Christopher Meloni Not Returning to 'Law & Order: SVU'

The 'Law & Order' franchise drama continues -- with or without the shows' stars. For weeks, rumors have been swirling that Jennifer Love Hewitt might be replacing Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson on 'Special Victims Unit.' Fans breathed a sigh of relief when Hargitay signed on for one more season, but now it looks like it's time to start searching for Elliott Stabler's replacement. According to TVLine.com, Christopher Meloni will not be returning for the show's 13th season this fall. 'SVU' has been on the air at NBC for over a decade, since 1999, with Meloni and Hargitay as the leads, but while contract negotiations worked out for Hargitay, it wasn't so simple for Meloni. According to TVLine's unnamed source, "Protracted talks between the actor ... and studio NBC Universal broke down on Tuesday."...

Is Christopher Meloni Really Done with 'Law and Order: SVU'?

Things haven't really been going very well on NBC, and now here's another kick in the shins. Actor Christopher Meloni is talking about leaving 'Law and Order: SVU' at the end of this season. That's right. No more New York detective Elliot Stabler. What's going on and why? Well, after a dozen years pounding the pavement and fighting the good fight as Elliot, Meloni is interested in doing something else with his career. In an interview Down Under with the Australian Courier-Mail, Meloni said, "I think 12 years is enough." Eight is enough, yes, but twelve? Anyway, Chris goes on to say that he has interest in doing film projects and returning to the theater. As for the future of Elliot on 'Law and Order: SVU,' Meloni believes he's giving the writers plenty of time to work out a satisfactory exit. He said, "The writers will have fertile ground to figure out how to arc [his way] out to another place, whether it's this world or the next."...

To the delight of many -- including the 'SVU' fans here at AOL TV -- the dynamic TV detective duo posed for photos on the red carpet. Is Christopher Meloni Leaving 'SVU'? In a Tweet, "No"

Rest easy, 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' fans. Despite a story published on Friday (and later yanked offline) in Australia's Courier-Mail newspaper, Christopher Meloni is not quitting his day job as Det. Elliot Stabler on 'SVU.' At least, that's what his boss says. 'SVU' executive producer Neal Baer debunked the rumor in a tweet. Asked by a fan if the story about Meloni's departure was true, Baer simply replied, "No." To another fan's similar question, he replied, "Don't believe everything you read in the papers!" The original article purportedly quoted Meloni as saying that he'd be leaving the show at the end of the 2010-11 season to focus on theater and film, and that he felt 12 years on the show would be enough. It also purportedly quoted his TV partner Mariska Hargitay as saying she hoped Stabler doesn't get written off the show by being killed because that would devastate her character, Det. Olivia Benson....

Christopher Meloni's 'SVU' Replacement: Who's on the Short List?

It's only been a month since Christopher Meloni stepped down from 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,' but producers are reportedly screen-testing his possible replacements in New York today. Production on the upcoming Season 13 is due to get underway soon and, according to Deadline.com, 'SVU' creator/executive producer Dick Wolf and NBC have narrowed the field to a short list of five. The actors, who have all doubtless just spent a sleepless night in the Big Apple rehearsing their lines, have been named as: Danny Pino ('Cold Case'), Kevin Alejandro ('True Blood,' 'Southland'), David Conrad ('Ghost Whisperer'), Michael Raymond-James ('Terriers') and Rhys Coiro ('Entourage'). Each one will test today with Meloni's co-star, Mariska Hargitay, who plays Det. Olivia Benson on the drama. Both Alejandro and Raymond-James recently guest-starred on 'SVU,' so could be feeling like they've got the edge....

Who Should Replace Christopher Meloni on 'Law & Order: SVU'?

Christopher Meloni will leave a Stabler-shaped hole in the hearts of 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' fans this fall. We don't yet know how he'll say goodbye to 'SVU' after 12 seasons on the job, but it's never too early to start preparing ourselves for someone else taking over the sex crimes beat. While rumors have been swirling about who will replace Mariska Hargitay -- she's only coming back for 13 episodes next season as Olivia Benson before departing herself -- not much has popped up in the way of recasting the role Meloni made famous. Assuming they'll keep a man on the job to maintain that same partner dynamic, we've come up with a few great options (casting agents, take note!) to spar with Hargitay and her eventual successor, including two 'L&O' franchise alums and two stars from opposing sides on 'The Wire.'...

Mariska Hargitay Opens Up About Christopher Meloni Leaving 'Law & Order: SVU'

Mariska Hargitay is just as upset as we are about Christopher Meloni's decision not to return as Det. Elliot Stabler on 'Law & Order: SVU' next season. The actress also known as Olivia Benson told TV Line, "For the past 12 years Chris has been my partner and friend, both on screen and off. He inspired me every day with his integrity, his extraordinary talent and his commitment to the truth. I love him deeply and will miss him terribly -- I'm so excited to see what he'll do next." We are too, Mariska. We are too....

'Law & Order: SVU' Shakeup: Jennifer Love Hewitt to Replace Mariska Hargitay?

Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have made it no secret that they're interested in cutting back on their hours manning the Special Victims Unit on 'Law & Order: SVU.' But news broke today that an unlikely actress is eying a role as Hargitay's replacement: Jennifer Love Hewitt. The former 'Ghost Whisperer' star is reportedly in talks to take over as the partner of Meloni's Elliot Stabler around mid-season when Hargitay's Olivia Benson will be promoted to a supervisor position, TV Line reports. Hargitay has signed a deal to return for 'SVU''s 13th season, but will work fewer hours for the same salary. Meloni has not yet signed a deal, but he is reportedly asking for a raise and will likely not come to an official agreement until after NBC's Upfront presentation next week....

Jennifer Love Hewitt Out of 'Law & Order: SVU' Race?

Jennifer Love Hewitt won't be busting pedophiles on TV anytime soon, according to reports. The former 'Ghost Whisperer' star was reportedly in talks to join 'Law & Order: SVU' as a new detective when Mariska Hargitay starts her part-time duty, but that's looking unlikely now. According to Deadline, Hewitt is out of the race. Last week, rapper/actor Ice-T signed a new deal with the show and confirmed no new actors have been tapped to replace Hargitay's Detective Benson or Christopher Meloni's Detective Stabler. Hargitay signed a new deal to be with the show part-time, Meloni did not sign a new contract. Deadline reports a possible 'SVU' scenario has Meloni being replaced with another female lead....

'Law & Order' Headed to Los Angeles?

After 20 years, NBC's relationship with the 'Law & Order' franchise is still going strong. According to sources for Deadline Hollywood, NBC has picked up 'Law & Order: Los Angeles,' the latest show in Dick Wolf's juggernaut franchise, for 13 episodes this fall. 'Brotherhood' creator Blake Masters is co-creating the series with Wolf. Meanwhile, a 12th season of 'Law & Order: SVU' is looking more and more likely now that show leads Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have cleared their schedules to shoot new episodes this summer, according to the report. Based on contract negotiations from last spring, Hargitay and Meloni are expected return under a one-year deal that includes the option of an additional season....

Would you watch Law and Order: SVU without Meloni and Hargitay?

And I can hear every Law and Order: SVU fan screaming at the same time, "Noooooooooooooooooooooo!" Michael Ausiello is reporting that stars Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay are asking for more money (they currently get $7 million a year), and sources say that the network might replace them if the stars keep asking for that money. The show was recently renewed for an 11th season. I'm not too sure they couldn't be replaced. I mean, it would, of course, depend on who they go to replace them, but haven't they replaced the cast of the original Law and Order quite a bit? Characters left, characters died, some actors died in real life, and they brought in new people. Though I wonder if Meloni and Hargitay, since they have been on the show for so long, are the show and just can't be replaced. Or maybe they can just have it be John Munch: Private Eye....

Water War! Splashing to the Death on 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon' (VIDEO)

Things are about to get wet. In his role as a hard-nosed detective on 'Law and Order: SVU,' actor Christopher Meloni has seen his share of tough situations. But he's never encountered anything as tough as what he's about to deal with on 'Late Night' (weeknights, 12:37AM ET on NBC). Okay, that's completely untrue. We were just trying to hype this up a little bit. For reasons that are better left unexplained, Meloni enters into a game of war with host Jimmy Fallon. But it's not just war. It's ... WATER WAR! The rules are simple, since they're based on the incredibly easy children's card game. Here's how to play: ...
