Bob Costas Talks About His Interview With Jerry Sandusky on 'Daily Show' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 2nd 2011 3:30AM
Bob Costas, 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart'If you were nearly dumbfounded by Jerry Sandusky's telephone interview with Bob Costas, you weren't alone. On 'The Daily Show' (Weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central), Costas admitted he was surprised Sandusky's lawyer suggested it, and even more flabbergasted by how raw it turned out to be.

In an era where interviews are so packaged, and the interview subject is so prepared as to be almost scripted, this interview was a real anomaly. Both Costas and Jon Stewart talked about Sandusky's delay in definitively saying "no" to the question of him being sexually attracted to young boys, but he was very quick to say he wasn't a pedophile.

Bob Costas Says Jerry Sandusky Interview Was Unplanned (VIDEO)

by Catherine Lawson, posted Nov 16th 2011 7:50AM
Monday night Bob Costas interviewed former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky about his alleged inappropriate contact with young boys and the subsequent 40-count criminal indictment he now faces. The interview on NBC news magazine show 'Rock Center' took many by complete surprise, including Costas.

Speaking on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' Tuesday, Costas said that he was in a Manhattan TV studio prepping for an interview with Sandusky's attorney, Joseph Amendola, when, "no more than ten, fifteen minutes before the cameras were to roll, Amendola says, 'What if I can get Sandusky on the phone?'"

Jon Stewart Presents the Defense Jerry Sandusky Should Have Used (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Nov 16th 2011 3:30AM
'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart'After hearing Jerry Sandusky being interviewed by Bob Costas about his alleged inappropriate contact with young boys, Jon Stewart was stunned on 'The Daily Show' (Weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central) by his weak defense.

"Sandusky: You're a defensive coordinator," he said. "You should have been able to coordinate a better defense."

When asked by Costas if he was attracted to young boys, the former Penn State coach didn't vehemently deny it. Instead, he gave a meandering response that did deny attraction, but not as definitively as it probably should have. So Stewart presented a defense Sandusky should maybe have implemented two decades ago.

Jerry Sandusky Tells Bob Costas: 'I Shouldn't Have Showered With Those Kids' (VIDEO)

by Catherine Lawson, posted Nov 15th 2011 6:55AM
'Rock Center'Last night while ABC aired its exclusive interview with Gabrielle Giffords, NBC's 'Rock Center' aired its own exclusive as Bob Costas talked to former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky and his attorney. Discussing allegations against him of sexual abuse dating back to 1994, Sandusky -- who has been charged on a 40-count indictment -- protested his innocence.

The interview made for uncomfortable viewing at times, with Sandusky admitting that he had, at least, made some highly questionable choices in his interaction with children. When Costas asked if he was "completely innocent and falsely accused in every aspect?" Sandusky replied "I have done some of those things. I have horsed around with kids. I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and I have touched their leg. Without," he added, "intent of sexual contact."

What's Ann Curry got against Bob Costas? While reporting on SkyRider seats, a new kind of compact seat designed to pack even more fliers into planes, Curry takes the opportunity to make fun of colleague Costas for his height (or lack thereof) on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC).

TV's Six Most Annoying Talk Show Hosts

by Allison Waldman, posted Jul 1st 2010 12:00PM
larry_king_cnn_deskTwo recent news items got us thinking about TV's most annoying talk show hosts. First, Larry King announced his exit from 'Larry King Live' this fall, although he will continue doing specials. Second, Showtime is reportedly interested in Stephen A. Smith. They want the basketball reporter and New York radio jock-talker to host a late night talk show.

Smith, who has already failed with a chat show on ESPN, is not a good candidate as a host because he's a grating personality. So are these people who we think about the six most annoying talk show hosts. Here's who made the list and the why ...

Bob Costas Talks Tiger Woods' Return to Golf (VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Apr 6th 2010 9:55AM
Bob CostasBob Costas stopped by 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon' (weeknights at 12:37AM ET on NBC) and weighed in on Tiger Woods' road to recovery. The veteran sportscaster said given Woods' situation, yesterday's press conference was the best the golfer could do.

"If he's going to go forward, he was about as forthright as somebody could be in that situation today," Costas said.

However, Costas dispelled the idea that Woods picked the Masters Golf Tournament because he was sure to win it. "I think the main reason he chose the Masters is that it's the most controlled environment in all of sports, not just golf, in all of sports."

Costas Closes Olympics with "the Always Enjoyable Giant Inflatable Beaver"

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 1st 2010 8:30PM
Bob Costas is a broadcasting legend and rightfully so. He has a commanding presence and an intellectual curiosity that can never be fed. He has conducted probing and thoughtful interviews with just about everyone who ever meant anything to the news and sports world. But now, he will be forever remembered for uttering a phrase that united the world.

Costas uttered this now immortal phrase during the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics last night, and it set the Internet afire with its "beaver" and "inflatable" Google keyword alerts. It not only appeared all over Twitter, but it now has its own Facebook page with 1,500 members and growing. Someone out there, a lucky businessman, is putting it on a T-shirt, and the world will become just a little bit better for it.

Lindsey Vonn Lands Bit Role on 'Law & Order'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 1st 2010 2:09PM
Lindsey_Vonn_cropped_head Was that a real moment between Bob Costas and Lindsey Vonn during the NBC coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics on Saturday night ... or just a typical cross promotion for the Peacock network? You be the judge.

The gold medal winning American downhill ski champion, one of the darlings of the Vancouver games, appeared with Costas. At the end of the interview, Bob reminded Lindsey that she's the biggest 'Law & Order' fan in the world. Lindsey didn't deny it. She said it was true and the video they showed of her visiting the set and gushing about the show looked very sincere.

NBC News President Finally Bans Video of Luger's Death

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 15th 2010 1:30PM
NBC logoNews is a tricky thing. If you have footage of something, particularly something that is shocking or important or "breaking news," you're almost obligated to show it. If you don't show it, people would start to wonder why you're not showing it, especially if it has something to do with a major event that you as a network are covering. For example, the death of Olympic luger Nodar Kumaritashvili.

But when does "news" turn into exploitation and "too much?" That's what NBC was facing with the footage of Kumaritashvili's death before the Olympics even started. Some (including me) thought that they showed it way too much. Over and over again, often in slow motion and with commentary. They even showed it at the start of the opening night ceremonies and viewers weren't happy about that at all.

'The Simpsons' - 'Boy Meets Curl' Recap

by Jason Hughes, posted Feb 15th 2010 1:00AM
'The Simpsons' - 'Boy Meets Curl'(S21E12) Nothing says "I love you" quite like ... mixed curling? 'The Simpsons' take another look at the sport that's "sweeping" the Winter Olympics by storm. Yeah, sorry about that. I couldn't help myself. Hopefully you can just brush it off.

I respect all athletes, but try as they might I don't think the writers and animators managed to make curling any less weird for me. Surprisingly, the show didn't even really take any potshots at the sport. As far as I can tell, they depicted it fairly accurately, without mocking the inherent goofiness of it, other than to say Marge has been training for it her whole life by sweeping floors at home.

Even still, that may be accurate. The sweeping motion is, after all, a sweeping motion. That is how we clean our floors. I get that this was an Olympics-themed episode to celebrate the Winter Games going on right now, and that it was a Valentine's Day episode airing on the holiday, but the two themes made uncomfortable bed fellows.

What You Missed Last Night: The Last 'Jay Leno Show'

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 10th 2010 11:29AM
If you missed the very last episode of 'The Jay Leno Show' last night, here are the "highlights."

Because Leno is going back to 'The Tonight Show,' this wasn't a big farewell. It was more like "yeah, this is the last episode, see ya later" (Leno returns to late night after the Olympics).

Ashton Kutcher told Jay the whole 'Jay Leno Show'/'Tonight Show' plot was one of his punks, Bob Costas made a joke comparing Jay to the L.A. Clippers, Jay showed some "best" moments from the show, and Donald Trump told Jay "You're Fired" (which continues to be annoying - Leno wasn't fired, he's simply getting another multi-million dollar position in the same company).

Here's the whole episode:

The Jay Leno Show: Vince Vaughn

by Danny Gallagher, posted Sep 24th 2009 4:45AM
Jay Leno and racecar driver Justin Bell at the Green Car ChallengeA talk show can only be as good as its guest. That means The Jay Leno Show can only get better than Pee Wee Herman's tornado of suck.

Wednesday's episode was a big step up from the previous night, thanks in part to Vince Vaughn's entertaining sit-down with the big chinned one. Couple that with some entertaining features like "Jaywalking" and the second "Green Car Challenge," and you've got a much better show this time round the track.

Part of that success has to do with the show's choice of guest stars, but this show stuck to what makes it work by introducing new segments that fit the old show's style and building on old ones.

NBC renews deal with the NFL

by Allison Waldman, posted Aug 21st 2009 9:29AM
NFL_Sunday_Night_Football_NBCIf there's one night of television that NBC has a handle on, it's Sunday. At least during football season. Football Night In America works, and you know the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." That said, NBC has renewed its NFL deal for two more years. The new deal – the extension – secures that NBC will be broadcasting NFL games through 2013, so there will be plenty of games for all those analysts to yap about.

NBC has nearly enough guys to field a team on the pre-game show: Bob Costas, Dan Patrick, Keith Olbermann, Tony Dungy, Tiki Barber, Rodney Harrison ... with Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth calling the games. Will we notice that John Madden is gone? Probably not, especially if the games are good.
