Charles Barkley Stresses the Importance of a College Degree for Athletes (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 15th 2011 3:45AM
Charles Barkley, 'Late Show with David Letterman' (VIDEO)Everyone seems to agree that a proper college education is important. And we use the word "proper," because for many NCAA athletes, they don't seem to be doing the coursework toward an actual degree. Charles Barkley is passionate about this issue, and talked with David Letterman on 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:37PM ET on CBS) about it.

"You just can't give him classes to keep him eligible," he said of college athletes. "But you're talking about young kids who all think they're going to go to the pros and a very tiny percent -- less than 1% -- [will]."

Letterman then asked Barkley when he graduated. "I've been thinking about going back and getting my degree," Barkley said.

TNT Apologizes for Tracy Morgan's Lewd Comments About Sarah Palin

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jan 28th 2011 7:45AM
Tracy Morgan and Howard Stern at NY Knicks vs Miami Heat, 01/27/11In a true "Did he just say that?!" moment, '30 Rock' star Tracy Morgan set the Twitterverse on fire Thursday night with lewd on-air comments about Sarah Palin, and broadcaster TNT is not happy about it.

According to USA Today, TNT issued an apology within minutes of being contacted by incredulous reporters. In a statement, Turner spokesman Jeff Pomeroy said, "It's unfortunate Mr. Morgan showed a lack of judgment on our air with his inappropriate comments. We apologize for any embarrassment or offense it may have caused."

The comments came during Morgan's appearance on 'Inside the NBA,' before the New York Knicks vs. Miami Heat game at Madison Square Garden. Kenny Smith asked Morgan to settle an argument he said he and co-host Charles Barkley "have all the time. ... Tina Fey or Sarah Palin?"

Charles Barkley Discusses Getting Felt Up by a TSA AgentBack when he was a basketball player, Charles Barkley was known as "The Round Mound of Rebound." This nickname alludes to the fact that he was great at grabbing rebounds -- and to the fact that he was a little, well, pudgy. And that was when he was a professional athlete. Once Barkley retired from the game, he really started to pack on the pounds.

On the new 'Lopez Tonight' (weeknights, 12AM ET on TBS), Charles discussed gaining weight, losing it, and how going through airport security is a real problem when you're fat. After leaving basketball, Barkley put on 100 pounds, leading to difficulties with a TSA agent. "You know how they ... reach up under there?" he said, gesturing to his chest. "The [agent's] hand disappeared."

A Busboy Defeats the NBA on 'Jimmy Kimmel'Busboy Ricardo Reyes is the 'Pop-a-Shot' master. He has defeated all challengers at the mini-basketball game, and his challengers have included NBA All-Stars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. (You can see his victories here for yourself.)

Jimmy Kimmel and his staff discovered 'Pop-a-Shot' prodigy Reyes in a local bar, and brought him on the show. In addition to beating LeBron and Kobe at the game, Reyes has also beaten Charles Barkley and Carmelo Anthony. And so, what reward does Reyes get for his mini-basketball dominance?

Why, a new car, of course! On 'Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night' (Tue., 8PM ET on ABC), Kimmel awards the unsuspecting Ricardo with a brand new Ford Mustang. And then, Reyes drives off into the sunset, the undefeated champion of 'Pop-a-Shot.' Perhaps one day he will return -- if his title ever needs defending. Until then, Mr. Reyes, we bid you adiós.

Review: Saturday Night Live - Charles Barkley/Alicia Keys

by Annie Wu, posted Jan 10th 2010 12:45PM

Charles Barkley isn't much of an actor. I knew that even as a little kid, when I saw him pop up in Space Jam for all of five minutes. If anyone was expecting to be blown out of the water by Barkley's performance, they really need to reconsider if their entire life is plagued by self-sabotage, as that was clearly a silly thing to hope for and a set-up for inevitable disappointment.

Going in with low expectations made this episode easier to watch. There were a few points here and there where Barkley seemed more comfortable, and some of his pre-taped segments were pretty funny. Overall though, this wasn't a particularly memorable episode, apart from the fact it was bumped by over thirty minutes, thanks to something called the NFL.

And yes, as a young person that isn't very well-versed in sports Space Jam is my go-to reference for Barkley.

Jimmy Kimmel to air primetime specials

by Kristin Sample, posted Jun 4th 2008 3:03PM
Jimmy KimmelThe late night comedian will be appearing during your primetime schedule. Starting tomorrow, Jimmy Kimmel LIve will run special half-hour shows each night that ABC airs the basketball finals. Special guests include: David Beckham, Edward Norton, Charles Barkley, Liv Tyler, Adam Sandler, Eminem, Shaquille O'Neil, Magic Johnson and New Orleans Hornets guard and 2008 MVP contender Chris Paul, among others.

Out of the celebrities mentioned, I'm most interested to see Eminem. I haven't seen the Real Slim Shady on TV in awhile. He's always a good interview though -- all that contrived hostility and testosterone in overdrive. Who are you looking forward to seeing? Or is Kimmel's fabulousness enough to get you to tune in?

The schedule is after the jump.

T-Mobile: "Chuck and Dwayne"

by Jen Creer, posted Feb 3rd 2008 10:17PM
This was a really funny commercial, especially because it was so well-performed by basketball players Dwayne Wade and Charles Barkley. Charles Barkley (Chuck) puts Dwayne into his "Top Five" on T-Mobile, so he can call him anytime. At first, Dwayne is delighted and tells Barkley to go ahead and call him. Flatter soon turns to frustration as Barkley calls to talk game tips, the definition of HD (High Definition), and because he is bored. Wade resorts to ducking "Chuck's" calls and hiding to get away from him.

Maybe you have to see it. It's right under the jump.

T-Mobile: Duane Wade vs Charles Barkley

by Ryan Carter, posted Feb 4th 2007 11:32PM

Duane Wade is the new hotness, and we all know it. Charles Barkley however thinks he is still the junk after so many years. If only he knew he was actually old and busted. I guess waitresses have a way of letting you know. Duane offers to have Barkley in his fave five (from T-Mobile) and Barkley just thinks he's being a young kid who thinks he's all that, when really it is the way other around.

The waitress asks if Barkley is Wade's dad, which doesn't make Charles all that happy. This ad made me laugh. It seems that someone is always getting the better of Barkley in some fashion, even all the way back to an ad I saw when Charles complains "he broke my coffee cup." At least he is still making money doing ads.

The Daily Show: January 31, 2006

TDSThe Daily Show decided to give Alan Greenspan a great send-off so they started up the "Irrationally Exuberant Tribute to Alan Greenspan". Yes, ladies and gentlemen and you two hardcore Greenspan fans, TDS had a full episode dedicated to Greenspan (except for the Charles Barkley interview). Jon expressed his love for Greenspan and his manly features ("I would totally do that guy!") and filled us in on the basics (Age: 79; Sign: Pisces; Porn name: Chad Lexington; Drag queen name: Buttons Manhattan; Jewiness Per Square Inch level of 59). Throughout the rest of the episode, correspondents joined in with their favorite Greenspan stories (Rob Corddry took Greenspan's idea once and dumped a girl he really liked, only to find Greenspan and the same woman having sex later).
