'Hawaii Five-0': Playing 'Chicken' With a Jet (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 2nd 2010 9:02AM
'Hawaii Five-0': Playing 'Chicken' With a JetWhen you're playing the game of "chicken," you have to fully commit. Two people are headed together on a collision course -- the first one to flinch loses the game. On the other hand, if no one flinches -- then everyone loses. And on 'Hawaii Five-0' (Mon., 10PM ET on CBS), that could lead to death.

[Warning: Spoiler alert.]

On the new episode, Navy SEAL Graham Wilson (Adam Beach) is accused of a crime he didn't commit. Wilson is blamed for the death of his wife -- as a result, he goes berserk. The solider grabs a bunch of hostages. He demands that the cops find the real killer -- or else.

Graham is playing chicken, but so are policemen Danno and McGarrett (Scott Caan and Alex O'Loughlin). As a former SEAL, Steve McGarrett sympathizes with Graham. But his partner Danny "Danno" Williams just thinks the guy is a murderer.

Four Ways 'Hawaii Five-0' Can Stand Out From Other Procedurals

by Joel Keller, posted Oct 5th 2010 2:45PM
Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan in 'Hawaii Five-0' on CBSWhy has 'Hawaii Five-0' been a ratings success so far? It's not hard to figure out the formula. It's in a good timeslot that served 'CSI: Miami' well for a number of years. There isn't a heck of a lot of competition (maybe 'Castle,' but that's about it). And having Grace Park in a bikini or otherwise sexy outfit every week doesn't hurt.

But after three episodes, the show still has yet to break out from the procedural shell it's in. There have been signs that the show can become more than just a "case of the week" kind of program, but they're minor at best. So far, the show's been carried by some good action, good chemistry between Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan, and the aforementioned Park-in-bikini scenes (can't mention those enough).

Based on those signs, and the legacy of the original series, there are a few ways Roberto Orici, Alex Kurtzman, and their writers can take this show in a direction that makes it stand out from other procedurals.

'Hawaii Five-0' Premiere Review: Caan You Dig It?

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 20th 2010 9:15AM
In the pilot for 'Hawaii Five-0,' a can-do type with a strong jawline assembles a crack law-enforcement team around him. They will Do What It Takes to Get Things Done.

In other words, the CBS drama is not just a remake of the vintage Hawaii-set cop show starring Jack Lord. 'Hawaii Five-0' (10PM ET Monday, CBS) replicates the premise of a whole host of CBS procedurals.

Your mileage will vary as to whether that's a problem for you.

Perhaps Third Time May Be the Charm for Jerry O'Connell and Alex O'Loughlin This Fall

by Rich Keller, posted Aug 22nd 2010 6:00PM
Jerry O'Connell and Alex O'LoughlinLuck hasn't been on the side of actors Alex O'Loughlin and Jerry O'Connell as of late. Though critical and fan favorites in their previous endeavors, they have a combined four failed TV series over the last three years -- a poor record in any situation. Dare we even whisper the words "show killer"? Yet, network executives still see something in both of these actors to give them another chance.

That's why, come September, both O'Loughlin and O'Connell will be in brand new CBS series: O'Loughlin as Steve McGarrett in a remake of 'Hawaii Five-O' and O'Connell as a Las Vegas lawyer in 'The Defenders.' The question is, will their respective curses be broken or will they need to look for another job outside of acting?

'Hawaii Five-O' Producers Swear Their 'Reboot' Will Honor Original - TCA Report

by Joel Keller, posted Jul 28th 2010 9:29PM
TCA 'Hawaii Five-O' panel: Alex Kurtzman, Alex O'Loughlin, Scot Caan, and Peter Lenkov
At the TCA panel for 'Hawaii Five-O' this morning, producers Alex Kurtzman and Peter Lenkov swore up, down and sideways that they're both huge fans of the original show from the '60s and '70s. But they also kept calling the show a "reboot" or "reimagining," trying to stay as far way as possible from the work "remake."

According to Kurtzman, "I think, for me, the word "remake" suggests that we're doing exactly the same thing, just doing it again. And I think in our experience in 'Star Trek,' we felt like you have to find the spirit of what that original franchise was about, and you have to really be true to it, and then you have to expand on it and bring it into the modern time with whatever rules will govern it."

Krurtzman, Roberto Orici, and Lenkov think they've kept to the true spirit of the show, and the first piece of evidence they give is the theme song.

Alex O'Loughlin Fails at TV Theme Song Trivia (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Apr 21st 2010 3:30PM
Rachael Ray stumps Australian actor Alex O'Loughlin, who stars in 'The Back-up Plan' with Jennifer Lopez, by testing his knowledge of theme songs to classic American TV shows on 'The Rachael Ray Show' (weekdays, syndicated).

O'Loughlin, who claims to be an avid fan of American TV, correctly belts out a line from the 'Brady Bunch' theme, but fails at 'The Golden Girls.' And, when he can't recall the theme to 'Cheers,' the audience groans, then starts to sing the song for him. "I just wanted to hear the audience sing," O'Loughlin said sheepishly.

On 'The Early Show' (weekdays, 7AM ET on CBS), anchor Maggie Rodriguez reminds actor Alex O'Loughlin, who stars with Jennifer Lopez in 'The Back-up Plan,' of an old quote in which he said he's afraid of losing his anonymity due to fame.

"It is true. I think that a lot of actors are private people. I think a lot of actors really, you know, don't live the life that the rest of the world thinks we would live," O'Loughlin said, adding that he "might have to move to Hawaii' in order to deal with his increasing fame.

Emmy Winner Jean Smart Joins 'Hawaii Five-O' Remake

by Kim Potts, posted Mar 9th 2010 9:15AM
Aloha, Martha Logan! Kooky former '24' First Lady Jean Smart is staying in the political game, but this time, she'll be the governor of Hawaii.

Smart, who received two Emmy nominations for her role as the wife of plotting President Charles Logan on seasons 5 and 6 of '24,' has signed on to play the completely ethical Hawaii Governor Pat Jameson in CBS' 'Hawaii Five-O' remake.

The multiple Emmy winner ('Samantha Who?'; 'Frasier') joins a 'Hawaii' cast that already includes 'Moonlight' and 'Three Rivers' star Alex O'Loughlin as Det. Steve McGarrett, 'Ocean's Eleven' star Scott Caan as Danny "Book 'em, Danno" Williams, 'Lost's' Daniel Dae Kim as Det. Chin Ho Kelly and 'Sons of Anarchy's' Taryn Manning as McGarrett's younger sister, Mary Ann.

Scott Caan Will Be Danno in New 'Hawaii Five-O'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 5th 2010 2:03PM
scott_caan_into_the_blue_oceanThe 'Hawaii Five-O' pilot just got a bit more interesting. Tough guy actor Scott Caan has been cast as Danno, joining Alex O'Loughlin as Steve McGarrett. What makes it interesting is that in the original series, McGarrett was the older member of the squad, the leader based on experience if not seniority. Danny Williams was a younger guy, with McGarrett as sort of his mentor.

O'Loughlin and Caan are the same age. That would mean that they'll be more like partners. Like Sam and Callen on 'NCIS: Los Angeles,' which is reminiscent of 'Starsky and Hutch.'

Well, there's nothing wrong with that, but it's not exactly the original, is it? It's a new version of 'Hawaii Five-O' and, apparently, that's the point. Like the updated 'Star Trek' movie, which coincidentally, was written by the same guys, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who are doing the pilot.

So while this show will focus on an elite branch of the Hawaii State Police with McGarrett and Danno, it's not the same old CBS franchise.

'Lost's' Daniel Dae Kim tapped for 'Hawaii 5-0' remake

daniel_dae_kim_lost_abcCBS's new incarnation of 'Hawaii Five-0' to a huge step towards becoming a reality with one casting move. Daniel Dae Kim will be playing one of the 'Hawaii Five-0' team. The 'Lost' veteran, who is available for work because the ABC drama ends on May 23, will be a cop on 'Five-0.'

No, they're not making Steve McGarrett, the lead detective. Kim has been cast as Detective Chin Ho Kelly, the second or third guy, depending on the episode. In the original series, Kam Fong played the role, and James MacArthur as Dano was perceived more of the second guy on the team. But in today's more diverse era, Kim may have a more prominent role than Fong did.
