Top 11 in '11: TV's Funniest Women

by AOL TV Staff, posted Nov 30th 2011 12:00PM
tv's 11 funniest ladies in comedyThis has been a banner year for women in TV. Two new female-fronted comedies, 'New Girl' and '2 Broke Girls,' broke out of the fall pack, and hilarious females continued to steal scenes on veteran shows like 'Community' and 'Cougar Town.' And who can forget Melissa McCarthy's triumphant victory at the Emmys?

To celebrate the Fabulous Female Laff Riot of 2011 (bear with us: that's only a working title), AOL TV is counting down the Top 11 women in TV comedy.

But first, a programming note: please try not to freak out when you don't see Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on the list. They belong to the Hall of Fame, and our list is devoted to those witty women who have come into their own during the last year.

'Awkward' Finale: Did Jenna Choose the Right Guy? And About the Letter...

by Jean Bentley, posted Sep 28th 2011 9:00AM
AwkwardThe first season of MTV's 'Awkward' didn't go out with a whimper, that's for sure.

The hilarious high school show about an outsider girl trying to decide between the two adorable, popular guys in her love love triangle (first world problems, right?) while also trying to figure out who sent her a mean-spirited "Carefrontation" letter at the beginning of the school year solved both mysteries before the end of Tuesday's hourlong finale. But let's get to the most shocking revelation first: Did she choose Jake or Matty?

Though both guys gave us plenty of reasons to root for them throughout the season, my heart, like Jenna's, was decidedly on Team Matty. He meant well, he just didn't realize how poorly he was treating Jenna. He always cared for her -- it's not his fault he's a teenage boy who doesn't know how to deal with his feelings! Although Jake is adorable, I couldn't get over Matty's swoon-worthy gestures to show Jenna how much he cared, and also his dreamy hair. Jake, on the other hand, I thought deserved to stay in the friend zone.

'Awkward.' Star Ashley Rickards Talks Finale Secrets, Jake and Matty Love Triangle and the Carefrontation Letter

by Laura Prudom, posted Sep 27th 2011 11:00AM
Awkward Jenna HamiltonOnce in a rare while, a new teen comedy will come along that transcends clichés, ignores the urge to talk down to its audience, and leaves lazy dialogue for the laugh-track crowd. On the big screen, we were recently treated to 'Mean Girls' and 'Easy A,' but we've been long-overdue for a comedy the caliber of 'Awkward.' on TV.

The writing is razor sharp, the emotions are relatable, and every character is so delightfully weird (in a believably teenage way), that it's impossible not to fall in love with them. But it's not a broadcast network that can boast of discovering this diamond in the rough -- it's MTV. Say what you will about 'Jersey Shore' and the failed translation of 'Skins,' I'm here to tell you that 'Awkward.' could go toe to toe with 'Modern Family' (or any other Emmy-winning comedy) and elicit more laughs in a half hour than anything the big four networks could offer, and not just in the teen demo.

Ahead of tonight's season finale, AOL TV caught up with Ashley Rickards, star of the underrated comedy, to get her thoughts on the show's important message, the trials of a love triangle, and what fans can look forward to in season two. Mild spoilers ahead.

What To Watch: TV Picks for Sept 26 - Oct 2

by Laura Prudom, posted Sep 25th 2011 2:00PM
Terra NovaNote: Premieres are still debuting, so I'd like to emphasize the "picks" portion of the title and remind you that I'm only spotlighting a selection of the week's most noteworthy offerings. For a full listing of new and returning shows and their timeslots, check out our fall premiere grid or alphabetized list to plan your schedule.

'Terra Nova' (8PM ET, Fox)
series premiere
The long-awaited, super-hyped and mega-expensive sci-fi drama finally lands on Fox this week, but is it worthy of the buzz? Surprisingly, yes. Some of the dialogue is leaden and lord knows how many times we've seen the "obnoxious teenager" archetype on genre shows, but I have a certain fondness for "event" TV, and this action-packed premiere is engaging enough and sets up plenty of potential mysteries for the season ahead. Gather your whole family for the spectacle.

'Hart of Dixie' (9PM ET, The CW) series premiere
Following the return of 'Gossip Girl,' this 'Everwood'-esque drama brings a little heart to The CW (pardon the pun) and gave me a serious case of the warm fuzzies. If you can get over the (admittedly large) hurdle of buying Rachel Bilson as a doctor, you'll probably appreciate its guileless, small town charm. Few shows can replicate the fond, nostalgic vibe that used to be The WB's stock in trade with shows like 'Gilmore Girls' and '7th Heaven,' so I'll admit that I'm kind of addicted. Whether it's more realistic than dinosaurs, though ... you'll have to draw your own conclusions.

Jenna Loses a Friend on 'Awkward.' (VIDEO)

by Catherine Lawson, posted Sep 7th 2011 8:40AM
'Awkward.'The life of a teenage girl can be fraught with difficulties, which is why a girl's best friend is so important. This week on 'Awkward.' (Tues., 11PM ET on MTV) Jenna made a big mistake at a house party, which threatened her friendship with Tamara.

Tamara was mad because she found Jenna making out with Ricky Schwartz at a house party. Never mind that Jenna only did it because she'd been drugged by her mom's best friend, some hurts just can't be forgiven.

To show just how much Jenna's betrayal had wounded her, Tamara smashed her BFF photo frame and handed the broken remains back to her (now ex-)BFF.

And then the kicker: "Jenna Hamilton, you're dead to me."

Beau Mirchoff Talks Streaking in a Sock on 'Awkward.' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Sep 1st 2011 3:00PM
Beau Mirchoff of 'Awkward' on 'Good Day LA' The title of MTV's new show 'Awkward.' applies to more than just its lead character Jenna Hamilton's struggles through high school. According to Beau Mirchoff, who plays Jenna's obsession Matty McKibben, he's also had to shoot some particularly awkward scenes. Thursday on 'Good Day L.A.' (weekdays, 9AM PT on Fox), he talked about having to streak with several extras wearing nothing but a sock.

Mirchoff mentioned that the show can get away with being a little risque since it airs at 11PM. That included the perhaps unintentional Red Hot Chili Peppers homage where he had go streaking. "There was a group of us, like ten of us, extras and me, and we all had to wear a sock," he said. "That's all we wore."

Catching Up With the Best New Comedy of the Year: MTV's 'Awkward.'

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 1st 2011 12:00PM
Surely this wasn't MTV's goal, but the network's excellent new(ish) comedy 'Awkward.' puts me in a nostalgic frame of mind.

Just as today's twentysomethings yearned to bask once again in the glow of the Nickelodeon shows they watched in their tween years (and that prompted TeenNick to unleash its successful "The '90s Are All That" rerun block two months ago), I've been missing the glory days of the WB and the early CW for a while now.

Back in the '90s and early aughts, those networks gave us plucky, verbally dextrous, sarcastic heroines in slightly dorky clothes who studied hard or solved crimes or fought vampires, young women who wanted the guy but didn't want to lose their self-respect and whose neuroses only made them more appealing.

And that's pretty much what 'Awkward' is, but in brisk, sitcom form and with more hilarious euphemisms for sex. It may not sound professional, but somehow it feels appropriate to say that I totally have a crush on 'Awkward.'

Jenna Reluctantly Plays 'Dead Stacy' in DUI Event for Valerie on 'Awkward.' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 31st 2011 7:37AM
'Awkward.' - 'Episode 7'Desi Lydic is officially the breakout star of 'Awkward.' (Tue., 11PM ET on MTV) after this week's episode.

The borderline-crazy school counselor she portrays took center stage with her CRASH'D program that saw her select Jenna to play the coveted "Dead Stacy" role, and she couldn't have been more loopy or hysterical.

It was a role her mother had played back when she was in high school, so finally maybe Jenna was doing something her mother could be proud of her for. Or, could at least say Jenna was almost as good as she was in the role.

When Valerie (Lydic) pretended to walk down the stairs through the window when Jenna and Jake were talking, and he was fake choking her, it was awesome. When she held up a sign to Jenna telling her she had 911 on speed dial, just in case Jake was really going to kill her outside the guidance counselor's office in the middle of the school day, I fell in love with her character.

Jenna Finds Herself in a Love Triangle on 'Awkward.' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 24th 2011 6:00AM
'Awkward.' - 'Queen Bee-atches'Does it mean that I'm heartless because I was half-convinced Sadie was faking those tears for her mom's benefit on this week's 'Awkward.' (Tue., 11PM ET on MTV)? I was sure that once mom left, Sadie would reveal a stash of cookies she'd stolen and start scarfing them down.

But while we took a deeper look into the self-hatred that fuels Sadie, thanks to Jenna getting her hands on Sadie's food journal/diary, there was a whole separate drama going on that Jenna wasn't even aware of ... and yet she was at the center of it.

It created a new tone to the show, as we shifted away from Jenna-centric storytelling to let her supporting cast breathe a little bit, and it was nice to see them interacting without her.

Jenna Confronts And Then Undresses Her Stalker on 'Awkward' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 17th 2011 3:56AM
'Awkward' - 'Jenna Lives'It was a quiet week on 'Awkward' (Tue., 11PM ET on MTV), at least as far as Jenna's situation with Matty goes. We don't mind a slow burn on that front, though, when we get fun diversions like Jenna's is-he-or-isn't-he stalker.

We have a feeling we haven't seen the last of the creepy guy who feigned innocence, and insisted Jenna Lives was the name of his band.

He was selling t-shirts with this emblazoned on the front of them, which Jenna was understandably upset by. She's still trying to live down the fact that everyone thinks she attempted suicide. High school's hard enough already.

'Awkward'On this week's 'Awkward' (Tue., 11PM ET on MTV), Ming's worried that she's been downgraded "to third-wheel status," but just as Jenna starts to apologize, Ming discovers she's got bigger fish to fry.

Jenna's Party Debut Is a Bit 'Awkward,' But Leads to a Connection With Jake (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 3rd 2011 6:19AM
'Awkward' - 'The Way We Weren't'Teenagers don't know how to communicate, and teenage boys may be the worst of all. Matty is certainly keeping Jenna all mixed up on 'Awkward' (Tue., 11PM ET on MTV). Sure, they first hooked up at summer camp and he told her they'd have to keep it on the down low.

And while they're still having sex, she thought it was a great sign of progress when he invited her to a party. Only the party was a little more casual than she thought it would be, and Sadie was there making things awful for her and Teresa.

While Matty revealed to the audience that he does care for her, he can't seem to tell her in any meaningful way. That's why he may be losing her to Jake, who's a more independent person far less concerned with what other people think. But he's also dating Sadie's best friend Lissa.
