Stump the King - King of Queens

I've been inundated with letters lately but this one from "Kathy" seemed very urgent. She asks..."Can you tell me the name of the bar from King of Queens?" Well, Kathy, the short answer is yes, yes I can. The long answer, however is only slightly longer. At the risk of name-dropping, I decided that the fastest way to get the answer to this question would be to call my friend Patton Oswalt. I always like to point out that even though Patton has become a full fledged movie star (Ratatouille, Balls of Fury) he is never too busy to be a very cool guy. His true talent, however, is telling jokes and if you ever get a chance to see him live, take it....

Gayle King Says She Will Not Replace Oprah Winfrey

Now that talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has announced she's stepping down in 2011, rumors are flying about who might replace her. Among the rumored replacements: Gayle King, known to many daytime fans as Oprah's best friend. King responded to the reports on Monday in Manhattan, telling Access Hollywood, "That's a very good rumor. That is not true. I haven't had one conversation with CBS about taking over that 4PM slot." Aha! So, does that mean she's in talks for a different time slot? Probably not. "I don't know anybody that could take over that slot," she added....

'Early Show' Superfan Tyler McGill Renames Himself 'King Latifah' (VIDEO)

While talking with Queen Latifah, who hosts the 37th Annual People's Choice Awards tonight, superfan and amateur correspondent Tyler McGill renames himself "King Latifah" and suggests that he might make a good co-host on 'The Early Show' (weekdays, 7AM ET on CBS)....

'True Blood': The Vampire King Tries to Take a Queen (VIDEO)

A king and a queen belong together, right? That makes sense, doesn't it? But can the Vampire King of Mississippi (Denis O'Hare) and the Vampire Queen of Louisiana (Evan Rachel Wood) ever find real love? That's the question on 'True Blood' (Sun., 10PM ET on HBO). [Spoiler alert.] On the latest episode, the King makes a pitch to Sophie-Anne. She's the Queen, and he wants her to be his blushing bride. Unfortunately, things don't go that well. "I've turned you down countless times, why would I accept now?" she says to him. Which is about the point at which the King threatens Sophie-Annie with blackmail and jail. Then he has one of his minions physically assault her. At which point Sophie seems to reluctantly agree to the whole thing. Violence and blackmail; this is the worst marriage pitch we've ever seen. But it is very evil vampire-y. So, there's that....

King of Queens going back to Mondays

If you've grown accustomed to watching King of Queens on Monday nights and have been cowering in the corner weeping and tearing at your garments ever since they switched it to Wednesday nights, then I have good news for you. The show is moving back to Mondays this Fall. Look for Nicole Sullivan to leave the show, and for a possible guest appearance from Ray Romano, too. I've never watched this show religiously, but I'll give it credit for being a basic sitcom that doesn't try to be something more than it really is....

Colin Firth Reveals Why 'King's Speech' Story Is Now Being Told (VIDEO)

Why have we had to wait so long to learn the true story of King George VI's stutter and the man who helped him overcome it? Blame it on the hardiness of his wife, Queen Elizabeth II's mother. As Colin Firth explained on 'The Daily Show' (weeknights, 11PM ET on COM), "Our writer [of 'The King's Speech'], he himself suffered from a very severe stutter, and those broadcasts kind of gave him hope." He later wrote to the Queen Mother, "asking for her permission to tell this story." He was instructed to wait till after her death, as "the memories of these events [were] still too painful. And so he waited... and waited," joked Firth. She passed away in 2002 at the age of 101....

The King of Queens: China Syndrome, Parts 1 & 2 (series finale)

(S09E12 / S09E13) Last month, I wrote a post praising The King of Queens for not making their 200th episode into any kind of "special" episode, just doing the same goofy but funny comedy the show has always done. There was no character development, no great revelations, no massive earth-shattering changes, and no story arcs. I expected them to do the same for the finale; just show another day in the life of the Heffernans and fade to black. We got none of that; in fact, everything I listed above was exactly what we got, not only in this one-hour finale, but the two episodes before that. Drama isn't this show's strong suit, and it made for a finale that was wildly out of character in comparison with the rest of the series....

Tyra Banks as drag king

While Tyra has been looking a bit drag queen-y these days, you're far more likely to catch her playing a drag king. Following up on last year's vapid Tyra-in-a-fat-suit episode of The Tyra Banks Show, Ms. Banks became a Mister in order to infiltrate rapper Chingy's posse. Set to air on November 13th, Tyra underwent five hours of prep to achieve the gender transformation and donned a suit that gave her pecs and a six-pack. Apparently Tyra isn't going undercover as a guy unless he's cut. Her guise was enough to fool most of Chingy's entourage, but her voice was a dead give-away. The only person she really pulled one over on was a Chingy groupie who kissed Tyra-as-man to get closer to the rap star. Does that qualify as hot lesbian action or not?...

Can she talk? Leah Remini in talks for a talk show

Queen Latifah couldn't make it work. Megan Mullally struck out, too. In fact, if you think about it, more stars fail in their attempts to become talk show hosts than succeed. For every Ellen DeGeneres and Tyra Banks, there's a Caroline Rhea and Magic Johnson. So, will sitcom star Leah Remini go from the King of Queens to the queen of daytime talk? CBS -- home of King of Queens for a very successful run from 1998-2007 -- is developing a daytime show for Leah Remini that's being called something different than a typical talk show. If you tune in to The Rachael Ray Show today, you might get an idea of what Leah could bring to daytime -- she's Rach's guest....

King of Queens' latest season to be last

CBS has announced that, after nearly a decade of being on the air, King of Queens will end after its current season runs out in May. Now that Will & Grace and That 70s Show are out of the picture, the program is currently the longest-running sitcom on air Although the show still experiences some decent success in ratings and only recently got their first Emmy nomination (a nod to star Kevin James, this year), I think it's time to pull the plug. I actually used to find the show relatively enjoyable (compared to similar sitcoms like According to Jim), but the whole "Check out the fat guy with the hot chick!" thing began to wear thin a few seasons ago. Ooh! Here's an idea: A wacky sitcom all about a fat wife and her super-hot husband. Haha, I'm just kidding... We've already seen that on Roseanne, with Roseanne Barr and that smokin' super-fox John Goodman....

The King of Queens' 200th episode same as the other 199... is that so bad?

Believe it or not, The King of Queens aired its 200th episode last night. They didn't do anything special to celebrate it. No guest stars, no plot twists, no revelations; Kevin James and company just did the same thing they've been doing since 1998, which is put on a funny show that will never be compared to The Office, but it won't be compared to According to Jim, either. The plots? Doug and Carrie wonder how Deacon and Kelly can afford a vacation home when they can't, and do their best to try to find out. Also, Arthur coaches Spence in the art of finding a new job, then swoops in and steals a position Spence was looking to get. Nothing different than we haven't seen before, and the humor was the same: some laugh-out-loud moments, a few chuckle-worthy moments, mostly generated by the actors' timing and skill rather than the script itself....

Stephen King hates Nancy Grace, too

Oh, and so does John Grisham! Interesting piece by the horror writer in this week's Entertainment Weekly (the one with Kate Winslet on the cover). King talks about the latest controversy involving the mentally unbalanced queen of exploitation legal journalist, and has a few choice observations for the woman he calls "Graceless and Tasteless:" "And before you accuse me of writing about news in your favorite entertainment magazine, let me assure you Nancy Grace is entertainment...if, that is, you're the sort who watches NASCAR for the crashes and Survivor hoping no one will. In the increasingly weird world of infotainment, she is the belle of the Freakers Ball...[Grace] conveys by body language alone the idea that we're all guilty of something...and she knows it." Bravo, Mr. King. He goes on to talk about the recent case involving the disappearance of Trenton Duckett. Grace had his mother on her show and pretty much hammered her about her whereabouts that day, and Duckett wouldn't say (as King points out, her...

'Survivor: Nicaragua' Season 21, Episode 10 Recap

['Survivor: Nicaragua' - 'Stuck in the Middle'] "Something has to change" forewarned Holly (in her South Dakotan twang) at the outset of last night's 'Survivor: Nicaragua,' "and, it has to change soon." And, change it did. Big time. Huge, even. Here's how it went down... Following Marty's ouster at last week's Tribal, Brenda and Sash grew even cockier (if that was possible). "Benry, Fabio and Dan now see that Sash and I aren't on their side," purred Brenda in the dark. "I think Sash and I being in control does look like a king and queen situation, but Sash is more of a queen and I'm more of a king." Wait, didn't Shannon nail that way back in the third episode? Eerie....
