New TV on DVD Releases This Week

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 8th 2010 6:00PM
Scarecrow and Mrs. KingHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

This week is an 80s extravaganza, as we have the first season of 'Matt Houston,' the first season of 'Scarecrow and Mrs. King,' a 'Wiseguy' collector's edition, and even a 'Tenspeed and Brownshoe' complete series set.

For those who have never heard of the latter, it was a comedic private eye show starring Ben Vereen. I remember the reviews for the show were outrageous, but for some reason, the show was very short-lived (which is why we're getting a complete series set).

I'm very, very tempted to get 'Matt Houston' and 'Scarecrow and Mrs. King,' though I don't know if they will hold up today. I'm guessing that 'Scarecrow' will hold up better than the Lee Horsley show.

  • 'Charlie & Lola' - Vol. 10
  • 'The Commish' - Season 1
  • 'Greek' - Chapter 4
  • 'Hannah Montana' - Vol. 6: Miley Says Goodbye
  • 'In Plain Sight' - Season 2

'A-Team' Complete Series DVD Will Be Shaped as the 'A-Team' Van

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 2nd 2010 9:30PM
The 'A*Team' Complete Series DVD box setDid you ever want to own the 'A-Team' van but the missus wouldn't let you blow Junior's college fund on a GMC van, the fancy paint job or the ton of golden neck jewelry? This may be the closest you'll ever get.

Universal Home Entertainment will release the entire series run on DVD on June 8th, just a few days before the big screen remake from director Joe Carnahan hits the screens.

Just look at it! It's the shape of the freakin' 'A-Team' van, quite possibly the coolest van in the history of vans. If Universal would be willing to sell just the box, I would gladly buy it just so I can store my bootleg 'Spaced' DVDs in it.

Entire 'Larry Sanders Show' Coming to DVD

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 2nd 2010 8:30PM
'The Larry Sanders Show Complete First Season' DVDIt always seemed strange to me that the first season of HBO's 'The Larry Sanders Show' is the only season to get a full DVD release.

Sure the first season DVD didn't have the best quality and the "Not Just the Best of" box set released some of the show's better episodes, but every episode deserves to be watched, shared and re-watched until the veneer of the DVD is worn away into dust.

Shout! Factory will correct this travesty of home entertainment by releasing a complete box set of the Garry Shandling series.

'Elvis' - DVD Review

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 2nd 2010 3:03PM
The cover of the Elvis Movie DVDMy eyes didn't see this movie when it came out since they weren't even a fully functioning organism until a year after it hits the airwaves. But my brain carries a fleeting memory of a syndicated run of John Carpenter's TV movie about the King of Rock 'n Roll.

I only saw one brief scene, but I remember thinking that this must have been a theatrically released movie because it felt like one. Back in the 80's, it was hard not to be able to tell the difference between a melodramatic TV mini-series and an honest and bracing biopic even if my TV diet consisted mostly of 'The Real Ghostbusters' and game shows that forced kids to dive in slop for a trip to Universal Studios.

Now almost fifteen years after that brief moment and more than 30 years after the TV movie told the life story of the King just a few years after his untimely passing, 'Elvis' returns to a TV near you in the form of a new DVD.

New TV on DVD Releases This Week

AliceHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

I wonder how many people are going to go to pick up 'Alice,' hoping to settle in to some great 70s comedy featuring grumpy bosses and the kissing of grits, and then they put the DVD in and discover the other 'Alice.' Of course, that's not going to happen because people don't buy DVDs without looking at the cover (I hope), but I can imagine a few people looking at the listing below and thinking of the Linda Lavin show before the SyFy miniseries.

  • 'Alice' - Miniseries
  • 'Designing Women' - Season 3
  • 'Doctor Who' - Dalek War and Remembrance of the Daleks: Special Edition
  • 'Have Gun Will Travel' - Season 4, Vol. 1

'Max Headroom' Coming to DVD

by Mike Moody, posted Mar 1st 2010 3:02PM
max headroom dvdThe '80s resurgence continues with the pending DVD release of 'Max Headroom', one of the most ambitious and baffling sci-fi shows to ever hit the small screen.

Too young to remember Matt Frewer's babbling blonde digital hipster? Allow me to play professor: In the mid-'80s, Frewer (you know, that guy) played a strange, spastic (and sarcastic) computer-animated Coca Cola pitchman and music video host that lived inside of your TV. He frightened young children and hypnotized susceptible nerds into guzzling Coke by the gallon.

Perhaps as a meta-comment on his own existence, his creators produced an insane cyberpunk TV movie starring Max that satirized TV marketing, the media, politics, and everything else worth satirizing.

Jane After Dark: 'Supernatural' - What Does Dean Know?

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 27th 2010 6:00PM
Supernatural - Sam and Dean WinchesterHey, 'Supernatural' fans. Well, I'm part-way into season two, and I have to say, I was utterly depressed after watching the first episode, 'In My Time of Dying.' But of course, I forged ahead anyway. It seems there's always a way to bring people back after they die on this show. Things aren't set in stone at all.

Which is exactly why it's hard to think that Sam could go to the dark side, or that he's harboring some deep, dark demonic thing. According to Gordon, that dark side is going to come out and be a really bad guy. Apparently, John Winchester felt that way, too, before he died. That's why he told Dean that if he couldn't save Sam, he'd have to kill him.

Judge Won't Block 'Jersey Shore' DVD Release for Assault Victim

by Danny Gallagher, posted Feb 26th 2010 9:00AM
Jersey ShoreIf you are waiting with nervous anticipation for the release of the first season of MTV's 'Jersey Shore,' first, please seek immediate help.

Then get your most ab revealing shirt cleaned and pressed and get ready to camp out in front of your neighborhood Best Buy because a judge has denied a request to block the show from being released on DVD.

The request came from Stephen Izzo Jr. who claims he was one of the many innocent people beaten up on camera by a member of the 'Jersey Shore' cast. I don't understand why this case is so hard to prove. Wouldn't it harder for you to prove that the cast of 'Jersey Shore' had not beaten you up?

Jane After Dark: 'Supernatural' is Approaching 'Buffy' Territory

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 21st 2010 11:03AM
Jane After Dark, Supernatural
Even though some episodes still scare the crap out of me, I'm really getting into 'Supernatural.' I know this because it's tough trying to do other work while I'm watching it at night. Impossible, really. Instead, I use it as my own little incentive program -- edit this post, watch five minutes of 'Supernatural,' write up that review, watch five minutes of 'Supernatural.' Cubicle workers have bonuses and rewards programs, I have 'Supernatural.'

Barnaby JonesHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

Wow, 'Barnaby Jones!' I'll admit I watched all of the detective shows in the 70s: 'Barnaby Jones,' "Streets of San Francisco,' 'Cannon' (also released this week). It's hard to say if I'll actually buy the set, though I haven't seen the show in 20 years (it's probably not even on TV anymore, unless one of the mystery channels runs it), and I'm curious to see if I still like it or if I laugh at Buddy Ebsen as a private eye, drinking milk and putting clues in little plastic baggies.

  • 'Barnaby Jones' - Season 1
  • 'Bleach' - Season 4, Part 2 Uncut Box Set: The Bount
  • 'Branded' - Complete Series
  • 'Bugs Bunny' - Easter Funnies

Jane After Dark: I Believe in the Power of 'Supernatural'

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 13th 2010 10:00AM
Supernatural - Jane After Dark
'Supernatural' is one of those shows I've been hearing about since it first premiered in 2005. I was never a fan of shows with demons and ghosts and the like until I finally watched 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer.' Now I'm sort of hooked on them.

I'm not gonna lie, though. I'm just a few episodes into 'Supernatural,' and so far, it's terrifying. It could be a good long while before I'm able to swim in a lake ('Dead in the Water'), go camping ('Wendigo'), fly on a plane ('Phantom Traveler'), or look in a mirror ('Bloody Mary'). And I'm convinced that my husband is probably a shape-shifter ('Skin').

Stargate SGUHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

'Studio One' is one of those shows I wasn't sure they'd ever release on DVD. Sure, it's an important, classic shows, but I wondered if they'd bother releasing them and if some of the tapes were erased or in horrible condition. There was a big 'Studio One' set released last year, and this week we have 'Twelve Angry Men' and the Rod Serling dramas in separate sets. Really great stuff, and well worth getting if you're into TV history.

Or you could buy season one of 'Gary Unmarried.'

  • 'Army Wives' - Season 3
  • 'Fraggle Rock' - Wembley's Egg Surprise
  • 'Gary Unmarried' - Season 1
  • 'The Guild' - Season 3
  • 'JAG' - The Final Season

BBC America 'Best of David Tennant' Video

by Nick Zaino, posted Feb 2nd 2010 11:15PM
David Tenant as Doctor WhoFor those of you still crying in your screwdrivers over David Tennant's exit from 'Doctor Who,' and waiting for Matt Smith to fill the void, BBC America has posted a three-minute video of "Tennant's greatest moments as the Doctor" to promote 'Doctor Who: The Complete Specials,' which is out today.

The clip takes us from "new teeth, that's weird" all the way up to the Master's death, with a good number of clips from the specials in between. And of course, Daleks and Cybermen. There are some nice reminders of how good Tennant was at playing both drama and comedy on the show, including his back and fourth with Sky Silvestry ("Shamble bobble dibble dooble") from 'Midnight' from series four and his exchange with a would-be companion from 'Planet of the Dead' ("People have traveled with me and I've lost them, lost them all").

New TV on DVD Releases This Week

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 1st 2010 6:03PM
The Price Is Right logoHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

It's not every week that you see four different DVD sets for game shows released, but that's what we have this week: "Best Of" sets for 'The Price is Right', 'Password', and 'Match Game '73', as well as a special set for the Richard Dawson 'Family Feud' episodes. I actually might buy the first three (not really a big 'Family Feud' guy). Having DVDs for classic episodes of those three game shows might be fun.

I'd like to see someone come out with a sampler DVD set of short-lived game shows or even well-known game shows that will never get their own full sets.

  • 'Batman: The Brave and the Bold' - Vol. 3
  • 'Beverly Hills, 90210' - Season 9
  • 'Doctor Who' - The End of Time, The Waters of Mars, and The Complete Specials
  • 'Dynasty' - Season 4, Vol. 2
