Wise-cracking recovered alcoholic Lennie Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) was as compassionate as he was tough. Toward the end of his NYPD career, he may not have been able to run as fast as his partner, but he could still smell a rat a mile away. The man had seen and done it all, and he was always willing to admit when he'd made a mistake.
