Don't Laugh at Conan's Move to TBS... It's the Future

by Rich Keller, posted Apr 16th 2010 11:50AM
CoCo is with TBSA few days ago, Joel gave four reasons why Conan O'Brien made the right move to TBS. He mentioned, among other things, the control Conan will have over the new program and not having to fight for affiliates to air the program instead of 'Seinfeld' or 'The Simpsons.'

A fifth reason can also be added. A broader reason encompassing not just Conan's show, but the current talk shows that populate the cable horizon. You see, cable is the future of late night talk shows. I see you rolling your eyes and chuckling! However, I would hold off in calling me various versions of 'idiot' until you hear me out.

George Lopez Should Be "Loco" For Coco

by Danny Gallagher, posted Apr 15th 2010 10:00AM
George LopezTBS has offered Conan O'Brien a deal that's so sweet, you could pour it over pancakes.

No one, however, is closer to achieving a full-on joygasm than 'Lopez Tonight' host George Lopez. He should. He's going to have an awesome lead-in audience, worldwide attention, and a better chance of beating the late night bigwigs than he could ever hope for if he was on his own.

So why should he not go "muy loco" or any other ethnically charged verb for sharing a late night block with "Coco"?

Four Reasons Why Conan Will Thrive On TBS

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 13th 2010 2:37PM
Coco is with TBS promoIt goes without saying that when Conan O'Brien announced that he had signed with TBS to do a new late night show, mostly everyone who follows these things was shocked. TBS? Didn't they already have George Lopez at 11PM? What happened to Fox, FX and Comedy Central? Is anyone even going to see Conan on cable?

But it didn't take long to realize that going to TBS was the right move for Conan, especially after some of the details of the deal were revealed. In fact, the longer you look at it, the better the deal looks, for these four reasons.

1. Conan will own the show. This is a big one. TBS had no problem letting Conan own his show and just paying him a licensing fee to air it. Fox was never going to allow him to do that. And control was a big deal to Conan, according to The Daily Beast's Peter Lauria, especially after everything he went through with NBC and 'The Tonight Show.'

Conan Is Coming Back To TV... on TBS

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 12th 2010 1:15PM
ConanThe long wait is over. Right on the day that Conan O'Brien starts his cross-country tour in Oregon comes this rather large announcement: Conan is coming back to TV this November! But if you're thinking that he's going to do a late night show on FOX, you'd be mistaken. Instead, think "Very Funny."

Joe Adalian at TheWrap.com (and Conan himself on Twitter) confirm that he's going to do a late night show on TBS. This is rather interesting, because everyone assumed that FOX would be the place that Conan would want to go to because they're the last "big" network where he could have a late night show. CBS and NBC already have something and while ABC was sorta mentioned in the mix, they're happy with 'Nightline' and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live.'

Four Reasons Why Leno Got His Audience Back So Fast

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 9th 2010 5:02PM
Jay Leno on his first day back on 'The Tonight Show' on March 1, 2010We at TV Squad have been accused of having an bias against Jay Leno. That might be true; after all, our writers are free to post their opinions on any and all news stories, and my guess is that most of our staff are not big Leno fans (in fact, Bob has said many, many, many times how much he dislikes Jay).

But, one thing we've never denied is that the man can get an audience at 11:35. And, if anyone was fretting that Leno's audience wouldn't follow him back to 'The Tonight Show,' you needn't have worried.

According to Media Life Magazine (via TVWeek), Leno averaged 4.2 million viewers per night last week. Yes, that's one million viewers less than he had a year ago, but it's still a million more than Letterman, whose 'Late Show' has lost about 900,000 viewers since Leno came back. And Leno's pulling almost 1.5 million more viewers than Conan did.

So, why did most of the viewers come back so soon? Four reasons come to mind:
