'24' Finale Will Include Eriq La Salle

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 29th 2010 12:06PM
eriq_la_salle_smiling_blueThe news that '24' is coming to an end with the finale of this season wasn't as big a shock as some might have thought a few years back. After all, the ratings were down and some folks wondered if '24' had jumped the you-know-what. Still, when a great show calls it a day, it's a sad time for television.

At least in the finale, '24' will be bringing on some big names to gussy up the finish. 'ER's' Eriq La Salle will appear in the last two '24' episodes, for instance. Eriq will not be playing a surgeon asked to stitch together the remaining limbs of Jack Bauer before shipping him off to Kim in California. In fact, he won't be in scrubs at all.

Mary McDonnell Is Coming Back to 'The Closer'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 28th 2010 1:00PM
the_closer_tnt_kyra_sedgwickThere was a great scene in 'The Closer' in the season finale last December, in which Mary McDonnell made a guest appearance as Captain Sharon Raydor. It was all about how much their two characters disliked each other.

From the TV Squad review, we wrote: "They may be on the same LAPD, but they are not sisters in blue. Pope would be wise not to keep throwing them together, although Commander Taylor and Johnson eventually worked out their differences and now are best buddies. Still, the scene with Mary McDonnell and Kyra Sedgwick explaining how they dislike each other was very good."

Well, Mary and Kyra will get a chance to rekindle that antipathy. In the upcoming season, Mary McDonnell is coming back to 'The Closer,'

Jersey 'Housewives' Are Coming Back May 3

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 26th 2010 10:47AM
real_housewives_of_new_jersey_standingIn anticipation of the new season of 'The Real Housewives of New Jersey,' the restaurateurs in the Franklin Lakes vicinity have decided to anchor all dining tables to the floor like McDonald's and Burger King. That way, Teresa can't be doing any table-flipping unless she's wearing a cape with a giant 'S' in red and has an aversion to Kryptonite.

No seriously -- and table-flipping is hardly that -- those Jersey women are coming back. Bravo's 'The Real Housewives of New Jersey' returns Monday, May 3 at 10 PM ET. And unlike some editions of the 'Real Housewives,' all the principals are part of the action.

'Nurse Jackie' - 'Comfort Food' Recap (Season Premiere)

Remember seeing the variety shows where a guy was spinning plates and the point of the trick was to keep all the plates spinning so that nothing fell to the ground and crashed into a million pieces? That's the ongoing life of Nurse Jackie.

Season two commenced not unlike the season one premiere, with Jackie flat on her back and a 1960's tune underscoring the moment. Instead of 'Valley of the Dolls,' it was 'Say A Little Prayer," but the sentiment remained the same. Jackie's a high wire act even when she's on her ass.

'United States of Tara' - 'Yes' Recap (Season Premiere)

The united part of the 'United States of Tara' was served up handily in the season premiere, with the family looking like the model of normalcy. And yet even as there seemed to be nothing wrong, below the surface was that gnawing feeling that Buck, T, Alice and whoever, might be lurking, ready to pop out. When the pop finally went off, however, it wasn't what we anticipated. It wasn't even in their house. More on that and the purple carnations after the jump.

'Chuck' - 'Chuck Versus the Final Exam' Recap

(S03E11) In tonight's episode, Clark Kent was taking orders from Superman. Chuck did look a little like Clark Kent in that outfit, didn't he?

Hasn't General Beckman and the government given Chuck enough tests? He probably already has more field time than most of their other agents. It seems pretty obvious that Chuck doesn't actually want to be a spy, particularly when being a spy requires the ability to kill a person in cold blood. He just wants to be with Sarah. He'd be a better tech guy, the "Q" to Sarah's Bond.

More discussion after the jump.

'Breaking Bad' - 'No Mas' Recap (Season Premiere)

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 22nd 2010 12:09AM
breaking_bad_amc_season_3_premiere(S03E01) The return of 'Breaking Bad' is a reason to celebrate. No, it's not that Walter White is the kind of character you cheer for and enjoy watching. Rather, it's that the ongoing story of Walt, the very act of his breaking bad, is the most compelling television currently on the air.

There are elements of 'Breaking Bad' that are simply unmatched on any other drama series. This return picks up precisely where the last season ended, albeit a few days later, but the tone, the time and the emotional dynamite is firmly intact. Be prepared for the ride of your life in the weeks ahead.

NBC Renews 'Days of Our Lives'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 20th 2010 11:02AM
days_of_our_lives_logo_hourglass_nbcIf you been keeping track of the daytime ratings, you probably noticed that 'Days of Our Lives' has been on an upswing. NBC noticed. In fact, after a shaky year in which the threat of cancellation hung over their necks like the Sword of Damocles, 'Days of Our Lives' has been renewed for another year.

That means that this November, NBC and 'Days' will be able to celebrate 45 years on the air. In making the announcement, Marc Graboff, Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, said, "'Days of our Lives' continues to be a favorite of the daytime audience and we are thrilled to keep it going through its 45th season. 'Days' has shown year-to-year increases in key female demographics and remains both relevant and fresh creatively."

The first week in April will be tumultuous for the folks from 'Glee.' Sunday, April 4, is Easter, then on Monday, April 5, the gang will be at the White House for the annual Easter Egg festivities. Then on Wednesday, April 7, 'Glee' goes to 'The Oprah Winfrey Show'! They should sing 'My Kind of Town' as a tribute to Chicago when they get off the plane, don't you think?

Beau Bridges Joins 'Rockford Files'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 19th 2010 10:29AM
Beau_bridges_smiling_headshotIt's rare when you hear about a casting and just say to yourself, "Oh, perfect." Well, that happened today. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Beau Bridges is going to be Dermot Mulroney's father on NBC's new 'The Rockford Files.' It's not just that Bridges, older brother of Oscar winner Jeff Bridges, is a terrific actor; he's really right for the role.

In the original 'Rockford Files,' Noah Berry, Jr. played Rocky, Jim's father, who served as both Jim's buddy and foil. They hung out together and understood each other. Rocky had been a truck driver and had a no-nonsense, clear vision of things.

He'd give Jim advice or just voice his opinion, often in a wry way. Presumably in NBC's version, which 'House' creator David Shore is overseeing and also involves 'The Office's' Steve Carell as executive producer, Beau Bridges as Rocky will be the same kind of guy.

'Two and a Half Men' Crew Warned to Keep Quiet

Generally speaking, what happens in the workplace usually is not meant for media consumption. Unless it's a Karen Silkwood situation, employees know that you don't blab about your fellow workers. Except in show business! Apparently, the very idea of working on a set or in the production offices where glamorous stars are toiling is a reason to yap about what you see.

This is especially true when those glittery vessels of acting have questionable personal lives that have already been selling ad space in newspapers, magazines and web sites. This is all a preface to the report filed by TMZ.com that the 'Two and a Half Men' team have been told to keep quiet about Charlie Sheen.

At this point in 'NCIS,' every episode has a certain amount of fun in it just because we like the characters so much. It's the team interaction and the nuggets of character development that are generally more interesting than the mystery, although there was a clever, treasure subplot in this one. And there was someone new in the mix. For more on the anti-Gibbs -- or maybe she was more of the alter-Gibbs -- follow me after the jump.

Ousted 'Idol' Singer Angles For Role on 'Glee'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 15th 2010 11:00AM
todrick_hall_american_idol_foxThere's something annoying about a shameless self-promoter. Granted, anybody who puts themselves in the circus that is 'American Idol' is a shameless self-promoter. Heck, if you're in show business at all, you probably qualify. But there are ways to push yourself forward without being smug or smarmy.

In USA Today, ousted 'American Idol' singer Todrick Hall wants to be on 'Glee.' He has made no secret of his desire, especially now that he's definitely not going to be the next 'American Idol.' With little humility, and less tact, Todrick turned his exit interviews from 'Idol' into a campaign to get on 'Glee.' He probably figures that they're both on Fox. They both feature singers and dancers. Surely, the 'Glee' folks would snatch up a good-looking performer like him.

'Mad Men's' Sal To Guest on 'Ugly Betty'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 12th 2010 10:15AM
bryan_batt_mad_men_nycThe men from 'Mad Men' are very busy these days. You have Jon Hamm all over the place, with beard and without, not to mention he and John Slattery being immortalized by Mattel as action figures. Action figures sound more manly than dolls, but you get the picture. The other night Rich Sommer was on 'Ugly Betty' as loutish firefighter.

And now the news that Bryan Batt will be on 'Ugly Betty,' too. TVGuide.com confirms that Bryan -- who was so good on 'Mad Men' as Salvatore Romano -- will be playing a soap opera star who Amanda decides would be Mr. Right for Marc. She plays Yenta, the Matchmaker, and hopefully, the two guys will hit it off. Batt's set for the April 7 episode, and may be in the series finale as well.
