Kelly Ripa Shocked at Bryant Gumbel's Lung Cancer Battle on 'Live with Regis and Kelly' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Dec 9th 2009 10:40AM
While filling in for Regis Philbin for a second day in row yesterday as guest co-host on 'Live with Regis and Kelly,' Bryant Gumbel dropped a surprise bombshell and announced a past battle with cancer.

"Two months ago I had cancer surgery. They opened up my chest, they took a malignant tumor, and they took part of my lung, and they took some other goodies," Gumbel said. "The pathology on most of the stuff came back benign, but enough aggressive cells had escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment. I went through that and it's done now. And we hope ... we hope ... it's over and done."

Bryant Gumbel reveals that he had cancer surgery

by Joel Keller, posted Dec 8th 2009 9:45AM
Bryant GumbelTalk about keeping a secret... Subbing for Regis Philbin on Live with Regis and Kelly, Bryant Gumbel just revealed that, like Reege, he's also recovering from recent surgery: he recently underwent cancer surgery in his chest and lungs.

According to Gumbel, he had a tumor removed from his chest, and part of one of his lungs also got removed; in addition, he needed what he called "more treatment" to make sure all the cancerous cells had been eliminated. He didn't mention what that treatment was, though.

The 61-year-old (!) Gumbel has kept a relatively low profile in recent years, popping up on his Real Sports show on HBO and occasional stints as a sub for Regis. So it's easy to see how this could have been on QT.

Bryant Gumbel out as NFL Network announcer

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 12th 2008 8:15AM
bryant gumbelGame over. The NFL Network has made a change in the broadcast booth and Bryant Gumbel will not be back calling games. The veteran broadcaster, one-time host of NBC's Today show and CBS's Early Show and currently the host of HBO's Real Sports, has been doing play by play on the NFL Network's eight-game schedule alongside color commentator Cris Collinsworth for the past two seasons. He's now the ex-play by play man.

The NFL Network didn't say who would be replacing Bryant, and the way it was presented it appears that the decision to separate at this time was a mutual decision. Still, it was Gumbel who tendered his resignation, perhaps avoiding the embarrassment of being dumped.
