Jake Doyle, Canadian P.I.

CBC is pulling out all the stops this winter, and is debuting two new shows this week – '18 to Life' and 'Republic of Doyle'. The latter follows a father/son private investigation team based in picturesque St. John's, Newfoundland. The duo tackles cases of all sorts, from catching adulterers to busting drug rings. The show's hero, Jake Doyle, is often distracted by his feisty ex-wife, the attractive local policewoman and his precocious teenage niece. AOL TV Canada caught up with Allan Hawco, the co-creator and star of 'Doyle' (not to mention writer and producer), who gives off a strangely Colin Farrell-esque vibe. We picked his brain about everything from Newfoundland's fresh, fresh air to why he thinks women rule the world to Doyle guest stars like Mary Walsh, Gordon Pinsent and even Seamus O'Regan....

Pity Felix Gaeta. First, he was almost shot out of an airlock. Then he lost a leg. NBC Buys 1980s Wrestling Drama Pilot From Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson

Can you smell what The Rock is cooking? It's a wrestling TV drama. According to a report in Deadline, NBC has bought a pilot based on the professional wrestling boom of the 1980s, to be produced by former WWE star Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. For wrestling fans, the '80s were a golden era that gave rise to some of the sports most legendary stars, like Hulk Hogan, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, and Bret "The Hitman" Heart. The show will be written by Brent Fletcher, who has worked as a writer for NBC on the football drama 'Friday Night Lights,' and Seamus Kevin Fahey, writer of 'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.' Jerry Bruckheimer will be one of the co-executive producers....

Family Guy: Bill and Peter's Bogus Journey

(S05E13) Ya know, no matter what part political affiliation you claim, I think we can all agree that Bill Clinton lends himself well to comedy. There's just enough hillbilly in his character to make him easy to laugh at. Family Guy certainly isn't the first show to take a run at Clinton, and they've now featured the former president four or five times, but there's plenty of room at that party. That's getting ahead of the game though. Before we could get to the Peter and Bill hijinks, there was the loosely relevant opening at the Quahog Marine Center. While it was a long way to go to get to the main plot, there were a lot of funny bits in that opening. Herbert at the fondle tank, Stewie's stripper line, and Seamus saving Peter from the octopus were all good bits. I especially liked the Wacky Wall Walker finish to that....

Want to Know What Happens on 'Lost'? Not Even Cast Member Frederick Koehler Knows

So say you're an actor and fan of 'Lost' and you happen to get cast on the show. Utopia, right? Not only do you get to be part of the biggest television event of the year but you can find out what happens in the end months ahead of everyone else. Hardly. Frederick Koehler ('Pepper Dennis,' 'Dexter') came on the island this season as Seamus, a scientist working for Charles Widmore (Alan Dale) who is killed by The Man In Black (Titus Welliver) while guarding the Candidates. For Koehler, a fan of the show long before his appearance on it, the cliched "dream role" aptly applied. When TV Squad caught up with Koehler on the set of 'Death Race: Frankenstein Lives' earlier this year, we asked him about 'Lost' and immediately got the "I can't talk about it" reply. But the actor did open up a little about being on the most secretive show on television....

What to Watch: December 27 - January 2

Desperate Housewives - Sunday January 2, 9PM ET/PT, CTV/ABC How did I miss this? There was a riot on Wisteria Lane. An honest-to-goodness trampling, and it turns out I'm totally in touch with the mob mentality, because I also would have trampled straight for Susan. Check out the picture -- doesn't it look like Shawn Majumder turned up to help sqaush out the whining that is Susan? Awesome -- I support you Shawn! Anyhow, she's in hospital, but I have a feeling it won't be fatal. Meanwhile it looks like someone shot creepy Paul Young, and man-candy Brian Austin Green moves in with Bree....

'Archer' Season 2, Episode 5 Recap

['Archer': 'The Double Deuce'] Let's start this week's Archer recap with a pop quiz. Were you surprised that A) Woodhouse was a war hero, B) Sterling Archer's birth was even weirder than you might have guessed, and C) the Archer family's child-rearing strategies seem to involve large quantities of alcohol? For the child, as well as the parent?...

What to Watch: TV Picks for August 8 - 14

Karaoke Battle USA - Friday August 12, 9 PM ET/PT All the televised singing competitions have suffered the slings and arrows of being called nothing but a karaoke contest. Finally, a show that actually is just a karaoke contest. If you're lucky, you live in a town with a popular karaoke night with a couple of truly talented regulars -- you know, the whole bar roots for them and enjoys the performance, and they often have a signature tune or two. This show brings those people together for a sing-off, hosted by Joey Fatone and judged by singer Carnie Wilson, journalist Joe Levy, and Brian Scott, the 2009 National Karaoke Champion. I'm really looking forward to Levy's contributions -- I remember him from his witty comments on 'Behind the Music' type shows on the late 90s and early 2000s. He was my most obscure celebrity crush....

Who Will Die on the 'Castle' Season Finale?

Tonight's 'Castle' season finale marks the end of a very fun and very emotional season for Castle, Beckett and the gang. There's the continuing investigation of Beckett's mother's murder, there were all the laughs with the Nikki Heat movie, the freezer incident and, of course, there was the kiss. But the Season 3 finale (Mon., May 16, 10PM ET on ABC) is killing off more than a dead body of the week -- tonight, someone who's been on the show since the beginning will die. Now we know from previews that Castle warns Beckett that she's next to die if she doesn't let go of her mom's death, but let's be real: Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion might get a little banged up, but the show will never kill off its main characters. So who will it be? Let's take a look at the most likely candidates ......

Family Guy: Boys Do Cry

(S05E15) After better than a month off, finally a new episode of Family Guy. I'm not sure I understand the thinking behind the scheduling of the show this year, but the list of behaviors from the networks that I don't understand is a long one. So, we'll take what we can get. Whatever the reasoning, it was nice to have the Griffins back with a fresh adventure. I think I probably came into this one with my expectations set a little high. Those previews that revealed the family packing up and taking a trip put the thought in the back of my mind that this could be one of those classic episodes. It called to mind the season three episode "To Love and Die in Dixie." Unfortunately, now having seen it, it wasn't a classic....

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Dennis and Dee's Mom is Dead

(S03E03) Say goodbye to Anne Archer. Unless she comes back as a ghost. In this episode, Rob, Glenn, and Charlie have decided to kill off Barbara Reynolds, who is Dennis and Dee's mother and the "whore" ex-wife of Frank. Not such a bad idea; Archer didn't really fit well into the mix last year, so having her kick the bucket is probably the best for the show's chemistry. Stephen Collins comes back as Bruce Mathis, Dennis and Dee's real dad and a peach of a guy. Unlike Archer, Collins did do a good job last year, and he does a good job here. The rest of the episode? It's OK... a little sitcommy, but OK....

Allan Hawco Dishes on the Success of 'Republic of Doyle'

Allan Hawco is about as close to a mogul as it gets in Canada these days. The creator, executive producer, writer, and star of 'Republic of Doyle' has parlayed a winning first season into global sales and five Gemini nominations. Not bad for a show just one year old; not to mention it's set in the relatively obscure world of St. John's, Newfoundland. Hawco, a Newfoundlander himself, plays Jake Doyle, an unconventional private eye who creates almost as much trouble as he resolves. He's a gifted sleuth with colorful baggage and an eye for adventure. Females make up 56 percent of the show's fan base and there's little wondering why -- Hawco's loaded with charm. TV Squad spoke with Hawco direct from the St. John's set of 'Republic of Doyle,' where he's shooting an episode for the second season. He was up-front about Newfoundland humor, what the show's secret is and why they don't do stereotypes....

'Archer' Season 2, Episode 3 Recap

['Archer' – 'Blood Test'] 'Archer' fans, be not alarmed: Maureen Ryan will be back next week to continue her usual recaps of the series. But this time around, you have me. I'd tell you what she's up to, but it's a super secret mission for ISIS, and I don't want ODIN to read this and foil her in the field. So let me sneak in during these nine frames of fuzzy footage and talk about tonight's episode, 'Blood Test'. So much of the show straddles the line between spy farce and workplace comedy. Certain figures in ISIS wouldn't be terribly out of place in the Scranton branch of Dunder-Mifflin Sabre, although the majority of their talking head segments there would be bleeped out by the censors. 'Blood Test' took those two elements and fashioned a paternity lawsuit in the way only this show could: Brutal accusations, intra-office soap operas, and of course, enough dark humor to make even the stout of heart blush....
