'Battle of the Blades': I'm a Believer

A couple of weeks ago, I made a few minor complaints about 'Battle of the Blades.' I take it all back. Not only did the show address a few of my issues (getting more comments from the female competitors, booking judges from the world of figure skating, like Kristy Yamaguchi and Katarina Witt), but they invited me to come see the Sunday night finale. I do like to get invited places. But never has an invitation made me feel quite so lucky to do what I do for a living (namely make snide comments about people who are more talented and ambitious than I am). Walking up to Maple Leaf Gardens from the parking spot I found in another time zone, a huge line of people are waiting for the ticket that will become available when people like me fail to show....

Another garden show

Gardening is quickly becoming the most popular pastime among adults, according to a poll I conducted just now, with myself. At any rate, there have always been gardening shows on TV for those who love to throw themselves at Mother Nature and really get their hands dirty. The latest offering from the DIY Network titled The Dirt on Gardening doesn't sound like it will be radically different from other gardening shows, save for an interactive format that allows experts to answer viewer questions on the air. I understand this will appeal to some and sound utterly boring to others, but all I know is that I could have used this show back when I spent six months trying to teach a Venus flytrap to play the kazoo. According to a five-year-old I spoke with the other day, it's impossible. The new show begins production this summer. ...

Kathie Lee Admits to Hiding Marla Maples in Her Basement (VIDEO)

On 'Access Hollywood Live' (weekdays, syndicated), Kathie Lee Gifford revealed a little-known fact about herself: She once hid Marla Maples in her basement for a month so she could escape the paparazzi following her divorce from Donald Trump....

This is the commercial I hate the most right now

Unlike some people, I don't mind Olive Garden at all. But I can't say the same about their current commercial. Does the mother in it seem like she's flirting with her son? The dad is out of town so she thinks this is the ideal time to take her son to Olive Garden and grill him about his girlfriend. The whole thing seems weird, from how the kid answers to the way the mother looks at him. Strange? Maaaaaaaybe! ...

Press Kits Unwrapped: FOX's Vanished

With all the new shows starting up within the next couple of months, the press kits have started to arrive at TV Squad HQ. I've been pretty surprised at how elaborate some of these packets can get. Take, for example, the press packet for Weeds. It came complete with a nice little gardening bag (with Weeds logo), a gardening trowel, rake, two different gardening shears and some crazy super plant growth fertilizer. I plan to use them on my, er, parsley. Yeah. The press packet for FOX's new show Vanished came in the other day, and it's another doozy. I think we'll have to hand out press kit awards every year if they keep this sort of thing up. So, what's in the press kit? Read on for some shots....

Jamie Oliver, a favorite of many Food Network lovers, will be returning "home" with his new show to air in January. Probably most famous for his show The Naked Chef, Jamie's new show will be called Jamie at Home. The man who should replace Conan

Sure, we all know Conan O'Brien will take over The Tonight Show in 2009, but who will take over Conan's show? Joe Garden, an Onion writer, thinks he'd be the perfect person, and he has a Web site set up that tells you why. He even has this winning endorsement from author Dave Eggers: "The idea of Joe Garden hosting Late Night doesn't bother me that much." I don't know if he'd make a good late night host or not, but his suggestions on how to psyche your opponent out while playing Monopoly is enough for me to vote for him....

The X-Files: Fire

(S01E12) We're back to the Monster of the Week episodes and this one's a doozy. This time the perp is a pyromaniac who can start fires with his mind or something. That's bad news for Mulder who is deathly afraid, of all things, fire. Oh, and Mulder's investigating the case with his ex-girlfriend (Phoebe) from Oxford. The episode opens in England with a gardener smiling as his boss suddenly explodes into flames and dies on his front lawn. The next time we see the gardener, he has dropped his accent and is posing as a caretaker for an American home where a British family is moving in. He really hates the British aristocracy....

The Daily Show: October 12, 2006

"Garden Statement": Holy crap, Bush's attire-banter is scary. Why the sudden interest in fashion? Geez. And the correspondent strip-poker thing was hilarious. I mean, the sight of seeing Dan Bakkedahl, Jason Jones, John Oliver, and Rob Riggle playing strip-poker was okay, but the united gasp of horror that arose from the audience as Bakkedahl started taking his underwear off? That was comedy gold....

Did Swine Flu Sideline David Boreanaz and 'Bones'?

Here's another mystery for the sleuths of 'Bones': What was the bug that benched Booth (David Boreanaz), shutting down production on the Fox crime procedural Monday for the first time ever while the actor recuperated? The initial rumor, spread by none other than show runner Hart Hanson, was that Boreanaz had swine flu. But both Hanson and 'Bones'' production company rushed to quash that rumor, insisting that the 40-year-old actor simply suffered from garden-variety flu, and that production would, with luck, resume on Tuesday. ...

Annie Lennox Wears "HIV Positive" T-Shirt Onstage With Aretha (VIDEO)

On the second night of the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert, which was taped in October at Madison Square Garden and aired yesterday on HBO, Annie Lennox joined Aretha Franklin onstage while wearing a t-shirt reading "HIV Positive." Lennox, who reportedly wore the shirt as a way to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS, joined the Queen of Soul for a rendition of her 1967 hit 'Chain of Fools.' Watch the video after the jump....

The Apprentice: Martha Stewart: Episode 10

Several people are absolutely ecstatic - like Oprah's audience on "Favorite Things" day ecstatic - that Amanda is gone. Marcela has survived, and Jim seems to be the puppet master. Martha calls and tells the contestants to go to her house on Turkey Hill Road, where they will see her garden and also "be introduced to their next task."...

Subtle Subtitles: 'The Amazing Race' Results

Subtle Subtitles will be taking a break for a little while as weekly column. Fearing reprisal from this fact, Bob has politely asked me ... well, okay, "ask" isn't quite the right word. Nor is "polite." Let me put it another way with greater veracity ... Bob forced me by threatening bodily harm using gardening tools to select the winner of this week's post of Subtle Subtitles....
