by Catherine Lawson, posted Dec 8th 2011 7:30AM
Ralph Fiennes, 'Daily Show'Last night classically trained actor Ralph Fiennes -- a.k.a. Lord Voldemort in the 'Harry Potter' movies -- stopped by 'The Daily Show' (Weeknights., 11PM ET on Comedy Central) and, frankly, things got a little weird.

Host Jon Stewart asked Fiennes for his opinion on who would win in the unlikely event that former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain went up against Voldemort: "If they were in a sword fight, in your mind, who would be the victor?"

Fiennes pondered this briefly before saucily quipping, "Depends on the length of the wand."

'MythBusters' Apologize for Cannonball Accident

by Catherine Lawson, posted Dec 8th 2011 5:45AM
'Mythbusters' cannonball accidentYesterday came news that the 'MythBusters' team had accidentally fired a 30-lbs cannonball through a house. Although on the face of it, it seemed like a pretty funny story, more details have since emerged that show how lucky local residents were to escape injury.

According to 'The San Francisco Chronicle,'
the cannonball travelled straight through the Shetty family's house, exiting through the exterior wall of the master bedroom as mom Seema was napping in the room with her two year-old son. After traveling a total of 3,300 feet, the cannonball eventually came to rest in Satwinder Gill's minivan. She told ABC-7 News that "my husband and son were in the car five minutes before it happened."

'MythBusters' hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage -- who were not present when the accident happened -- travelled to Dublin, California to meet with the families affected by the accident and to apologize. Savage told 'The San Francisco Chronicle,' "It's a wake-up call. Honestly, the feeling of embarrassment is not something we're indulging in right now. We feel for the families and the people affected by this."

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 8th 2011 5:00AM
Trace Adkins, 'The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson'Maybe it's because Trace Adkins is surrounded by women in his household, but he was a little brutal toward Craig Ferguson's boys on 'The Late Late Show' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET on CBS). Upon seeing a picture of them he said, "That's some ugly young'uns."

He turned it around to Ferguson, though, saying that they looked just like their father. "I'll be sure to pass on your opinion to my wife," Ferguson said.

Adkins then admitted that it took until his second grandchild to get a boy in the house. He has five daughters ranging in age from 26 to 7. "He's completely worthless," Adkins said of his grandson. "He doesn't help me at all ... He needs to step it up."

Jaime Pressly, 'Chelsea Lately'Jaime Pressly talked about her passion for MMA (mixed martial arts) on 'Chelsea Lately' (Weeknights, 11PM ET on E!). After a childhood in which she was heavily into boxing, Pressly said that as the years passed "boxing kind of got a little boring."

Enter the UFC. "You got to be able to box, jiu-jitsu," she said excitedly. "It's wrestling, it's on the ground."

But don't look for Pressly to train up to get into the ring any time soon. When Handler asked her if she'd ever been in a fight with a girl, Pressly admitted that she had, but dismissed it. "Yeah, but when I was 17," she said. For now, at least, she'll stick to acting.

Tom Dreesen on the Perils of Trying to Keep Up With Frank Sinatra (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 8th 2011 4:00AM
Tom Dreeson talks Frank Sinatra, 'Late Show with David Letterman'Tom Dreesen was a groundbreaking comedian in the late 1960s, and wound up as the opening act for Frank Sinatra in later decades. It was an exciting life, but not always an easy one, as he explained on 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS).

The biggest challenge for Dreesen, and in fact Sinatra's entire entourage, was the hours Ol' Blue Eyes kept. "Even when we were off the road, he never went to bed until dawn," Dreesen said. "Off the road or on the road, six o'clock in the morning he wanted you to hang with him."

After a particularly grueling cross-country trek, Dreesen finally had had enough for one night, and decided to go to bed. When Sinatra asked him why, he responded, "I got to get up early in the morning and go to the cemetery and visit those guys."

'Modern Family': Express Christmas Is a Near Total Disaster (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 8th 2011 2:30AM
'Modern Family' - 'Express Christmas'Things might not have gone according to plan with Phil's "Express Christmas" plan on 'Modern Family' (Wed., 9PM ET on ABC), but there were plenty of laughs along the way. Plus, as the clan was separated to tackle different holiday-related tasks as fast as possible, it was surprising to see Hayley emerge as the most savvy and competent one.

Her tactic of pretending to work for Target to secure an item someone else had already picked up was sheer genius. For everyone else, though, it was one mishap after another until finally they had to call it. This just wasn't going to happen.

Only Jay had one final trick up his sleeve. When he invited everyone out to Chinese instead, they opened the door to a guy blowing snow all over the front lawn. Sure, they were poolside earlier that day, but by the end it was a little piece of Christmas for the whole family.

Oprah Winfrey Stops by 'Dr. Oz' to Show What She's Been Up To (VIDEO)

Oprah Winfrey, 'The Dr. Oz Show'Oprah Winfrey stopped by the 'The Dr. Oz Show' (Weekdays, Syndicated) show to update her fans on what she's been up to since 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' went off the air. After 25 years "in the chairs," as she described it, Winfrey is excited to be getting up and "going out into the world just talking to people who I felt were interesting."

This includes film luminaries like George Lucas at his ranch, as well as a group of Hasidic Jews who'd never heard of her before agreeing to do her program. Clearly, the freedom that's been allowed her with the OWN network has opened Winfrey's mind to the possibilities of what she can explore.

Your Burning 'Revenge' Questions Answered by Creator Mike Kelley

by Maureen Ryan, posted Dec 7th 2011 11:00PM
Mike Kelley truly understood that his show was a hit when people began arguing about it at a Los Angeles hair salon.

All Kelley wanted was a trim, but when he mentioned that he created 'Revenge,' his stylist began raving about how he loved the high-end fashion on the show, which was his favorite new soap opera. Another customer corrected the stylist and said that the show was really a murder mystery. A third salon patron chimed in with yet another interpretation of the show.

"If you've hit the salon in L.A., you've become a success," Kelley said with a laugh. But the spontaneous debate about the show, which has been a breakout hit for ABC, made him realize "that people can get whatever they want out of this show," whether that's schadenfreude regarding the wealthy, a soapy slice of escapism or a well-paced serial drama with a clue-laden mythology.

For those who have already become addicted to "Revenge," Kelley promised lots of exciting new developments in 2012: At least three new characters, including a love interest for Victoria (Madeleine Stowe), will arrive in the second half of the season, which will also reveal who died on the beach at the engagement party in the series premiere.

by Maureen Ryan, posted Dec 7th 2011 11:45AM
There's lots of TV to discuss before the cable and broadcast networks begin their holiday-season hibernation periods, and Ryan McGee and I tried to get to as much of it as we could in this week's Talking TV with Ryan and Ryan podcasts.

First up, we devote more than 30 minutes to the 'Sons of Anarchy' Season 4 finale, which I also wrote about here. In the second podcast, we briefly discussed several projects debuting this week and then talked in more depth about 'Revenge' (expect more on that topic late Wednesday, which is when I'll publish an interview with creator Mike Kelley), 'State of Play' (a truly great 2003 British miniseries that BBC America is re-airing starting Wednesday; read more about it here), and 'Homeland,' a very good Showtime program that is heading into the home stretch of its first season.

Running times are below.
