I want Samantha Brown's job

by Anna Johns, posted Aug 15th 2006 1:46PM
samantha brownVacation homes? Luxury hotels? Hawaii? Europe? Yes, please!

I'm absolutely convinced that the Travel Channel's Samantha Brown has the best job on the planet. Years ago, I used to get a kick out of her Vacation Homes show where she would tour small and large vacation homes and joke (nicely) about the decorations and the locale. Lately, she's appearing in the Passport to Europe series. This morning, I watched as she munched on a fresh waffle and toured a comic book museum in Brussels, Belgium. I think what I like best about Samantha is her accessibility. She seems like a swell gal with a wry sense of humor and a lot of energy. She seems to vacation the way 'normal' people would vacation.

Who do you think has the best job in television?

Joe Buck named host of Fox NFL pre-game show

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 14th 2006 6:09PM
Joe BuckWhen James Brown (no, not the "Sex Machine" James Brown... the other one) left Fox to become the new host of The NFL Today at CBS, Fox kept everyone in the dark about who was going to take his place as host of Fox NFL Sunday. They even made the mystery into an ad campaign. But the mystery is over: the network has named lead play-by-play man Joe Buck as the host of the pre-game show. Because Buck is still going to broadcast the games, though, the show will be on the road the entire year, originating from the stadium where Buck is supposed to be working that week. Curt Menefee will host the halftime and post-game shows.

Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News, who reported on the unconfirmed rumors yesterday, felt that Fox was making too safe of a move with Buck. According to Raissman, it was a perfect opportunity for Fox to develop someone new in the host role, someone who can evolve as he tries to corral Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, and Jimmy Johnson. I'm not quite sure about that argument; after all, for every Bob Costas that gets a chance to shine in the studio, there's two Brent Musburgers that make us want to throw things at the screen. Those aren't good odds, as far as I'm concerned.

Kornheiser freaked out about Monday Night Football

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 14th 2006 4:09PM

Tony KornheiserThe ESPN sports show host (and subject of that lame Jason Alexander sitcom from a couple of years ago, Listen Up) makes his debut tonight on Monday Night Football, a preseason game between the Raiders and the Vikings, and he's a little worried about it. As he says in a not-so-subtle way in this New York Times piece, "I'm going to bomb."

Maybe this is just a way of lowering expectations. He's not going to bomb or be terrible. I mean, Tony, it can't be any worse than Listen Up, can it?

CBS Paramount signs deal with Laguna Beach producers

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 14th 2006 3:26PM
Laguna BeachFor all you readers out there who are poring over their pilot scripts, thinking that you're going to be the next Larry David or Aaron Sorkin, let me let you in on a little secret: put some hot and not-very-deep girls in bikinis, have them kiss a lot of guys on the beach, and you're on your way to television riches. Just ask David Hasselhoff.

Alternately, you can just ask the husband and wife team of Gary and Julie Auerbach, creators of MTV's hit "reality" series Laguna Beach. According to Variety (registration required to see the entire article), they have signed a deal with CBS Paramount Networks to develop scripted comedies and dramas for the company. Apparently the company's president and vice president are big fans of Laguna, and like the fact that the reality series is being presented with the narrative arcs usually seen in scripted shows. They want a little of the reality element brought to scripted shows, and they feel the Auerbachs are the best people to do that.

My theory as to why they got the deal? See the first paragraph. Boobs. Gossip. Sand. Beach. It doesn't take a programming genius to see the money making potential here.

How not to write a television script

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 13th 2006 1:30PM

NewsradioThere's always something great to read at Ken Levine's blog, and this past week was no exception. He has a really funny (and really useful) list of situations and scenes that aspiring writers should never include in their TV scripts. My favorite:

Don't hinge your show on stunt casting. I read a "Becker" where former President Jimmy Carter came in for a check-up and offered dating advice. Yeah, President Carter gets his physicals in the Bronx. And yeah, President Carter is always available to guest on a sitcom and advise a character to say whatever is necessary to get laid.

Of course, we've all seen even worse things actually make it on the air, but this is a great list.

Ed Begley Jr. takes the dean job on Veronica Mars

by Keith McDuffee, posted Aug 13th 2006 9:58AM
ed begley jr.Alright, I stand corrected -- there now may be hope for me to find the dean of Hearst College more than mildly interesting. Fellow Mars fanatic Michael Ausiello of TV Guide has landed some juicy details about who's taken the role, now that Michael McKean has had to turn it down -- none other than fellow improv-erific Ed Begley Jr.. Begley's appeared in A Mighty Wind, just as McKean has, though you've no doubt known him for his roles in Arrested Development, St. Elsewhere, and too many more to mention. OK, I feel better now.

[Thanks Karen M. O'Shea for the tip!]

How Meredith Vieira got the Today job... on her own terms

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 12th 2006 6:46PM
Meredith VieiraTomorrow's edition of The New York Times Magazine has an interesting profile of Meredith Vieira, who's about a month away from taking the Today anchor chair vacated by Katie Couric. In the article, written by Lisa Belkin, we get a picture of Vieira that isn't far off from what she showed on The View for nine years; a little goofy, dedicated to her work, but very family-oriented. That devotion to her husband, suffering from multiple sclerosis, and her three children is most of the reason why she left 60 Minutes fifteen years ago and turned down every high-profile news gig since. The article also goes into what made her change her mind when NBC came calling earlier this year.

But what I find the most intriguing part of the article is how inquisitive she is with some fellow pet store customers (she was buying a scratching post for her new kittens). It's the same inquisitiveness and curiosity that I see every time I watch her on Millionaire. For that reason, and the fact that she's going to let things fly that Katie never would, I'm really looking forward to seeing her with Matt, Ann, and Al this fall.

Anderson Cooper for President?

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 12th 2006 10:43AM

Anderson Cooper for PrezYou've probably seen the "Jon Stewart in 2008" posters on the web. Now comes this poster on the right. CNN anchor Anderson Cooper for President, from The Poster List (there are a lot of other cool posters on that site too).

Now who can Anderson get to be his running mate? Katie Couric? Bill O'Reilly? Nah, I doubt they'd see eye to eye on most things. Maybe Stewart can run for President and Cooper can be VP?

Tucker Carlson on Dancing with the Stars!

by Annie Wu, posted Aug 12th 2006 9:08AM
Tucker CarlsonFishbowlDC reports that MSNBC's Tucker Carlson is to participate in the upcoming season of Dancing With The Stars.

... Let me give you a second to process that.

Alright, I originally had no intention on watching this program -- didn't even bother with the first two seasons -- but now, my morbid fascination has compelled me to tune in. Will Tucker sport a bowtie? What if he ends up being a really hot dancer? Will he and Paul Begala re-unite as surprise dance partners? You got me good, ABC. You got me real good.

Gosh. I really can't believe this. It's like Carlson wants Jon Stewart to make fun of him now. Wasn't the infamous Crossfire throw-down enough? I'm going to have to hear the official announcements on Monday's Good Morning America before this really sinks in.
