Joseph Wershba, TV News Pioneer, Dies Aged 90

by Catherine Lawson, posted May 17th 2011 6:45AM
Joseph WershbaTV news pioneer Joseph Wershba, an Emmy-winning CBS News producer and reporter, whose work helped to bring the McCarthy witch hunts to an end, has died at the age of 90.

The Associated Press reports that Wershba, who was one of the original '60 Minutes' producers, died at his home at Long Island, New York of complications from pneumonia.

In a statement, CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager said, "Joe Wershba was a wonderful man who was a pioneer of broadcast journalism, without the notoriety of his more celebrated colleagues Ed Murrow and Don Hewitt. ... Almost everything he touched became part of the foundation for CBS News, including '60 Minutes.'"

In 1954 Wershba led a report on Sen. McCarthy for Edward R. Murrow's CBS TV news segment, 'See It Now.' The exposé helped discredit McCarthy, and was one of the inspirations for the movie 'Good Night and Good Luck,' in which Wershba was played by Robert Downey, Jr.

On '60 Minutes' (Sunday 7 PM ET on CBS) Lelsie Stahl asked Boehner why the occasion had moved him to tears. Boehner explained that there are certain things he finds hard to talk about, and mentioned that he can no longer visit schools, which he used to do often.

Why?" Stahl wondered.

"Making sure these kids have a shot at the American dream," Boehner explained, as he started to get choked up. "It's important," he added, before losing it completely.

"What you see is what you get," Boehner said, after composing himself. "I know who I am. I'm comfortable in my own skin, and everybody who knows me knows that I get emotional about certain things."

Mark Zuckerberg Addresses What 'The Social Network' Got Right and Wrong (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Dec 6th 2010 5:10PM
According to Mark Zuckerberg, the movie 'The Social Network' -- which is about the founding of his company, Facebook -- was "pretty fun" to watch.

In a '60 Minutes' (Sunday, 7 PM ET on CBS) interview with Leslie Stahl, the 26-year-old founder and CEO of Facebook also addressed what the film got wrong and right.

"I think they got every single T-shirt that they had the Mark Zuckerberg character wearing right, I think I actually own those T-shirts," he explained.

"There are hugely basic things they got wrong too -- they made it seem like my whole motivation for building Facebook was so I could get girls, and they completely left out that my girlfriend I have been dating since before I started Facebook," he said, much to the shock of Stahl.

Maybe Stahl shouldn't have been so surprised that Zuckerberg is still together with his college girlfriend. It doesn't appear he's changed his T-shirt heavy wardrobe much since then either.

James Cameron Says O.J. Simpson Was Almost Cast as 'The Terminator' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jun 28th 2010 1:35AM
James Cameron Thought O.J. Simpson was 'Too Nice' for 'The Terminator'James Cameron is the director of 'Avatar' -- the highest-grossing film in history. But Mr. Cameron hasn't always had a smooth road to movie success. On '60 Minutes' (Sun., 7PM ET on CBS), Cameron discusses his early years in the industry -- including the time a studio tried to cast O.J. Simpson in one of his movies.

After being fired from his first directing job -- on the notorious flop 'Piranha II' -- Cameron had a vision for a new film. This vision literally came to him in a dream; a dream about a skeletal robot rising from a fire. In the end, the film became 'The Terminator,' his first blockbuster success.

But even though Arnold Schwarzenegger became famous in the role, he wasn't the studio's first choice. An executive wanted to cast O.J. Simpson as the killer cyborg from the future. Cameron was completely against the idea, thinking that O.J. would be totally miscast as a killer. Of course, this all took place years before the murders that would make Simpson infamous.

For the record, Conan O'Brien's sit down with Steve Kroft on '60 Minutes' on May 2, 2010 -- the first date he was contractually allowed to discuss what happened -- clearly established that while he's disappointed about what happened, Conan O'Brien is not defeated. To paraphrase 'Evita,' "Don't cry for him, America."
