the point of annoying, playing those overly long radio intros again and again wasn't funny. But they did set up for a later point. Anyway, while using the PA, Brian is discovered by the PD of the radio station.

Family Guy: Stewie Loves Lois (season premiere)

by Brett Love, posted Sep 11th 2006 7:19AM
Family Guy - Robin(S06E01) Family Guy is back, and it's like they never left. That could just be because of my penchant for watching adult swim every night before bed though. Anyway... the episode kicks off with a newscast. We find out that Quahog is suffering from a flu epidemic. After cutting to Trisha, who is puking in the toilet, they send it back to Robin Hood, Boy Wonder. And that kicks off our theme for the night, a series of retro gags. Robin arrives on the scene where a group of girls in a car are teetering on the edge of a cliff. Upon seeing Robin come to their rescue, they're unimpressed. There is a no cell service joke about him being useless, but I thought it would have been funnier if he kicked them over the edge.

Behind the scenes at Family Guy -- VIDEO

by Richard Keller, posted Jul 14th 2006 9:04AM

The many faces of Seth McFarlaneWhen it comes to animated series, I am always interested in looking behind the curtain to see how it all comes about. Particularly the voice talent, as many of these people (Seth McFarlane, Dan Castellaneta, Billy West) do a variety of voices for just one episode. Now, thanks to YouTube, we get to see a little bit of that behind the scenes material at the Family Guy studios.

The video features Seth McFarlane (Peter Griffin and Stewie, among others), Mila Kunis (Meg) and other company members as they do their lines for an episode of the series. What's interesting to see is how many times these voice actors go through their dialogue to get it right. What is also interesting is the fact that many of these actors perform their lines solo; I always pictured a lot of back and forth between the actors. Despite how many times the lines are read, and whether or not the readings are in a group or solo, the end result is fairly smooth when you watch the final episode on TV.

To see the video, check after the jump.

Family Guy gets shipwrecked in Toronto

by Richard Keller, posted Jul 10th 2006 8:43AM

Brian Fround of Swiss Family Guy RobinsonIf you happen to be in the Greater Toronto Area between now and July 15th you may want to stop by for a little taste of the Toronto Theatre Fringe Festival where, if you are fan of Family Guy, you'll definitely be in for a treat. That's because Peter, Lois and the rest of the family are appearing in a little play named Swiss Family Guy Robinson.

Well, they're not really appearing. I mean, that would be weird if they actually came out of your television screen to perform at the Royal St. George Theatre in Toronto. What I really meant is that they'll seem like they're right on the stage in this one man show performed by actor Brian Froud. In the play, which has been receiving rave reviews by the Toronto press, Froud spins the Griffins and their neighbors into the classic Swiss Family Robinson tale. Oh, I forgot to mention that he does spot-on voices of the entire Family Guy cast. All except Meg that is because, according to Froud, she's hard to do.

More information on Brian, as well as a sound clip of Swiss Family Guy Robinson, can be found at his website.

Seth MacFarlane speaks at Harvard

by Adam Finley, posted Jun 13th 2006 3:32PM

seth macfarlaneFamily Guy creator Seth MacFarlane spoke to Harvard's graduating class last Wednesday, but it wasn't part of commencement. Instead, it was for Class Day, which takes place the day before graduation ceremonies and was created to be a more relaxing send off for seniors than the "real" ceremony. MacFarlane addressed the crowd as several of the characters he plays on the show, including Stewie, Peter, and Quagmire. MacFarlane didn't attend Harvard, but he told the crowd he had been secretly living among them. Sounds like a pretty cool speech, but I'm not sure anything can top Conan O'Brien's address to the Class of 2000.
