America Ferrera Joins 'The Good Wife,' 'The Game' Grabs Record Ratings and More

by Chris Harnick, posted Jan 12th 2011 6:20PM
America Ferrera'Ugly Betty' star America Ferrera is joining 'The Good Wife.' But, it's not as a new lawyer or poor soul of a client: Ferrera is joining the cast as a romantic interest for Eli (Alan Cumming).

According to Entertainment Weekly, Ferrera will play Natalie, a graduate student who catches Eli's eye. The Emmy-winner will appear in an episode next month along with 'Seinfeld' veteran Jerry Stiller. This is Ferrera's first TV gig since the end of 'Ugly Betty.'

"It's thrilling to have two actors who combine such dramatic and comedic ability," Robert King, co-creator and executive producer of 'The Good Wife,' said in a statement. "We've been watching and loving America for years now on 'Ugly Betty,' and it'll be fantastic to see her take on a completely different role - especially one that puts her across from Alan Cumming."

Stiller will play a judge who has a problem staying awake while on the bench. His character will preside over one of Diane's (Christine Baranski) cases. So far Stiller is just contracted for one episode.

"And Jerry Stiller is our dream judge," he said. "It was great when we got to stop saying 'We need a Jerry Stiller-type in the role' and just got Jerry Stiller."

Robot Geoff Gets Dirty for America Ferrera on 'Late Late Show' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Jul 21st 2010 9:30AM
Robot Geoff Gets Dirty for America Ferrera on 'Late Late Show'America Ferrera and Craig Ferguson discussed robot Geoff's gross habits on 'The Late Late Show' (weeknights, 12:37AM ET on CBS), and likened him to a dog. But, let's be clear, not Ferrera's dog. "Buddy" is even worse.

"I like it when he goes, 'Oh yeah,'" said Ferrera of the host's robot sidekick, mimicking one of his rather uncouth gestures. "That is really dirty."

"That's like when your dog does something disgusting," said Ferguson. "Knock it off, [or] I'll take you to the vet!"

The host then asked the actress about her golden retriever: "Does he do disgusting stuff when you have people around?"
Replied Ferrera, "Yeah, [Buddy] tries to hump a lot of people."

A really wonderful thing happened at the end of the series finale of 'Ugly Betty.' Betty Suarez got a new beginning. In the tradition of many television series finales, there were many loose ends tied up, and because 'Betty' was more comedy than drama, it only stood to reason that they were mostly happy endings.

All they needed was Liza Minnelli to sing about it, but alas, there was no musical number to sum it all up. However, there was plenty of character development and plot turns. For more on that and how even Halston got a fashionable farewell, read on after the jump. However, if you don't want to know, consider this a SPOILER ALERT!

Top 20 Funniest 'Ugly Betty' Quotes

by Sharon Knolle, posted Apr 13th 2010 4:00PM
Ugly BettyWhat will we miss most about 'Ugly Betty'? (Besides Betty Suarez's once-dreadful fashion blunders, now a thing of the past, thanks to four years among New York's fashion elite.) The witty repartee and casual cruelty of Mode players like uber-bitch Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams), sharp-tongued assistant editor Marc St. James (Michael Urie) and bitchy bimbo Amanda (Becki Newton).

Betty (America Ferrera) got off quite a few clever retorts of her own, and how could we not include her boss (and mate for life?) Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius), who often opened his mouth without thinking, to hilarious results. Or what about her always-fabulous nephew, Justin (Marc Indelicato)?

In honor of tomorrow night's series finale (10PM ET on ABC), we count down 20 of 'Ugly Betty's' best zingers.

by Sharon Knolle, posted Apr 12th 2010 12:40PM
America Ferrera's star-making role on 'Ugly Betty' -- which has its series finale this Wednesday (10PM on ABC) -- was inspired by one of the world's most-popular telenovelas. Now, the Wrap is reporting that Ferrera will follow 'Betty' with another telenovela -- this time, on MTV.

'Pedro and Maria' will be the cable network's first telenovela, and its first truly interactive scripted series that will allow viewers to vote via Facebook and Twitter on the storyline. Ferrera is developing the bilingual Romeo and Juliet-esque series alongside Tony winner Quiara Alegria Hudes ('In the Heights').

'Saturday Night Live' Doesn't Think Gabourey Sidibe Is Too Fat

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 1st 2010 8:02PM
Gabourey SidibeIt's interesting that in E! Online's announcement about 'Precious' star Gabourey Sidibe being asked to host an upcoming episode of 'Saturday Night Live,' their writer referenced a couple of disrespectful quotes Howard Stern had made about Sidibe in early March. Stern makes a living by saying things that push the envelope of good taste, but these words seem to have resonated a bit more than usual.

"There's the most enormous, fat black chick I've ever seen," he said. "She is enormous. Everyone's pretending she's a part of show business and she's never going to be in another movie." He even took on Oprah Winfrey, who's certainly no stranger to weight struggles or lasting success. "Oprah's another liar, a filthy liar. She's telling an enormous woman the size of a planet that she's going to have a career."

Ugly Betty, Betty flashes a stranger'Ugly Betty' (Wed., 10PM ET on ABC) is determined to go out with a bang. Or if not a bang, with every sort of gratuitous skin shot humanly possible before the show leaves the air for good.

Yes, folks, on last night's episode, Betty flashed her girls to a stranger. Well, she thought it was a stranger, but it turned out to be even more awkward than if she'd flashed a stranger. Super awkward.

America Ferrera: 'Ugly Betty' Cancellation "Wasn't a Complete Surprise"

by AOL TV Staff, posted Mar 22nd 2010 3:00PM
America FerreraLast January, 'Ugly Betty' fans were outraged when ABC officially pulled the plug on the Emmy-winning series.

Two months later, does star America Ferrera feel the same way? Sort of.

In an exclusive interview with PopEater, Ferrera said that she felt "a lot of things" after finding out that the show had been canceled. "Did I want the show to be over? Not necessarily, but it wasn't a complete surprise because the ratings were turning south, but we still had our very loyal audience," she said.

ABC cancels Ugly Betty

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 27th 2010 4:24PM
Ugly BettyYou really can't say you didn't see this coming. ABC has announced that they have canceled Ugly Betty. The final episode will air this spring. ABC says in a statement that "we've mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty's last season."

I really loved the first season of Ugly Betty, and I continued to watch it into the second season, but somewhere along the line I just lost interest in it. It wasn't the cast, I think it was just that plots kept spiraling into directions I didn't think were interesting (or funny). But now that the show is ending I kinda feel bad about not watching it the last couple of seasons.

So I guess this is the part where we all list our predictions on how the show will end, who Betty will end up, what will happen to Mode, and all that. At least they know the show is ending and can plan a good final episode.

Brian Stokes Mitchell to appear on Ugly Betty

by Brad Trechak, posted Jan 27th 2010 10:03AM
Brian Stokes MitchellDespite low ratings, Ugly Betty is pushing ownward. Now, Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell will have a potentially recurring role on Ugly Betty as a former lover of Wilhelmia (played by Vanessa Williams) who is apparently a Joe Six Pack rather than an elegant charmer.

Seriously, I've seen Mr. Stokes Mitchell (or it is just Mr. Mitchell?) perform on Broadway and he's very good. His voice has this unmistakable deep, dulcet tone that would translate well to a television romantic lead. Mitchell has appeared on television before as Dr. Jackpot Jackson in Trapper John, M.D.

If Ugly Betty gets a makeover ... will she still be Betty?

by Allison Waldman, posted Jul 31st 2009 7:00PM

If they give the title character a radical change, as sources are reportedly seriously considering at ABC's Ugly Betty, does that include a title change to reflect the alteration? In other words, will Ugly Betty be the same show if Betty becomes a beauty?

Mike Ausiello is reporting that ABC has focus grouped a couple of scenes from the upcoming season in which Betty is remodeled to look more fashionable in the fashion world. As Mode's new associate features editor, she opts for some fancy new outfits and a less eclectic, eccentric look. She's also had her hair, brows and makeup redone ... no doubt after a trip to Hilda's beauty salon.

Emmy Wish List: Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

by Mike Moody, posted Jul 15th 2009 2:31PM
toni collette united states of taraLet's be honest. There are really only four or five real contenders for this category, and most of them were nominated last year. But it's not like the talented Tina Fey (30 Rock), Mary Louise-Parker (Weeds), Julia Louise-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine) and America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) don't deserve the recognition. They all fit the bill, and most of their shows were damn good this year.

I'd be happy to see any one of them go home with the gold on Emmy night. I'd also love to see some recognition for Christina Applegate's work in Samantha Who?, a great show that got the ax earlier this year.
