A Big Baby on 'Modern Family' (VIDEO)
by Oliver Miller, posted May 5th 2010 11:35PM
No one likes getting stuck next to a crying baby on a plane. On 'Modern Family' (Wed., 9PM ET on ABC), a father comes up with a novel solution to this problem. Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) decides to completely exhaust his adopted daughter Lily before going on a flight. His partner Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) is there to handle any potential problems with this idea. While discussing his plan, Mitchell relates the story of the last time he got stuck next to a crying baby on an airplane. Of course, it turns out that the big baby was Cameron, who spent the flight upset over the fact that they couldn't get tickets to the show 'Billy Elliot.' "Oh, I get it, you're talking about me," Cameron says. "...Very funny."
Working Title Films That Would (And Wouldn't) Work on the Small Screen
by Aimee Deeken, posted Apr 1st 2010 8:00AM
Thanks to the launch of Working Title Television (WTTV) last month, NBC Universal will glean a few TV-show ideas from movies created by its subsidiary Working Title Films. The UK production company is behind such Oscar crushes as 'Atonement,' Frost/Nixon' and 'A Serious Man,' and fan-faves 'Nanny McPhee,' 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and 'Pride & Prejudice.'NBC Universal (which could use some fresh programming following the prime-time Leno debacle) will distribute WTTV content, starting with the comedy 'Love Bites' -- a "romantic anthology" reminiscent of Working Title Films' 'Love Actually' -- starring Jordana Spiro ('My Boys') and 'Ugly Betty's' Becki Newton. Execs in the joint venture announced last month they will also adapt the 'Bridget Jones' franchise for the small screen.
Having looked at the rest of Working Title's 100-plus film repertoire, we've got some thoughts of our own on three movies that would make good episodic programming -- and two that wouldn't.
Neil Patrick Harris saves the Tony Awards
by Allison Waldman, posted Jun 8th 2009 12:02PM
If you had DVR'd the Tony Awards on CBS last night, or switched off the set after Elton John's Billy Elliot, The Musical won the final big award of the night -- Best Musical -- you missed the best thing in the entire show. In a word, Neil Patrick Harris. At a few minutes after 11 o'clock, Tony host Neil Patrick Harris wrapped up the broadcast, but instead of just saying goodnight and urging viewers to go see a Broadway show, Neil did a musical number and it was the high point of the night. In true Barney Stinson style, the How I Met Your Mother star (and sure bet Emmy nominee), performed a song that was as good as any Billy Crystal Oscar opening. Funny, snarky and pointed, it really skewered the Tonys, almost like a Mad magazine parody.
