TV's Greatest Rivalries: 'Survivor,' 'Dynasty,' 'True Blood' & More

by Maggie Furlong & Jean Bentley, posted Jun 22nd 2011 9:00AM
We used to watch 'The Real World' and 'Road Rules' religiously, and then MTV combined those powerfully awesome forces to create 'The Challenge.'

Well now we're old(er) and we're still inexplicably excited for their latest fight-to-the-death challenge, the series' 11th incarnation, 'The Challenge: Rivals' (premieres Wed., June 22, 10PM ET on MTV).

The Challenge: Rivals

Of course, looking through their slideshow of supposedly epic rivalries, only a few familiar faces from the old days truly stand out: Wes and Kenny, Adam and CT, Johnny and Tyler, Nehemiah and Evan, Paula and Evelyn and even Robin and Aneesa. We're not saying the rest of the eight teams battling it out aren't vicious (we know better than that), they're just not sparking any vivid memories.

So we thought we'd remind TV lovers what a true battle royale looks like -- here, our list of TV's Greatest Rivalries.

Tiffani Thiessen Had an Anthony Weiner-Style Stalker (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 16th 2011 6:00PM
Tiffani Thiessen on 'The Talk'Tiffani Thiessen revealed Thursday on 'The Talk' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS) that she once received a nude photo from a man, Anthony Weiner–style, but wouldn't say who that person was. She did say he was a famous baseball player, more famous now than he was in the mid-'90s, when the man sent her a full-body nude photo of himself in an attempt to woo her into dating him.

Thiessen said she was talking about the incident for the first time in public, and hadn't even told her husband about it. "He's even more famous now, but he was somewhat famous then," said Thiessen of the man. "[He] sent me a photo, a head shot at first, asking me out. And then I guess because I didn't respond, he followed up with another sort of picture."

Thiessen said it happened while she was still on 'Beverly Hills, 90210' and that the player in question is still playing. That's as far as she would go, but Holly Robinson Peete vowed 'The View' team would crack the case. Hopefully Thiessen didn't keep the photos.

TV 101: Summer Madness

by Dr. Ryan Vaughan, PhD (no, seriously), posted Jun 9th 2011 2:00PM
True BloodThe old Fresh Prince summer anthem, "Summertime," encapsulated summer for an entire generation. With all its "frontin'" and "maxin'" - terms long ago replaced by "chillaxin'" and "being lazy" -- the song embodied notions of breezy whimsy, lazing the days into nights with friends and family while touting summer as a "natural aphrodisiac."

All of this is true, but there seems to be something missing from Mr. Smith's idyllic recollection of a very '90s summer: television. I know it's probably difficult to come up with a rhyme for "True Blood Season Four Premiere," but that notwithstanding, for how many of us is television a part of the true summer experience?

For most of my childhood, television took a Fresh Prince approach to the summer months. After working hard to keep me entertained through the fall and spring, shows would take the summer to unwind and come up with new, innovative ways to showcase Daisy Duke's ass.

Luke Perry on His '90210' Hair: 'I Had the Coolest Hair on Television, Flat-Out'

by Jean Bentley, posted Jan 31st 2011 3:30PM
Luke PerryBrenda or Kelly?

Though Luke Perry has a diverse body of work spanning more than two decades, that's one question he'll never be able to dodge. Luckily, Perry's a good sport about his 'Beverly Hills, 90210' days and indulged us in answering a few burning questions when we caught up with him last week to discuss his Hallmark Movie Channel film, 'Goodnight for Justice.'

Once and for all, Perry is quite decidedly on Team Kelly. "I've firmly come down on the side of Kelly on this a number of times," he told us. "She had more money, she was less problematic, I didn't have to worry about her brother kicking my ass, you know?"

Since Jennifer Aniston recently confessed that she actually hated her famous Rachel haircut, we wondered how Perry felt about Dylan McKay's pompadour.

"I'll tell you what now: I had the coolest hair on television, flat-out. I did it on purpose, for a reason, and I have no regrets about that. Sorry that you felt bad, Jen, and stop picking loser boyfriends, and you'll be fine," he joked.

Ian Ziering Goes From '90210' to ... Cosmetics Salesman?

by Joel Keller, posted Oct 27th 2010 11:45AM
Aren't you always curious to see what your favorite TV stars of the past are up to now? Of course you do; if we didn't, VH1 would cease to exist. But it's even more fun to accidentally come across a story about a former TV star as you cruise the web trying to find a restaurant name or just getting some news about a place where you used to live.

So when I came across the story of 'Beverly Hills 90210' star Ian Ziering visiting a Morristown, NJ beauty salon, I got that tingly "oh my bleeping God" feeling I experience when I know I'm about to read something that's going to make my day.

Then I actually read the article. Consider my mind officially blown.

Ziering was at the salon to make a presentation to the staff about a line of cosmetics he was promoting.

Yes, you read that right: Ian Ziering is now a cosmetics salesman. But, wait -- it gets much, much better.

Is College Too Risque for Network TV?

by Stephanie Earp, posted Sep 7th 2010 8:00PM

It seems like no matter how many years have passed since I last made my way to a classroom, early September makes me want to buy penny loafers and Trapper-Keepers. The fact that I live in a university town probably has something to do with it. For the last week, it's been an endless parade of moving vans, stressed-out parents and loud porch parties. I suppose it's a sign of my age that I now relate more to the parents than the kids -- at least, I feel for them, helicoptering around the dumpy student houses, having no idea the insane things their kids will be getting up to once they head back to the highway.

On the surface, it all looks so collegial and lovely but the truth is, the first year of university -- and especially the first few months -- can be a pretty dark time. For a lot of kids, it's their first exposure to binge drinking, blacking out, date rape, teachers that don't know you exist and doing your own laundry. And despite the potential for drama, it's not something you often see on television.

Happy 90210 Day: What's Your Favorite Scene From 'Beverly Hills, 90210'?

by Kelly Woo, posted Sep 2nd 2010 10:15AM
Today is 9/02/10, making it the perfect day to celebrate all things 'Beverly Hills, 90210' (we can throw in The CW's updated version, '90210,' too).

You can join the Facebook page (of course) for 90210 Day, which claims that President Barack Obama will officially recognize this date as "International Beverly Hills, 90210 Day" if it signs up 10,000 fans (so far, less than 200 -- sad!).

Regardless of whether 90210 Day get the presidential seal of approval, we can still honor one of the soapiest, cheesiest and addictive shows on television.

Look! It's Young Ryan Seacrest Acting on 'Beverly Hills, 90210'

by Chris Harnick, posted Aug 31st 2010 4:35PM
Ryan SeacrestOnce upon a time there was a young man with frosted blond hair. This man eventually would become famous, rich and powerful for simply being himself. Who is this man? Ryan Seacrest.

Check out Seacrest in this video clip from 'Beverly Hills, 90210.' It's from 2000, two years before 'American Idol' began, and he's playing a game show host/himself.

In the episode, 'The Final Proof,' Kelly and Matt are set to go on a couples game show, but after Kelly gets too nervous Donna has to step in. Much to Kelly's surprise, Donna does surprisingly well on the 'Newlyweds'-esque game show.

ABC Making Tori Spelling the Next Queen of Daytime TV?

by Kim Potts, posted Apr 21st 2010 9:45AM
Donna Martin graduates ... to daytime TV talk show host?

That's ABC's plan, according to the Los Angeles Times, which reports that ABC is developing a daytime talk-show for 'Beverly Hills, 90210' and 'Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood' star Tori Spelling and a male co-host to be named later.

Though the new series is in the early rounds of development (i.e., there's a chance it'll never even make it to the pilot stage), the Times reports that the network wants to pair Spelling with a "BFF"-type guy, someone who would help her provide a "'Will & Grace' vibe" for the show.

Hmmm ... 'Will & Grace' alum Sean Hayes? Nah, he probably wouldn't do a talk show. Neil Patrick Harris? Ditto. Rupert Everett? Maybe. 'Sex and the City' star Mario Cantone, who does frequent segments on 'The View' and is hilarious? And why do we have a feeling that Perez Hilton has already been on the phone to producers to pitch himself as Spelling's BFF candidate?

The Times suggests that finding a co-host for Spelling could be so entertaining that the search could spark a companion reality show. Indeed.

Shannen Doherty Talks 'Dancing' Elimination Conspiracy Theories (VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Apr 1st 2010 1:05PM
Shannen DohertyShannen Doherty, the first celebrity given the boot on 'Dancing With the Stars,' came face-to-face with 'Dancing's' Carrie Ann Inaba on 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated).

"I have to tell you, after all the seasons we've done, you're elimination was the most surprising," Inaba told Doherty and her 'Dancing' partner Mark Ballas. Inaba was so shocked, she said she text messaged somebody asking, "How did that happen?" while she was on set. Regis Philbin, always quick with a comment, informed Inaba that it happened because "the judges didn't help them!"

Philbin tried to get the 'Beverly Hills, 90210' bad girl to gossip, but she wasn't falling for it. Bravo, Shannen.

New TV on DVD Releases This Week

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 1st 2010 6:03PM
The Price Is Right logoHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

It's not every week that you see four different DVD sets for game shows released, but that's what we have this week: "Best Of" sets for 'The Price is Right', 'Password', and 'Match Game '73', as well as a special set for the Richard Dawson 'Family Feud' episodes. I actually might buy the first three (not really a big 'Family Feud' guy). Having DVDs for classic episodes of those three game shows might be fun.

I'd like to see someone come out with a sampler DVD set of short-lived game shows or even well-known game shows that will never get their own full sets.

  • 'Batman: The Brave and the Bold' - Vol. 3
  • 'Beverly Hills, 90210' - Season 9
  • 'Doctor Who' - The End of Time, The Waters of Mars, and The Complete Specials
  • 'Dynasty' - Season 4, Vol. 2
