We've reached the time of year when people talk about all the ways they're going to change in the new year. They want to lose weight, swear less, spend more time with friends, etc. But we all know what happens to New Year's resolutions... they're usually broken or discarded by the time you trudge to work after the holidays are over.

So the folks here at TV Squad decided to do something a little bit different; for the most part, instead of giving ourselves resolutions to follow, we've decided give the powers that be running the various networks our wish list of what we're looking to see on TV in 2011. We're very generously giving our resolutions over to the TV folks, hoping to benefit the greater good of TV fans anywhere. If any of these come to pass, you'll know who you can thank.

Something strange happened after watching a recent episode of 'The Good Wife.'

Following 'Cleaning House,' the fourth episode of the show's second season, an overwhelming feeling of pride swept over me. A TV show that I have no connection to whatsoever -- besides being a viewer -- filled me with immense pride. Why? Well, 'The Good Wife' is nothing short of amazing.

When a show can easily blend the generic nature of a procedural with weekly character development and overarching plots, it deserves to be called amazing -- perhaps even the best drama on network TV. (Our own Mo Ryan named it among her top 10 best shows of 2010.)

If I had actually put down bets on my Emmy predictions, I would have lost my shirt, and maybe even my pants. And I still would have been pretty happy about it.

Why? Because when I made those predictions, I did them with the jaundiced eye of a guy who's seen the Academy go with the safe and sane too many times. For instance, in any world that made sense, Jon Cryer wouldn't have been my supporting comedy actor pick over Neil Patrick Harris, Chris Colfer and the 'Modern Family' trio. But the Academy loves repeat winners, so I was resigned to the fact that Cryer was going to win again.

So I was pleasantly surprised when Eric Stonestreet's name was called at the Emmy Awards last night. And I continued to be surprised as the the names of newcomers and first-timers were called for many of the major categories. Yes, new names abounded at the Emmys, and hopefully, it's a harbinger of what we might see in the years to come.

'The Good Wife' star Archie Panjabi cemented her status as the year's breakout television star with her surprise Emmy win in the Best Supporting Drama Actress category.

She beat out heavy hitters like her 'Good Wife' co-star Christine Baranski, 'Mad Men' nominees Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks and TV veteran Sharon Gless.

"When I started in the business in England, just getting a job was a dream," she said while accepting the trophy. "And to receive an Emmy now is just beyond my wildest dreams ... Working on 'The Good Wife' for me is like a dream come true."

She went on to thank "Angelina," whom USA Today confirmed to be her 'Mighty Heart' co-star Angelina Jolie.

Panjabi won for playing the tough, mysterious investigator Kalinda on 'The Good Wife'; it's her first major American TV role. She's best known for her roles in 'East Is East' and 'Bend It Like Beckham.'

For the next few days, I'll be listing the Emmy nominees in the major categories and giving you picks and possible dark horses. Feel free to agree, disagree, and make your own picks in the comments.

Who will win: The Academy just loves, loves, loves Christine Baranski. Sure, she only won once, for 'Cybil' in 1995, but she's been nominated six times since then, including twice this year (she got a guest actress nod for playing Leonard's mom on 'The Big Bang Theory'). And now that she's nominated in the drama category for the first time, they'll jump at the chance to give her the statuette. Even though she did a good job as ice queen law firm honcho Diane Lockhart in 'The Good Wife,' the Academy will likely just give her the award because she's an old friend.

Like a true character actor, Brie knows that the physicality of her roles is what helps her distinguish between the two. "Trudy has a different walk, she has a different voice. Annie carries herself differently, walks faster, does some things higher pitched, you know," she told TV Squad earlier this year.
