Brothers and Sisters

A Recent History of Time-Jumping on TV

by Maggie Furlong & Jean Bentley, posted Jun 28th 2011 12:45PM
Weeds, True Blood, Time JumpingLast night's 'Weeds' saw our protagonists flash forward three years in the future, with pot-dealing housewife Nancy Botwin moving from prison to a halfway house in New York City. And on Sunday's 'True Blood' premiere, the residents of Bon Temps skipped ahead an entire year -- a major jump for the series, considering the first three seasons took place during the same month.

All that time-jumping got us thinking about other shows that have pulled the "skip forward" move to avoid awkward plot points. You know, like that time 'One Tree Hill' escaped those clunky college years, or when Melinda had a baby on 'Ghost Whisperer' that was suddenly five years old.

After the page jump, join us in a discussion of time jumps and whether or not they actually worked. (And before you comment-yell at us, this list does not include shows that routinely employ time travel, like 'Doctor Who' or 'Quantum Leap.')

ABC Cancels 'Brothers & Sisters,' 'V,' 'Off the Map,' 'No Ordinary Family' & More, Renews 'Happy Endings,' 'Body of Proof'

by Jean Bentley, posted May 13th 2011 4:20PM
V, ABCThat thunderous pop you just head was the sound of ABC dropping pretty much every single one of its bubble shows at once.

The network has reportedly canceled most of its lowest-rated series, including veterans 'Brothers & Sisters' and 'V' as well as newbies 'Off the Map,' 'No Ordinary Family,' 'Detroit 187,' 'Better With You' and 'Mr. Sunshine.'

Though it was speculated recently that 'Brothers & Sisters' could get an abridged season pickup, it turns out that star Rachel Griffiths' jokes about being unemployed are true after all. The fifth season -- now series -- finale aired last Sunday night.

Meanwhile, the second season (and now series) finale of 'V' aired back in March.

Rachel Griffiths Jokes About 'Brothers & Sisters' Cancellation

by Jean Bentley, posted May 2nd 2011 3:45PM
Rachel GriffithsAlthough the fate of 'Brothers & Sisters' is unknown after the show's May 8 season finale, the bubble show's actors aren't necessarily expecting good news for their five-year-old series.

Rachel Griffiths made a surprise appearance at Australia's Logie Awards show last night (the equivalent of the Emmys) where the Aussie actress joked about heading down to the country's welfare office because she'd soon be out of a job.

According to Aussie TV blog TV Tonight, she told the Logies host, "I'm soon to be unemployed so I checked in with Centrelink ... and said, 'Looks like I'm out of a job and wanna sign up.'"

TV Line reached out to ABC for official confirmation of a 'Brothers & Sisters' cancellation, to which a rep replied "No decision has been made."
