Mariah Carey Freaked Out on 'TRL' 10 Years Ago Today

by Jean Bentley, posted Jul 19th 2011 9:00AM
Mariah Carey, TRLBetween Mariah Carey's high-profile marriage to Nick Cannon, her respected indie movie acting career and her still-successful singing career, it's hard to remember the days when Carey was the go-to crazy celebrity punchline.

But yet we all remember that fateful day 10 years ago (yes, an entire decade has passed), on July 19, 2001, when our lady Mariah pushed an ice cream cart onto the 'TRL' stage, took off her shirt and freaked Carson Daly out.

Today we take a moment to appreciate Mariah's pioneering of the ol' hospitalization for "exhaustion" excuse -- a life before bald Britney Spears became the face of public star meltdowns, when Lindsay Lohan was still the cute redhead from 'The Parent Trap.'

Watch the (extremely low-quality, sorry) incident below, thank the butterflies that she's okay now and tell us: where were you when Mariah had her on-camera meltdown?

'The Voice' Finale: Who is the Singing Competition's First Winner? (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 30th 2011 12:13AM
Javier Colon & Dia Frampton, 'The Voice''American Idol' revolutionized the singing competition in America ten years ago, and its first winner, Kelly Clarkson, went on to worldwide success and fame.

This summer, 'The Voice' (Wed., 8PM ET on NBC) has arguably reinvented the concept by putting the focus on ... the voice. Will its winner go on to comparable success?

With top caliber coaches in Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera, the show was more about nurturing tomorrow's superstars than sitting distant and aloof in judgment of them. And after all was said and done it came down to 2 percent.

Cee Lo Green and Carson Daly on Why 'The Voice' Is Less Pretentious Than 'Idol' (VIDEO)

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 26th 2011 3:30PM
Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Carson Daly of NBC's 'The Voice'
Even though I've never been a huge fan of 'American Idol,' I have to admit that the concept of NBC's new singing competition show, 'The Voice,' is intriguing (premieres Tuesday, April 26, 9PM ET).

Four of the hottest names in the music business -- Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, and country star Blake Shelton -- listen to singers without seeing what they look like. If they like what they hear, they turn their chairs around.

Then comes the intriguing part: If more than one of the coaches like a singer, they fight to make their case that the singer should choose him or her as a coach. The goal? To build as strong a team of singers as possible for the competition phase of the show.

I spoke to Cee Lo and 'Voice' host Carson Daly about what separates 'The Voice' from shows like 'Idol' -- the phrase "lack of pretentiousness" was thrown around a bit -- and who is the most competitive of the four mentors. Check out the video interview after the jump.

Carson Daly Brings Us the Magic of New Year's Eve in New York City (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jan 3rd 2011 12:29AM
'NBC's New Year's Eve With Carson Daly'In this country, New Year's Eve has almost become synonymous with Times Square in New York City. The dropping of the ball, the confetti and the throngs of people have become as much a symbol of each new year as that diapered baby. 'NBC's New Year's Eve with Carson Daly' (Fri., 11:30PM on NBC) had all the majesty of that magical moment on full display.

Daly became closely associated with New York during his five-year hosting sting on MTV's 'TRL,' which also broadcast live from Times Square every afternoon. For a generation of music lovers, Times Square and Carson Daly defined the city, so it's nice to see NBC continue that association on one of New York's biggest nights.

Daly's obvious love and affection for the city he called home for so long comes through in his descriptions of the unfolding events. And, as many broadcasters don't seem to underrstand, Daly even knew when to be silent and let the visuals and the moment speak for itself. It created a nice capture of one of our nation's classiest celebrations.

'Last Call with Carson Daly' Renewed for 10th (!) Season

by Chris Harnick, posted Aug 20th 2010 10:30AM
Carson DalyHappy 10th Season, Carson Daly! Wait, it's been 10 seasons of 'Last Call with Carson Daly'?

According to Variety, NBC has indeed picked up the late night talk show for a season 10. "I really feel that 'Last Call' has hit its stride. It took 10 years, but it feels brand new and great,"Daly told Variety.

NBC also announced that Daly will continue to serve as the host of its New Year's Eve programming.

If you get over the initial shock that 'Last Call' is still on, the late night show's renewal should come as no surprise. With the controversy surrounding Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno earlier this year, NBC made it clear months ago they wanted to keep Daly around, even if they didn't end up giving him the 'Late Night' hosting gig.
