The Black Donnellys: Run Like Hell

by JJ Hawkins, posted Mar 27th 2007 12:02PM

black donnellys(S01E05) Was it me or did Tommy Donnelly look borderline stalker crazy sitting across the street from Reilly's Diner Shop waiting for Jenny? If I didn't know his character better, I'd have been certain he was on the verge of assasinating her with a box.

Of course, we all understand two things. Tommy is madly in love with Jenny and Tommy has already crossed that fine line between being a good citizen and being a bad citizen.

This is why he was the absolute last person who needed to hear that Jenny's diner was in the midsts of a cash crisis because her dad can't tell the difference between a giant blue box that says U.S. Postal service and the night deposit drawer at his local bank. I wonder if he hails hot dog cart vendors when he needs a cab...idiot.

Laila Ali floats like a butterfly. Meredith Vieira does not.

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Mar 27th 2007 11:26AM
Laila Ali does a mean mambo on Dancing With The StarsThe more America watches Dancing With The Stars the more confirmation there is that athletes encompass infinite amounts of grace. At first glance, Laila Ali has a body meant to beat boxing competitors into a bloody pulp. Last night she also proved that she could knock people out with a mean mambo on last night's episode of Dancing With The Stars.

She floated effortlessly on the dance floor and made a mambo booty shake that caused an earthquake on the dance floor and took home the high score on last night's Dancing With the Stars. If you missed it, you can watch her shake it in this clip of TV's Top 5! moment.

However, some women are not so graceful...

What does it take to get banned from SNL?

by Joel Keller, posted Mar 27th 2007 11:04AM
Sinead O'Connor ripping up the pope's pictureApparently not much, according to this list on Wikipedia, which is part of a larger list of infamous SNL moments. Now, this being Wikipedia, it's hard to say if all the incidents listed are true; in fact, Wikipedia themselves have flagged the entry for not adequately citing sources. But, from what I've read about the history of the show, most of these incidents actually happened.

Anyway, the list carries the most infamous transgressions, like Sinead O'Connor's tearing of the Pope's picture, Martin Lawrence's raunchy monologue, and Elvis Costello playing "Radio Radio" when Lorne Michaels specifically told him not to. But, sometimes, all you have to do is go off script, as Adrien Brody and Charles Grodin found out, to garner a lifetime ban. Or just come unprepared, as Louise Lasser found out. Interestingly enough, Andrew Dice Clay isn't on the list, even though he did a monologue that was probably even more raunchy than Lawrence's. I think the Wikipedia readers just missed that one.

Why are athletes so much funnier than other SNL hosts?

by Joel Keller, posted Mar 26th 2007 4:03PM
Peyton Manning teaching kids on SNLAnnie's review of last Saturday's SNL pretty much encapsulated how I felt about it; it was above average, especially if you understood some of the jokes directed at guest host Peyton Manning. Since I'm a football fan, that was no problem; the NCAA sketch where the studio guys kept saying certain players "pulled a Peyton Manning" was funny to me because, until he won the Super Bowl last month, Peyton had a bit of a choker's reputation.

Anyway, the funniest bit of the entire episode was the phony United Way PSA, showing Manning "helping" a bunch of kids. Even watching it today on NBC.com, I couldn't help but laugh when Peyton not only checks the play at the line of scrimmage, like he does on every play he runs in the pros, but then he whips the ball at his receivers, whether they're ready or not. When he knocks them over, he calls them "losers;" he's so angry at one kid, he banishes the boy to a Port-O-Let so he can think about the error of his ways.

Sanjaya makes them cry on SNL

by Liz Finn-Arnold, posted Mar 26th 2007 1:02PM
Andy Samberg as SanjayaThe Sanjaya controversy continues to heat up. Seriously, that's all anyone is talking about in our comments. Love him or deeply despise him, Sanjaya is now a pop cultural phenomenon. This week, Saturday Night Live took to mocking Sanjaya's latest American Idol performance.

In SNL's sketch, Sanjaya, played by Andy Samberg, shows up in the middle of Weekend Update for a surprise appearance. Amy and Seth are heard reacting in the background (Seth: "Is he happy or scared?" Amy: "He's terrible"). A shot of the audience reveals the infamous "crying girl", a weepy Fred Armisen, and a famous SNL alum also brought to tears by Sanjaya.

Tears of joy or tears of disgust? Sanjaya inspires them all. You can view the clip at TV's Top 5 (AOL TV) or on YouTube.

Miss USA takes it off ... should we crown Sanjaya?

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Mar 26th 2007 11:31AM
Tara Conner takes off her crown. Tara Conner you have made yourself quite a presence as Miss USA in the last year. If any of us in the television world had forgotten, you were the tinder that caused the fire between your maker Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell.

It wouldn't have been a reign without having an opportunity to watch you take it off. The crown that is.

In a highly orchestrated voice over, written by a devoted Trump employee, you gave us a small reminder that the Miss USA competition is tantamount to mob rule, where the boss is truly boss...

Saturday Night Live: Peyton Manning/Carrie Underwood - VIDEOS

by Annie Wu, posted Mar 25th 2007 12:32PM
Peyton and Carrie(S32E16) I know nothing about football. I know nothing about Peyton Manning. He's an athlete, right? Okay. I didn't expect much from him, since the majority of sports-related guests of the past have done poorly. To my surprise, Peyton did relatively well. I think this was partially due to the fact that the writing did not demand too much from him. Although this was a smart move to not make Peyton look like an idiot, it resulted in a mediocre episode.

George Michael's Sports Machine shuts down

by Richard Keller, posted Mar 24th 2007 12:32PM

George Michael's Sports MachineCome on, admit it, you've watched George Michael's Sports Machine once or twice before. It's practically the only original programming on Sunday nights at 11:30 p.m. That, and the fact that its been on the air for 27 years. So, somewhere along the line you caught George pressing the buttons to start the reel-to-reel videotape player that showed highlights of both major and minor sporting events.

That era is now coming to an end as Michael has decided to pull the plug on the show. This Sunday will be its last broadcast. According to an article in USA Today Michael decided to end the program after NBC, who distributes Sports Machine and owns the Washington D.C. affiliate where George was a sportscaster since 1980, requested drastic staff cuts due to budgetary issues. Michael told executives that he would need to be the first person let go, and he was. Despite this, the parting between Michael and the network was amicable.

This isn't the end of sportscasting for George however. This former record promoter and DJ (who could be heard on AM powerhouses WFIL and WABC in the 60's and 70's) has been asked to call four NASCAR races on DirectTV this summer with Fox sports analyst Darrell Waltrip.

NBC, Disney add social aspects to web sites

by Brad Linder, posted Mar 23rd 2007 1:25PM
WildfireNBC and Disney's ABC Family Channel have put out dueling press releases announcing that they'll be adding social aspects to their websites. Disney plans to test a new "watch and chat" feature that will let viewers watch video on the ABC Family Channel website while chatting with other viewers.

On Monday night, users will be able to watch the season finale of Wildfire about an hour after the program broadcasts on the ABC Family Channel. Up to 10 people can share a chat room and write about the show as it's being watched. Members of the chat room can pause, rewind, and fast-forward the video.

NBC is taking another path to the to the social web experience, by letting users create profiles, find friends who like the same shows, upload photos and videos etc. We're going to assume they won't look to kindly on users who upload copyrighted video content.

Jenna Fischer poses nude for Wired

by Anna Johns, posted Mar 23rd 2007 8:29AM
jenna fischerMove that Caprica Six poster on your cubicle wall and make room for the new Queen of the Geeks. The Office actress Jenna Fischer appears naked on the cover of the April 2007 issue of Wired magazine. The magazine comes with a clear cover that makes her look like she's dressed in a suit, but you pull it back and see she's naked (naughty parts hidden tastefully behind a white sign she's holding). You can see it and other photos here.

Why is she naked? In case you actually care, it goes with a feature article about "radical transparency", which is a new trend of companies going public with upcoming projects, etc. The title of the article is "Get Naked and Rule the World".

By the way, this isn't the first time Jenna has had a revealing photo shoot. She also showed off her ass in Jane magazine last July. I imagine her Office co-stars are going to give her hell for this. (Remember how they responded to her Esquire article?)

Here's the scenario: We all knew that the Scrubs crew was going to kill off one of its long-running cast members. They tried to fake us out by making Jordan bed-ridden after pre-natal surgery, but we weren't fooled (I mean, even Bill Lawrence doesn't have the balls to kill of his own wife).
